MIDI Fighter 3D and OffGrid 4x4 controller opinions

edited March 2022 in Other

I’m looking for a small 4x4 MIDI grid controller to bash out notes and drums in Ableton, and for Koala duties.

It looks like MIDI Fighter 3D and OffGrid are good options.

Any opinions on these? Are those OffGrid buttons responsive? It’s hard to tell from the videos whether they’re snappy or mushy.

  • If you’re looking for velocity sensitivity then 3D doesnt’t have it. I’m also interested in OffGrid so hoepfully someone can chime in.

  • Velocity would be nice. But it really depends on button feel. I’ve used MIDI pads before that have velocity, but you have to hammer them to get anything.

  • The quest for groove has en extensive review of pad controller.
Personnally, i am into finger drumming A LOT and so far the best one this oldie korg padkontrol. It is not compact, but can remap the pad directly on the pads plus has midi din out and can be bus powered. And I got it for 50€ second hand.

  • Maschine mikro mk3 is cool, as is maschine mk3, but I find the dynamic range rather limited compared to the padkontrol, at least on the units i used to have. Didn’t try anything from akai. The most sensitive one is the launchpad pro mk3, but pad are too small for me.

  • I already have a Push, so I’m not interested in anything bigger than 4x4. I want something that is small enough to pair with an iPad or laptop.

  • The padkontrol is 4x4 :-)

  • I have a OffGrid (using mainly with koala and bm3) and I love it ! The size is perfect to join my iPad in my backpack ! Pads feeling is really nice. Only depends the size of the pads if you like small pads or not. I have a combo iPad with OffGrid and midi fighter twister (to control koala fx) and it’s my killer setup

Velocity on OffGrid is also very well

Feel free to ask if you have any questions

  • Thanks @Lawkyz. Are the OffGrid pads responsive to a light touch? I don’t like having to hit the pads really hard to get a note from them.

For instance, I find the Launchpad Pro mk3 pads to be just about perfect.

I’ve been doing more research, and it seems like the folks behind OffGrid aren’t very good on customer service, and have let down a lot of their Kickstarter backers. I hope they don’t turn into another Roli.

I’m a very happy offgrid Kickstarter backer for what it’s worth. Received mine in December, really pleased with it. I send them nice emails and they send me nice emails.

Cool. It’s very tempting because it’s so small, and all I really want is a grid for drums and melodies. It’s also half the price of the Midi Fighter! Although that seems worth every penny, indestructibility-wise.

Edit: that price is a pre-tax price, which is a weird way to list it in the EU.

Reconsidering, now that it costs almost the same as the Midi Fighter.

Also, the pads are very responsive to light touch. I've just been playing with the Offgrid and an Ableton drum rack, with samples set at full and variable velocity and the pads are performing very well. MPE mode good fun too.

  • Totally ! You can have full or different level of velocity so no problem at all ! The pads are very responsible to light touch !

OffGrid just make a new firmware update, they are super responsive if you’ve got question / problem
