Can you force iOS apps (namely Audioshare) to screen rotate on iPhone?

edited March 2022 in Other

I love using Audioshare as a portable field recorder, but if I point the mic end of the iPhone at anything to record then the app is upside down. I know some apps support rotation, but are there any accessibility settings people know of that maybe do it for all apps?

  • For me AudioShare 'rotates' so when I point the bottom mic at a destination so I can still use my thumb to start the recording.
TwistedWave and Hokusai 2 also rotate properly...

I tend to prefer Twistedwave where I can on the fly select which of the mics to use and also add markers while recording.
Being able to select which mic to use is very handy when using a headset with a built-in mic for monitoring.

Make sure Rotation Lock is turned off in Control Panel.

Which model iPhone and iOS version do you have? These might make a difference.

  • I'm using an iPhone 13 Pro. Just tried it again after confirming rotation lock is off and still not working.

Apple has completely disabled the "upside-down portrait" orientation on all iPhones with FaceID, and it is one of the most annoying things ever. Just because the unlock mechanism won't work that way, they can't seem to imagine that someone might want to orient their device after they unlock it.

I can't tell from your original post which orientation you are trying to use, though. The apps have to individually support specific orientation changes no matter what, though. AudioShare appears to be portrait-only (and as mentioned above, Apple no longer allows upside-down portrait on most devices).

I can't tell from your original post which orientation you are trying to use, though. AUM does a thing where it is aware of orientation, but from a design perspective stays in portrait for most of the UI. You'd have to ask @j_liljedahl about the details, there...

Good catch! With Apple, it's always our way or no way. I guess they figured that if the lock screen appeared correct in that orientation, you'd expect to unlock it that way. Annoying.

  • Yeah, I was trying to change the orientation to upside down portrait mode. Bummer that's not possible, looks like I'm getting a new portable recorder after all.
