Wanted: Standalone drum machine with MPC pads but not MPC price tag

I've owned a few different Akai things, including my current Akai MPD-218. And it works fine with my iOS setup.

Truth be told -- there are times I don't to hook this up to any software. If I could wave a magic wand, I'd just plug it into my mixer / PA setup, along with my guitar and synth, and just play. I really like having the MPC pads with velocity. And I like having knobs or faders to vary things up a bit while performing. And also while playing back a pattern loop.

So, yes, an obvious answer is an MPC. But I don't want to spend the $$$, or invest the time in more software or something else that wants to be my production base.

Even my old XR-20 that I sold is close to what I want now. But it lacked knobs and faders.

Any thoughts on what I could get?

Thanks,
Joe

  • You’re specifically asking about hardware here right?

  • Yes, thanks!

  • If the Akai MPD-218 had a new version with some basic sound banks and looping, that'd be about right.

  • The new sp 404 ?

There’s not much they can compete with the MPC. Especially at the price you’re wanting. Some things can get you sorta close though. The Volca Sample 2, S0404, the Elektron Model series, etc. But the MPC One would be the best. Or using your Akai to control iMPC.

The akai mpd232 has a sequencer.

This is what I’d suggest if you can get your hands on one at the he store price and not the overinflated prices a lot of chancers are listing it for on eBay.
(It is possible, I didn’t pre-order and managed to cop one here in the U.K.).

A 2nd hand MPC One is a tough price tag to beat, afaik they sell in the 500€ range.
You don‘t have to use all features of the onboard software, just samples, kits and basic sequencing... ignore the rest.

At least that‘s what I do with an MPC Studio I got for 150€ a while ago, running with a Mac Mini (10 years old, let‘s assume 150€), an interface (at least 100€), monitor, mouse, keyboard, cables (another 150€).
It does the job quite well, but the setup is way more bulky and less convenient than an „all in one box“. I already had the Mac, interface, etc, but one has to consider these items when estimating the overall system price.
