Song Of The Month Club - March 2022

What is the Song of the Month Club?

It's a place where musicians come to give and receive feedback on their work. Anyone is welcome, whatever their level of ability.

The spirit of the club is to contribute: if you submit a song for others to comment on, you should also have the courtesy to listen to everyone else's contributions and give as much feedback as possible. Posting a track and not listening and commenting on others is not cool.

The purpose of feedback is to be honest. Essentially you should give your truthful impressions of the song, whether good or bad. Negative feedback, if done in the right spirit and with courtesy, can be the most useful and can help the artist to grow and improve and correct their mistakes.

All submissions are welcome, don't hesitate if you want to contribute. We like all kinds of music and we are particularly fond of vocals (but of course we still love a great instrumental). If you are thinking of experimenting with vocals this is a good place to get started.

We ask that you only post one song per month in this thread - if you're lucky enough to be able to produce more, then please just submit your strongest material

And finally, iOS is not a requirement for posting here. If you've recorded your song using nothing but a ukulele and a Fostex 4 track, that's fine

  • My entry for the month, lyrics in the spoiler:

    It’s so dark
    Your hands are cold
You feel that you’re not in control
    You’ve lost your spark
    You’re tired and old
The feral nights will take their toll

    Let go can’t you see
    When you look inwardly
    There’s a hall of mirrors
    In your mind

So you try and you try
    But you can’t believe
You just see what you want to see
    And your illusions
    Make you blind

    You need a friend
    To help you see
    That excess is your enemy
    You reach the end
    The apogee
    Of your joyless revelry

    Let go can’t you see
    When you look inwardly
    There’s a hall of mirrors
    In your mind

So you try and you try
    But you can’t believe
You just see what you want to see
    And your illusions
    Make you blind

    Feeling nothing
    Numb and blind
    Is there something
    Left to find?

But you are blinded by the lies
    The mirrors in your mind

  • so during last month I had a hard time finnishing anything, this weekend I came up with something

    song called Unnessesary
    Bandcamp

    Spotify

  • This is a music track that I improvised on an iPad. I used TC-Data as a MIDI front-end for Animoog Z, Korg Module Pro, and SynthMaster 2. I used MIDI Tape Recorder (within AUM) to capture the performance and AUM to record the audio.

After bringing the AUM audio recording over to my PC, I applied the Lurssen Mastering Console plug-in to the audio mix within Vegas Pro.

The title of the track is Dispersal.

and what a strong entry, the beginning/intro reminds me alot of U2 actually, great soundscape, the vocal melody is a bit more indiepop oriented maybe, great long track, never feeling boring, guitar in the background gives a really nice feeling, whats your process behind a track like this? do you start with a melody, a chord progression? strong songwriting anyway

    I like it,
improvising and never know what will come out of it, the thing I find most fun when producing myself,
to me the track was melancholic, a bit rainy day feeling, nice

Thanks! I almost always start with a chord progression, and build from there. In this case there are 3 separate sections, so 3 chord progressions (verse, chorus, and outro). For the verse and Chorus there is a partial capo on the second fret and I also use non-standard chord shapes to let the high E string drone throughout. There is backwards reverb on the guitar in the verse and chorus to mangle the sound.

I then put the pieces together in the DAW like building lego, and try different arrangements until I find one that works. After that I will record additional guitars and/or synths, flesh out the intro etc...

For the vocal melody I usually record a lot of different ideas over the course of a few days on my phone and select the best ones, for this track I recorded around 40 different melody ideas and used the best 5 or 6.

Once the melody is set I then write the lyrics to go with the melody. This stage is often the hardest :)

After that it's just production, mixing and so on. I might add a few bits if the song still needs something.

The piano melody is really good, and I love the way it builds and evolves over the duration of the track. The background textures are also very interesting and give the track an intriguing and mysterious vibe.

The way the piano part is arranged is very well done, with a recurring theme that is very catchy but also sections that sound more improvised. It could be the soundtrack to a very atmospheric movie.

  • @richardyot - great track, agree there's definitely a U2 vibe in there
@DavidEnglish - interesting improv, love the strings in there, are they from module?
    @martinsa82 - nice groove!

I don't normally do quite so much on the piano, but as my synth brain is seemingly taking time off at the moment I decided that as I'd not written a waltz in over 30 years, there wasn't a better time like the present. I used Pure Piano as the sound source and my Kawai digital piano as keybed. As a side note, I've also just done a video pushing Pure Piano through a few classical pieces to see how it sounds - if you're interested it's the most recent video on my YT channel.

Beautiful waltz, and very assured performance, great job 👍

Nice playing, so good to see someone play something all the way through. I worry all this digital editing is making players get lazy.
    Any way nice job

Yes, Module Pro was running the KApro Cello preset.

Thanks! I worked it out and played it but it's always a bit of a stress with the camera recording.

Your guitar track was really melodic too. Well done.

great guitarplaying, I like the difference when the drums comes in for a time and makes it feel like a more regular song and then back to the only guitar parts, its interesting and imaginative

nice atmosphere going on here, lots of interesting sounds well put together!

@richardyot : a poppy cross between the Cure (disintegration/wish) and my bloody valentine (if I remember correctly one of your other songs also reminded me of them). I especially like the intro/build-up (till around 1:30). After the song looses a bit of the excitement/(soft)power that’s in there for me (or that the build-up promised?). Maybe it’s somehow the contrast between the build-up/vocal start that can be greater? (Like only vocal/drum/bass for a start but louder/a bit saturated?) I think this one is the one I like most from your songs I listened to.

  • @martinsa82: I immediately liked your track, I think for the bright/clear/flowing/simple/evolving/returning piano. It has a background/jazzy/filmic/easy vibe to me. Sometimes a little nervousness seems to creep in.

  • @DavidEnglish: a more classical (must be the cello) easy/somehow autumnal to me/relaxing/somewhat melancholy vibe. I like how you can just listen to it without anything rushing, just the track going/slowly evolving.

  • Hi @swfarrington , a really nice piece of music and some great playing - thanks for sharing!

  • @swfarrington: beautiful classical composition and execution! fresh and warm, hopeful and a bit sad, always coming back

  • @Jmd8928: great guitarplaying! I’m having a thing with intros today as I like your intro (first 12 secs) but also the outro (last 30 secs) the most.

  • @Kitusai : eastern/Indian sounding collage/atmosphere nestling easily in the ear…

The Cello (is it the Kapro in Module?) is beautiful. Very nice melody with a recurring theme, that never gets boring and is very lyrical and evocative. The background pads complement it well.

Very good playing with a very high level of technique :)

The piece is quite jazzy, very freeform in structure with some pretty surprising changes.

BTW if that's your guitar in the Soundcloud picture, it looks very similar to mine (except mine doesn't have a pickguard):

Really good, I love the sounds and textures, and the eastern-sounding scale. Love the guitar playing, very economical but beautiful and melodic.

  • Slowly listening my way through all March entries and gathering courage for an entry with vocals :) Nice sounds, @Kitusai ! I'm wondering which instruments you used here?
