  • I would say first, decent audio interface and decent monitors. (+ all the cables and dongles needed to get them working correctly w/ the ipad) Or headphones if you prefer that.

Apps? Really depends on your level of technical competency and preference. You’re going to need a ‘host’ or DAW for running apps (AUv3). Do you like ‘step-sequencing’ or are you more of a ‘live-player’? Maybe more of a pad based ‘MPC’ workflow? Personally, I like Drambo & AUM as my main workspace, then either Cubasis or Auria Pro for recording and arranging.

Luckily in iOS now there’s lots of quality choices as far as synths, drums, effects, etc. Experimenting with different stuff is easy on the bank account in iOS because apps are pretty cheap overall.

I would recommend a decent pair of headphones to start, forgoing monitors till you’re sure you're into it. You’d spend almost half your budget on a decent speaker setup. Sony 7506 headphones for under a hundred. For a midi controller… if you don’t need 88 keys, the Arturia MKll Keylab 49 has great build, connectivity and bundled software (not useful for your iOS adventure) at $449 from SweetWater. Of course you could spend less than 1/2 that for something decent from Akai, or the Arturia Essentials line.

My DAW of choice is Cubasis3. If you like old school gui this is it. As far as apps and and drums. It depends upon your genre. MixBox by IK offers something free to start and has a noteworthy collection of effects. For synths… SynthMaster2 is humongous (over 5000 presets complete) and PureSynthPlatinum. For an excellent piano Ravenscroft275 or PurePiano. Solo acoustic horns and strings… the SWAM collection which you can build into ensembles. BASSalicious 1 is free, I believe. The paid version is terrific. BeatHawk also highly recommended for all in one with great acoustic inapps.
ModulePro or ISymphonic for orchestral stuff.

I use Lumbeat drum apps and recommend them highly, but depending on your genres there are better apps for programming, I think.

You need to supply some more info. If you’re into sampling, for example. Layr seems to be the standard for that, tho Cubasis3 has a sampler, too, but basic.

  • Some more info about the style of music you're after will help a lot with app recommendations. Also whether it will primarily be recorded from audio inputs, midi inputs, on-screen ... or which combinations primarily.

One thing for sure, your dollars will go a lot farther with a controller and apps (and an audio interface if you need) than with hardware.

  • Decent headphones are a must, my next order are the KZ ZEX Pro, when you have 3.5mm jack you are fine. Then a Keyboard, for me was the Arturia Keystep 37 the winner. Not too big and had Aftertouch.

For Apps you should search the forum. There is a lot outside. Def you need Loopy Pro, in the near future you can do all what you need with it and at the moment LK with IAP unlock Matrix for MIDI.
KQ Dixie, Synthmaster, GeoShred and TAL-UNO are my favs Synths, Elecrtic for ePiano stuff.
FAC Drumkit, Hammerhead, Fractal Bits and Drumcomputer my favs Drums.
Rest of the FAC Stuff, DDMF, Toneboosters and RRS/OOO for effects, RX950 is def a must.

For headphones you can dive in a rabbit hole, like with all the stuff here. When you not record with mic, open HP one are nice, maybe you check out the AKG 701, there are real nice in the stereo field but the bass is real quiet or the Beyerdynamc DT-770 for a closed room and big bass. When you have a house where you can turn up the volume buy speakers, interface and treat your room.

To give tips too you, you should give us more infos, like other said before.
