A collaboration of sorts: my noise and @gravitas Lo-Fi Koala percussion samples

@Sawiton apparently suggested @Gravitas and I should collaborate, and to that end @gravitas kindly offered to share a Koala Lo-Fi kit he’d made for use in a track. This is very light touch collaboration of course (perhaps wisely, @gravitas has his reputation to think of, after all ;)! )

So this is the result:

I know I haven’t really shown the kit at it’s best, because I tend not to major on percussion parts (or indeed verses, choruses, tunes…) in my stuff (it’s kind of the opposite of EDM), but I hope you’ll agree there is something in the lovely understatement of the kit which works nicely here. All vocals courtesy of Talker, and Herman Melville. Thar she blows! :)

  • Awesome "light" collab!

Which is funny. If I recall right, you used to play the drums, right?
Out of curiosity, what apps have you been dabbling with lately?

  • @Svetlovska

    Reputation?
If you only knew. Lololol. 😁
    It sounds really cool.

It was a really good suggestion from @Sawiton for sure. 🙏🏾

    Hi,

@Gravitas : pleased (relieved?) you think it cool. :)

Yes, many thanks to @Sawiton for the blind date ;)

@senhorlampada : thanks for the listen, and those kind words :)

Yes: I was expecting maybe a set of stems to mess with, but @Gravitas surprised me with a really cool set of dirty percussion sounds instead, already set up and arranged into some patterns inside a Koala session, so I just took one of these, and built the track around it instead, using Models D and 15, and to keep the lo-Fi theme going, LoFi piano, all sequenced by ZOA, Euclidean, and for the main Bassline, a captured Atom loop.

Well remembered - yes, I was a drummer, many many years ago, so perhaps it is kind of weird that I tend not to do drums (other than an obligatory Doom Drum, usually from BLEASS Sidekick) as an ex-drummer, now, but a) you never saw me drum - or indeed fall off my drum throne when I got over excited (regular occurrence); and b) I rarely do anything accidentally or otherwise these days which is organised enough to benefit from a bit of strict tempo.

Finally, c) drumming for me was always a primarily physical thing. (I’m sure my band mates felt the same way about my approach, over anything, err… musical), so programming beats just doesn’t float my boat in the same way. Luckily, @Gravitas was on hand on this occasion…

Yes, apps: This week I have mostly been delving into SpaceFields. I tried it here, but it wasn’t required. The Model D. Bassline was instead the main inspiration once I had the beat to weave round.

I don’t do blind dates often but that was good one. :)

The percussion sounds were recorded directly into Koala Sampler
using my iphone after a really intense drum practice session.
I had it in my mind to send you something but I wanted to do
something different other than sending stems.
It turned out really well I must say,

    but a) you never saw me drum - or indeed fall off my drum throne when I got over excited (regular occurrence);

Ahh so I’m not the only one to have fallen of stage when seated on a drum throne.
I did that during a sound check before a gig and surprised myself by landing on my feet.
The band members looked down in surprise.

    a) because I fell and landed on my feet b) I looked like it was the most natural thing to do.

    The combination sounds fab.
    Well done.

  • Really awesome reading all your notes on the music making process
And drum throne diving  my weekend is now whole

  • Well look at me, I’m a matchmaker! And what a beautiful, if somewhat twisted offspring you two have created. Personally @Svetlovska, I find a little percussion to be becoming to your art. Just my opinion. And thank you @Gravitas for the mention. I just guessed there was more common ground between you two than what was showing at the time. Love the piece! (and the peace 😉)

  • @senhorlampada : thank you! Bonus fact: I used to play along with an early Roland drum machine , the DR 55 at our gigs, and a JHS Syndrum, for that OMD vibe. The guitarist took my start stop footswitch off me, and used it himself when I got too far out of time with the drum machine. Which was often…

@Sawiton: glad you liked it. Thanks for the date ;)

  • In the words of my mentor, " Wicked!". That's pretty cool. Interesting use of Koala Sampler. I thought @Gravitas would have gone Drambo.

My suggestion from a production standpoint would be to evolve the talker vocals, so that it's more impactful. Use of reverb at some points for heavy emphasis at some points, a fading ping pong delay with some panning to give the feeling of space, and maybe adjust the formant of the talker so it goes deep/higher at some points to give the feeling of movement.

But that's just me being nit-picky. Great job. Impressed with the willingness to step out of your regular production style and collaborate with a different artist.

Using dRambo would’ve been predictable. 😏

Interesting viewpoint though I thought the samples of the speaker were impactful enough.
The speaker is quoting lines from a book called “Moby Dick” which
is beyond legendary as a literary work, it has history.
It’s one of those books that is on school curriculums and such.
It was published in 1851 and depicts the experience of a sailor
who had to witness the actions of an insane Captain.
One could draw parallels with many of todays politic leaders
and the impact they have on the everyday people.
The book is a powerful and poignant work of Art.
Anyone who knows the quotes would remember the book.

But that's just me being nit-picky.

We are all nit picky at some point, myself included. 😁

Great job. Impressed with the willingness to step out of your regular production style and collaborate with a different artist.

It was a great blind date.
It encouraged the both of us to step out of our comfort zones and to try a different approach.
The reason why we did this collaboration was ultimately about Peace.
Both Svetlovska and I went head to head on an issue in regards to Spotify and Sawiton’s
suggestion enabled us to seek Peace which is the common ground for all of us I do believe
not to mention much more fun.

    “Make Art not War” ☮️❤️

@seonnthaproducer : honoured at your input, thank you! :) Some good thoughts about the Talker app, but as I’m sure you know it is not a music / AU app at all, which means all manips of it have to be played/captured live as a screen grab video recording over the pre existing backing, especially since my quick n dirty workflow method uses only randomised backings and no DAW, it’s just AUM doing it’s own random thing and me responding live with a screenful of pre-prepared Talker phrases. I’m sure if I actually was a proper producer (!), I could do a much more organised thing, capturing the phrases into their own DAW track and doing proper post-production on them, but, hey, what can I say? I’m lazy… ;)

I would though dearly, dearly love someone to produce a much more manipulable vocal speaking/singing app for IOS. I believe there are such things for VST, at horrendous prices, but just a proper Talker style AU app with fully exposed Parameters for pitch and timbre would really be something.

    Also: I second everything @Gravitas said! :)

    Peace out ✌️

Randomly remembered this post. Funny how life changes, haha. Met up with @Gravitas a few weeks after. He wasn't that far...only halfway across the world :D .
