OT: Apple iPad (A13 chip) or iPad Air A14 chip Performance wise about the same?

Or ie, is the A14 significantly better than the A13?

  • Yeah thanks Gus, already done the online spec checks, more after "real-world" usage from folks...Specs do not tell the story TBH!

I find they match up with my experience well enough.

The iPad Air 4 (A14) has 4 GB RAM, while the iPad 9 (A13) has only 3 GB RAM. That could be useful if you're loading a lot of stuff at once. And it would ensure rapid task switching, if that's important. The other performance specs seem pretty similar, though I'm sure the A14 has more bells/whistles/etc. The Air advances you to USB-C, vs Lightning on the iPad 9, so that might be a consideration.

  • Thanks Dave,
Yes I am tossing up between an iPad Air, iPad or the MAC Mini (and buying a cheaper used iPad as a HID to go with it.) They are all about the same price, give or take.

@Gus I find that it is actually not similar...graphics and touch responses can be slightly different, audio throughput can be slightly different even though essentially the same chip...little things like that that one only finds through experience not just reading specs!

For sure. Comparing specific devices and use cases is certainly different than just comparing CPUs.

So it sounds like you are asking about overall performance impressions of 9th Gen iPad Base Model vs. 4th Gen iPad Air not just the ‘chip performance’.

  • The normal iPad models now in days do not have a laminated display. I find them way less usable due to this.

  • I have the same doubt as you.
I will go for the iPad 9th because price, then .... have a Headphone Jack which is always nice to have :)

No doubt it's nicer to have a laminated display. But I don't find that it affects "usability" at all; it's more of a luxury feature. Compare them side-by-side and you'll notice laminated is nicer. But if all they ever use is a non-laminated display most people will think it's great.

Yes indeed, thanks - I was only posting the chip nomenclature to differentiate between the two....been reading more, and in particular you can now load up apps that will allow an iPad to be used as the HID with a MAC Mini - the specs of which (with the M1) seem to far outstrip the iPads. A lot of the usage reports I am reading on the MINI are probably 90% positive, with some of the gripes being , well, of not too important a nature. Would need to get and learn Mainstage, but hopefully that won't be too onerous!
At least the plugins I 'd be using all have MAC versions :) Assuming I go for a mini instead

  • hahaha, went for the MAC Mini M1 instead. Thanks for everyone's thoughts, much appreciated.

I picked up an iPad 9th gen at the start of the year and I’m loving it. It’s great to have the built-in headphone port + lightning port. No complaints about speed or performance either.

haha, sure, if I have it set up in time. Got a lot of transferring and installing to do...but I will post back. Apple say it's in the process of getting ready for shipping...took some time coz I modded it a tiny bit.
