New guitar need advice

Bought myself a sweet guitar today.

I need some advice on what apps to get.

What rigs for Overloud should I get. Which ones are the best?

Which Nembrini amps to buy?
Are the Overloud rigs better?

Thanks for any advice you can give.

  • What kind of sound are you looking for?

  • I want to buy a guitar support like this one. Do you have a link or a name? Thank you!

For the effects, buy the basic: AUM + a good reverb like Alteza + Beef (a kind of compressor) + Delay. All FAC effects are top notch. Nembrini are really good for amp sim.

This. There's no way to make recommendations without some idea of the styles you like to play. Even then, it's extremely subjective and you're going to get recommendations all over the map. The more specific about what you do like you can be, the better advice you'll get.

I'll say for myself that I prefer Nembrini to Overloud any day. I seem to be in the minority there.

I bought that stand years ago, I used to have my old Guitar on it. I’m sorry but I can’t remember where I got it from.

Well I would like a good clean tone and some overdriven tones for classic rock. I also like metal so a bit of everything really🤣

I already have AUM, all free effects from Nembrini, their newest amp (which I don’t particularly like)
Rhino amp (which is awesome), Mixbox and the free stuff from overloud.

But I’m still not satisfied, I can’t find what I’m looking for. I keep reading that the Overloud rigs are the best so I suppose I’m mainly looking for advice on those really and what people say are the best amps from Nembrini.

Based on what you just said, I suggest the Nembrini Cali Reverb or BG Ecstasy. If you're more into British style sounds, Nembrini AC-30 is an excellent choice.

(My personal favorite is the Nembrini SoundMaster, but not so much in response to what you posted.)

Best of luck with Overloud, there are 1,000,000 choices and 999,999,999,999 opinions about them (virtually all good for sure though). ;)

You can start with this thread about TH-U ... See ya in a few weeks when you're done reading. B)

Last bit of advice ... don't Judge any of these based on the presets. They all usually require some dialing in for your needs and preferences.

  • If you don't have a particular amp in mind, the Mid Gain Monsters rig from TH-U gets you a pretty wide array of amps or you could go with the TH-U Metal expansion, while not a "rig" gets you multiple amps to try. I'd agree with Wim about the Nembrini BG Extasy and though I don't have the Cali Reverb I've heard nothing but praise for it.

  • TH-U app is free. You get a bunch of free sims and pedals and an IR loader free of charge. If you create an account (email, password) and log-in, you get more free stuff as well as 10 free rig profiles. All of that should give you a basic idea of what the app can do. You may find that you hate the user interface and don’t care for the sound, or you may be intrigued to buy into the Rigs and find tonal nirvana. In any case, start with the free rigs and get a feel for the app. I just saved you a lot of money.

  • @WigWamBam Congratulations! I love Telecasters and play a very old one most of the time. Everything that @wim said about Nembrini is true for me, too. TH-U is amazing but I favor those same Nembrini amps, especially the SoundMaster. When you start messing with them, lower the input gain as all of the presets are too hot.

I have logged in but I can’t find free rigs. It’s quite a difficult interface to use isn’t it.

@WigWamBam PS congrats on the guitar! I know that one well and it’s awesome. I believe those are wide range humbuckers, so will sound better with some apps/settings than with others.

I had conquered my guitar addiction for about 4 months, even sold off a few partscasters… then I got three freaking guitars just this week!

2018 Fender offset Mahogany tele made in Japan, only 250 made. Talked my dad into snagging it local in San Fran. Going up in value by the day.

1991 Peavey Predator (my third) made in USA. Got it yesterday on reverb.con

And lastly 2012 Mexican Tele off of my local Facebook Marketplace for only $220! That was today.

I already had too many guitars (and basses) before this spree.
I sincerely hope you don’t spend on apps how I’m spending on guitars… I stopped buying th-u rigs a long time ago, after about 40 or so…

There’s a learning curve, but I actually love it. I dislike the other UIs like Bias much more, but that’s just me.

To find the rigs you need to + The Rig Player into your chain. Add it to an empty screen. The Rig Player is probably the first amp in the “amp” menu.

@JoyceRoadStudios a nice set of guitars. You must be crazy buying all of those in one week. A Mexican tele for $220 that’s a steal, no way would you find one for that sort of price in the UK.

Your right they are wide range humbuckers what would be the best way to set up an amp to use them?

I tried a ton of guitars in the store today and that was the one that I liked the feel and sound of over any of the others.

