Igor Vasiliev Spacefields tips and tricks
Thought it would je fun to start a thread like we did with Beatcutter where people can share cool things, ask questions etc. This app is a bit deeper than it seems on first impression. Particularly interested in people taming it to make melodic rather than soundscapy things. Apart from on pads or drones I so far find the manual recording mode or fixed work better for faster arped sounds. Obviously, given that it is basically a slow machine, it makes sense to use fairly high pitched input.

Great thread idea @Gavinski! May I ask a potentially dumb, already answered question?
Is there a way to sync Spacefields to time signatures?
I have found the best way to use Spacefields is to route several instruments into Spacefields. Since only accepts 1 audio source in this can be achieved by using mixbuses in AUM. You can then solo sounds or layer sounds coming into Spacefields. You can also change the presets on the fly. Mlfo, midilfo or Rozeta Lfo can all be used to modulate all of the exposed parameters in Spacefields. Importing a wave file into Spacefields changes the output dramatically. The wave file is then used by the convoluting reverb. Importing a file causes most of the assigned parameters to be intialised which can then be altered manually, by hitting random or by importing a preset.
I think these statements are true:
I like the "Init"-setup tutorial from @sfm from his topic about Spacefields. It's a good starting point to understand how every parameter works. It's better to create chaos than to tame it
I'm still getting to grips with it but yes i think there is. Set loop recording type to fixed. Now set loop length to, for example 4 (beats). Then set 'steps' to, for example 4. This will divide your bar-length loop into 4 sections, ie 1 beat each. Now in the playheads the pulses will go up to max of 4, each pulse the length of 1 beat. I THINK that is right anyway lol
Having an Init patch helps me understand how signals are captured and processed - I'd definitely recommend this as a starting point...
Yeah you need to initially turn off automation to try to understand better what's happening.
Must say Iove the step and pulse feature. Also quite cool to use pulse lfos with this and turn the reverb down low for tighter rhythmic patterns
Some good ideas here for sure
Another thing to really pay attention to in the manual is the way certain controls only work in certain modes.
Eg. Pitch control doesn't work in direct mode. A few plays with the app while systematically reading the manual will save a lot of headscratching.
Sounds right to me! I’ll let you know thank you 🙏🏻
An experiment with 2 diffrent sources fed into Spacefields
Cheers @Gavinski
I'll have a little radiophonic workshop style demo vid our for this tmrw btw with some codes for any of Igor's apps. Stay tuned!
That would be great, always appreciate your take on apps.
Thank you! @RJB
These first three statements are also good pointers. I've asked Igor if he'd consider a mode where reverb also affects the dry signal, because in general it sounds weird to mix the dry non reverb signal with the revered wet signal. There are workarounds of course like putting a reverb between source and app, but still...
TC-11 in slide over-mode is a good input to Spacefields, especially when using the 4 instruments split in TC-11. I found it somewhat annoying that you have to press "Set" for every preset change in Spacefields, and this was always obscured by the slide over window (if moved to the left, then the preset list was obscured). Not sure why Igor wants to have this "Step" action? Is it to transition between presets without leaving the list?
I have said to Igor already several times i don't like the preset system in his apps. Many share that view. I hope he comes up with a better one.
Set a timer alarm to remind you not to lose hours ... it is a Blackhole sucking in the very fabric of the spacetime continuum!!
I like the combination of Spacefields with FAC Alteza or Rymdigare in the follow chain. Put CHOWTapeModel in front for even more immersion, or Replicant 2 for happy accidents.
The only downside i have is the tweaking of signal threshold. There is no visual feedback of the threshold trigger in comparison with the input signal. If there was an indicator (light blue) in the VU-meter on the left.
I have also said to Igor i can't understand why it lacks the threshold meter that Beatcutter has. Would be useful
Looks like another amazing update on the way:
🤯🔥
Damn that does look good!
I love Spacefields, and this thread is really helpful @Gavinski.
Agree, I missed this thread before.
Great! I'm sure we'll need one for Glitchscaper too probably. It's not as complicated as Beatcutter but has a few confusing aspects to it. Cool app tho for sure
