LFO Control of Parameters in Various Plugins
Hi,
It’s me again…. yeah.
Is there a plugin that lets you use a mouse with a GUI to create an LFO, and then let’s you assign it to a MIDI channel and CC# ??
The use case is - to rapidly change the value of a parameter in another plugin via MIDI CC messages to “humanize” the sound effect (plugin).
I can make something like this in Mozaic, but why spend the time if a plugin exists out there. In addition, some of the GUI functions that might be used, say to select the MIDI channel are not available in Mozaic (like a drop down box or whatever).
Thanks!!

You can use a Bluetooth mouse with an iPad, and therefore anything on the screen. Are you saying like draw in the automation with a mouse, then assign it somewhere?
Drambo does it.

Thanks for replying.
No, not “drawing” the LFO out, but using a GUI to set:
the LFO parameters (rate, depth, etc.)
the MIDI parameters (MIDI channel, the CC#, and I think that’s it)
how frequently to use the LFO to send out a MIDI CC message
@rs2000 WOW…. I have Drambo - it seems like overkill; that is Use a complete synth package to create and LFO to send out MIDI change messages. Thanks for bringing it up as a solution.
I must admit I’m not sure I completely follow you.
But I think an app like Stepbud might work.
@rs2000 what module or preset is that? Is it 1 or 2 separate patches?
Just a few modules lined up. You can copy them from my screenshot.
To send MIDI to an external device, you might wanna add the "MIDI Out" module.
@Vmusic No, it's not overkill at all, Drambo is very efficient and will only use very low CPU with this set of modules.
If you prefer one panel with sliders instead of knobs, put the modules into a MIDI rack and add sliders that modulate the parameters you want 😊
The video link below is an example on a guitar multi-fx processor. Go to 3:31 to see the use of an LFO, at 3:51 in the video you see the User Interface in the Axe Fx where you set up the LFO. It’s a simple GUI, where you select the wave type (Sine, Saw Tooth, etc.) you select the rate (up to 1.000 Hz) and the depth. SooOoooo now you’re creating an UP and DOWN wave - like an oscillator, but it’s not moving too fast (it’s low frequency) In the video example; the LFO creates the oscillator and then it controls the Wah Wah Fx, moving it up and down automatically, based on the oscillator (LFO).
Sooooooo……. think of it like this: I literally have my hand on the knob of some parameter in a plugin, and I sit there and turn the knob to the left, and then to the right; to the left and then to the right. I keep doing this. Well…. now I can use the LFO to create this wave, and have it “turn the knob”. The faster the frequency in the LFO, that faster the knob turns…. of course the intermediary here is that the LFO creates the wave and then it has to be translated into MIDI CC messages to move the knob or parameter on some fx plugin.
Stepbud looks a sequencer where you set EACH STEP. It looks like there’s a limit to the number of steps. With an LFO, you set the rate and depth and it creates a wave and to some extent has ‘unlimited’ steps, or nearly unlimited steps. A sine wave is a curve or curved line, rather than 16 points or steps.
@rs2000 - is there a way you can save that Drambo patch and send it to me?
@rs2000
I have somewhat mimicked your setup….. but I don’t know how to start the LFO? how do you ‘set it into motion’ or make it start oscillating?
@Vmusic The LFO is 'free running' but you also need a CC Generator to create CC messages from it.
Here's the zipped project for you.
If I’ve understood you right you just need a basic LFO plug in.
Rozeta suite has an lfo module that can do what you want I think. Each instance has up to 3 LFOs but you can have as many instances as you like.
apeMatrix has built in LfOs and is an alternative to AUM.
@rs2000
THANK YOU!!!
This is exactly what I wanted..... the LFO creates values that go up and down (like a sine wave).... and then these get turned into MIDI CC messages. These are used to 'humanize' some parameter; as if a person was there turning the knob up and down.
I do have a Drambo question, I'll post it separate on the forum.
I do GREATLY APPRECIATE your help.
You have options:
1. Drambo - somebody showed you how to do it above. Relatively simple, Drambo's quite lightweight.
2. Helium - this sequencer has CC modulation lanes which are very flexible, and you can loop parts of the timeline. Not quite what you're after, but maybe you could make it work. You can also record from an external controller, which I do quite a bit.
3. LK - same deal as Helium. More flexible about looping, but your loops will tied to the bar.
3. Stepbud/any step sequencer that allows you to send CCs (there are quite a few - for example a drum sequencer probably does). This is fine, so long as you don't mind that your CCs will be tied to a particular grid.
I think you can also do this with a new app that is in beta at the moment, but I have not used that so can't comment.
Oh - I think we all assumed you meant drawing in an automation envelope and looping that... LOL
This is what the Rosetta Suite's LFO Module looks like in AUM:

There's also an app called mLFO that allows you to configure 16 LFOs with control of channel and FX output per LFO (no "sample and hold" shape which is great for randomization however) One instance will likely meet your needs.
I often need 2-4 Rozeta LFO's to target different apps or hit more parameters than just 3. So, mLFO can be helpful to use screen real estate better.
@cian
Yes.... Thank You!!
If you own Ape Matrix, it comes with a free AUv3 plugin that you can use in any host. It gives you multiple LFO's that you can point to anything you want.
Another favorite is midiLFOs. The really cool thing about that one is you can modulate LFO's from each other. For instance to turn a simple sine wave into something much more complex by combining it with another LFO before sending the values out.
For automation, I recommend apeMatrix
If you need more manual control, check out Pen2Bow
Really? Which one is the LFO?
I see the Send and Sampler, etc. but can’t find the LFO freebie.
It's called Send MIDI.
One nice feature I only recently learned about is you can name the LFO's by tapping the part where
#0
,#1
, etc. shows. Very handy.Oh! and each pair has an XY pad available.
Thank you!
That name makes it seem like a Midi version of the free audio send/receive AU.
I thought it was just a Midi routing thing.
I guess I never loaded it to check it out.
That’s pretty funny that I have had this for years and never knew. 😆
