Adding laptop to my setup - puzzle - Will this work?

Trying to solve this puzzle.

So I have a working setup using my IPad and Yamaha USB audio mixer. I want to add a laptop to to use an Arturia synth app on the PC. Thinking of adding a Presonus to use analog audio out to the mixer and use the USB for MIDI.

Of course the Ipad can only use one interface which is why I'm using analog audio out of the Presonus. The question is, will the Ipad see MIDI OUT to the synth app on the PC so that I can use my keyboard to play the synth.

Actually now I'm wondering about MIDI IN.. I can't think of how I would even use that.

Many thanks!

  • Tricky but should be doable...

Does your Midi-Keyboard have a both a USB-Port and Midi Ports?

If so, connect the Midi-keyboard via USB to the USB Hub, this way the iPad can see the in/out ports.
...then connect the Keyboards 5-pin Midi Out to the Midi In on Presonus which is connected to the laptop via it's own USB cable.

As for the iPad seeing the midi-output from the laptop, get a USB>Midi dongle, connect it to to the hub and Midi Out from the Presonus to the Midi In on the dongle. (This way the laptop can also be used to sequence apps on the iPad).

In theory this should work and you should also be able to sequence the apps on the laptop from the iPad if the Midi-Keyboard supports Midi-Routing (ie. USB Midi-In to 5Pin Midi-Out).

    Cheers!

What you should do is treat the DAW as the hub of everything. So the MIDI out from your keyboard goes to the iPad midi interface, not the laptop.

Then you connect a MIDI out from the iPad midi interface to the midi in of the laptop interface.

You would then route the midi to the laptop via the DAW using external midi tracks.

When the external midi track is enabled in your daw you’ll hear audio from the laptop. It will also play an midi recorded on that (those) track(s). The midi keyboard will only play to whatever tracks you have enabled in the iPad daw.

That way you can also sequence the laptop easily from the daw and record the midi keyboard into the same daw. The laptop is effectively just an external synth.

It would also be easy to switch things around to have the laptop as the hub.

You will need an audio+Midi interface on both the iPad and laptop. Connecting things like this with midi and audio is relatively trivial. A bit of trial and error might be required to get it working smoothly.

  • I just realized that I asked this same question about a year ago, which tells you how far I have come on this. I'm going to pull trigger on Presonus and experiment.

@Samu MIDI cables are good idea.

@klownshed Thanks. Yeah my IPAD is the center of my setup. I was hoping that the USB from the Presonus would carry MIDI (you know because of MIDI over USB) but it looks like that is not the case since I guess that's a USB audio interface. It may be possible to go MIDI DIN to USB cable. I guess there are a few different ways to go. And yeah, I do just want to add the laptop as an external synth. Hoping to avoid the temptation of using the laptop as the center of everything.

    Thanks all.

  • All USB Audiointerfaces that have midi ports carry midi over USB.
The problem is that on iOS you’re only able to use the audio from device you last plugged in, midi will always work.
