Gadget, AUM, and Loopy Pro: how to record perfect loops?

What I'd like to do: record Gadget into Loopy Pro. I can't host Gadget in Loopy Pro (yet) because IAA apps crash Loopy Pro on my old iPad Air 1. (I'm planning to get an Air 5 as soon as it comes out.) However, Loopy Pro works great in AUM. So, I should be able to host Gadget in AUM and record loops with Loopy Pro in an effect slot...

Here's the hang-up: I can't figure out how to sync Gadget's clock and transport with AUM. Ableton Link works, but it just sets the clock going -- it doesn't start Gadget's play head.

I have no doubt that I can get Gadget playing and capture the audio in AUM. But then I have to go back and trim the loop. I have apps that will do this (Neon among them), but that kind of breaks the flow. Ditto for exporting tracks from Gadget.

Is there a way to do this: pipe Gadget into AUM and record perfect loops in one go?

If you have both the Gadget and AUM transports already playing (and your Gadget track armed) you can easily record loops by pressing the record button in AUM: you'll notice that it flashes yellow until the next bar starts, and only then will it begin recording. Then if you press the record button a second time it will only stop recording at the end of the bar. Just don't touch the play button, that needs to be running the whole time.

So if you do it that way the recording starts and stops in sync with the track, and you can record perfect loops.

  • Thank you, richardyot.

I kept Googling and found another solution on reddit (which, I confess, I usually ignore): "In the Gadget settings, set to external sync, then in the AUM settings, enable Send MIDI Clock." I tried it, and it worked right away. I could immediately record loops of whatever length I wanted with Loopy Pro in the effect slot.

  • You seem to have problems with IAA apps for some reason. On my iPad Pro IAA apps are not a problem, neither in Loopy nor in AUM. Basically I did the same what you try to achieve. When I host Gadget in Loopy it just works if I start Gadget first and then open the Loopy project or load Gadget into Loopy. With AUM it‘s the same: first load the IAA apps then load them into AUM. I also loaded AUM into Loopy as IAA which gives you 8 channels from AUM into Loopy. They are also perfectly synced then. Same with AUM and Gadget. When Gadget is loaded into AUM they are synced.

  • Another important thing @dokwok2 : Do not remove the hardware audio input from Loopy Pro. Just mute it. Removing the hardware input plays havoc with IAA loading. I've had no issues with Gadget or other IAA apps since I discovered that.

Thanks for that advice, wim. LP still crashes when I try to host an IAA, even with hardware audio muted, but I blame my old Air 1 for that.

Have you reported it to @Michael and sent him a log? If not, please do.
