MacOS 12.3 and iPadOS 15.4 - is iDAM broken for anyone else?!?

  • Monterey 12.4 is here. Can someone confirm if the problems with IDAM have disappeared?

My problem with Puremagnetik plugins is still there, so it's a good way to see if both are related with something weird in the bitrate conversion, introduced with the latest Monterey updates.

  • Just tried a quick test with 12.4 & 15.5 and things seem good. Have had YT, Drambo (standalone), aum (beep’s radio) and Animoog (standalone) all running into Bitwig for a while with no breakups.

  • So far I also didn't had any more issues with IDAM with 12.4&15.5 :). This looks promising!

I talked directly to Apple support for Logic Pro, and no one ever heard of IDAM (Inter Device Audio MIDI). However, one tech had me move all the audio components out of the folder into a temporary folder on the desktop. The components folder is located: Macintosh HD, Library, Audio, Plug-Ins, Components.

After rebooting the iPad, and re-enabling IDAM, it finally worked (see *edit below). I am not getting the audio glitches in Logic Pro so far. I have slowly put back components I really want, back into the Components folder, and everything still works. You have to quit Logic Pro each time you want to move components. I had some really old components that dated back to 2006 that I just kept in an archive folder; and did not reinstall them.

*Edit: After a few days of testing, the audio glitching has been mostly eliminated. I did get some glitching when using Synthmaster 2 iOS in the stand alone mode. It has worked OK when using this synth in AUM. I think Apple still needs to fix the iPadOS when using IDAM.

After updating to iPadOS 15.5, things seem to be working so far; no distortion with IDAM to Logic Pro. However, I cannot use IDAM and the Logic Remote app together. There seems to be a feedback loop occurring when I switch to Logic Remote.

  • Can confirm on my end that things seem to be working since the new update. Apple saves the day??

  • As this is being touted as the release that takes Universal Control off beta, I have a hunch that this must have been something with Universal Control breaking iDAM...

  • What’s the state of this at the current time?

Personally it's working fine for me. Through Bitwig and through Logic...I have had varying glitches over the last couple of years, but right now it's all playing together nicely.

  • Working good for me also, with audio and midi transferring between iPad Pro and Logic Pro on the Mac; with the exception that audio will not pass from Logic Pro to the iPad. That is by design. I wish Apple could add that functionality.

In my experience iDAM now seems to be even more stable than it was pre-Monterey. I haven't experienced any glitching at all where previously I would get the occasional clicks and pops. I'm using a 2018 11" iPad Pro and a 2021 M1 Pro MBP with Reaper and Logic as my macOS daws.

I was using it the other day, after not for ages, and found the iPad to indicate 2 inputs and 0 outputs (in Audio Midi thingy app on the Mac) which is clearly incorrect, as was getting sound over the outputs eventually into the Mac (once I’d set the synth on the iPad to background audio etc as I forgot).

However, I was getting a powerful bassline from Moog Model D that was not only pinning max fsd, but flattening the curves. Literally as loud as it could possibly be. No detectable distortion, but it’s super super loud, and offered no way of taming it. Oh well, ever since I was young with tape recorders I habitually recorded hot, far too hot, so I used it, but it seemed strange.