You can’t find that price in the US either, I couldn’t believe it. He listed it for $250 which already seemed $150 too low. I offered 220 and he accepted. It helped that we live in the same town. All original too, no mods. It’s my first proper tele actually, the Japanese one is an offset tele.

Regarding the wide range humbuckers, I’m assuming the guitar is a recent reissue rather than from the 1970s, so those “humbuckers” are current as well. Basically, they sound like fat single coils but probably don’t have the hum of single coils. They run hotter than normal single coils so that’s good for rock and metal in your case. They run the risk of being muddy, and they already have lots of mids, you may want to dial up the treble and the bass on the amp sim. I’d say when you’re looking at presets in all the apps, the “strat” or “single coil” presets will sound better than the “les Paul” or “humbucker” presets, surprisingly.

  • @JoyceRoadStudios my first electric guitar looked just like that peavey, but it was an epiphone. Super trebley but I loved it.

  • edited February 2022

I had the same question, what amp sims or rig captures are top notch in 2021/22. I was an early adapter with the first Bias, Jamup Pro, Tonestack (with an Apogee Jam interface), and in the end I thought it all sounds too vanilla, flat, not organic enough.

With THU and a few rigs I am very happy at the moment, and I got Rhino just for fun and high gain.

The beauty of the THU rigs is that you cannot adjust or tweak too much parameters, just leave it alone as it is, so you don't go into a rabbit hole with IR's and endless knob or component tweaking.

And this one is a must have

  • +1 BG Extasy - haven't used anything else since it came out, covers all bases.
(Congrats on the tele - looks nice!)

Dude those predators have the best neck I’ve ever played. I don’t know what it is, on the surface it seems a little slim and a little flat, maybe it’s the wide shoulders, but I love this neck so much I have three of these now from 1991-1992. And they go for like $200. Gotta get the script logo “predator”.

I think you already got better advice than I can give you, but I was going to suggest listening to the demos that Nembrini put out on SoundCloud to hear what they can sound like:

You can find these by scrolling down the page for each of their amps: https://www.nembriniaudio.com/products/bg-extasy-boutique-guitar-amplifier

I agree, many of the presets in th-u are designed to sound good right out of the gate. I barely tweak them if ever. I mostly scroll through presets and find what I like. With Nembrini, most of the presets are junk, with really extreme knob positions, and must be tweaked. But that doesn’t mean Nembrini sounds worse. It can sound better than most.

  • Also consider Gain Stage Vintage Clean.
Extremely versatile (and definitely not just for clean tones) and incredible value.

I only use Nembrini/Overloud/ToneStack Pro if I can’t get the sound I want from this.

Hmm £4.99 too I’ll deffo give that a go. Thanks

GSVC is fantastic, from clean up to crunch.

Also consider db Audioware 20th anniversary, formerly known as Flying Haggis. For Fender/Vox cleans to crunch with really nice built in IRs and atmosphere.

  • Congratulations, @WigWamBam!

One thing that might help choose an amp: Can you name four albums/bands/songs that you wish you had played on? Telecasters are super-versatile: Used by Keith Richards Prince, Joe Strummer, Tom Morello (the RATM songs in Drop-D, anyway).

How about Guns n roses, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC and Van Halen.

  • All right then!
If Flo were still here, he might suggest the Nembrini Marshall sim.

  • The Marshall sim is pretty nice, I always pop that on with some fuzz when I want to get on some shredding blues or heavy psychedelic stuff. I actually like the Nembrini bass amp too on a lot of guitar stuff, it’s awesome for a grungy sound when you pair up some pedals with it

For those sounds, if you decide to get a th-u rig or two, I’d recommend the Choptones Brit 1987x rig.

  • @JoyceRoadStudios i managed to load the free rigs. They sound very good. Im definitely going to buy a rig pack or two. In your opinion which pack has the most versatility?

I assume you already have some pedals

As always buy an analog amp and a simple analog rig

Distortion +comp+delay so you can first soak into the richness of raw guitar and amp combo

I would get into the digital realm only after you find what is the “sound” that chooses you

Also that digital app/software sound nothing like analog , some of them noise pollution (eg some amplitude apps)but when you want to record some stuff quickly , that’s when you will want to take a stab at digital stuff and if you have reference point via analog , it easy to kinda modify any modeler with gain staging

For recording the sound in you head , totally a different ballgame , I usually ask someone for best results
