What’s Your Current Workflow/Top Apps
What’s your current workflow, and what apps do you use the most? I see people mention it a lot in various threads, but figured it could be fun to have a dedicated thread.
My current workflow is centered around Koala. I use it either on its own or as IAA in AUM. In AUM, I’ll pair it with 4Pockets time machine or TB ReelBus for flavor, then SideBand Remix and Barricade for a quick and dirty mix/master combo.
I use Ruismaker Noir as my primary source of drum samples. Then I’ll screen record a jazz song on YouTube or Spotify, throw it in Koala, and chop it. I have also been playing with sampling tv and movie clips from YouTube to use as vocals.
What about you?

Trying to go “all in” with Loopy Pro. I have a pretty basic eight-track-esque setup (eight colours with four clips each) controlled by an MPD226. One delay send (Other Desert Cities), TB’s ReelBus and Barricade on the master track, insert effects depending on the track. I also have an auto slice that I assign when I want to mangle a particular loop.
Since Loopy Pro still doesn’t have MIDI looping, I’m playing everything live which is quite enjoyable. However, it’s impossible to ignore how sloppy a player I’ve become since ditching my Tascam 788 — apparently I rely heavily MIDI quantization. Main drum machine/synth is my Korg Electribe 2 Sampler, and main sound source is generally electric guitar.
Mine is always changing 😀….. Currently dabbling with some hardware pieces & having a great time with them alongside the iPad. Something in my head is telling me that I have been underusing Koala (esp with the new updates) - so I’ll have a go at that for a while.
Love seeing the mix of hardware and software happening. Makes me think I need to get some legit hardware.
You shouldn't hang out with drug users... they oversell the benefits. Then you're hooked.
😂
Do yourself a favour and start out with Korg Volcas, Pocket Operators, much of the Berhinger stuff - anything that has a ‘sync in’ option. You can use the Korg SyncKontrol app to link the tempo to Ableton Link if you have another old Apple device lying around. There’s also a download for android I believe. This means you will not even have to think about midi 🤗👍
I have a couple P.O.’s, but I’ve gotten kind tired of them. Definitely looking at some volcas. Also the NMSVE midi controller. Maybe a Bastl or 2…
Scaler 2?
Drambo

This month: AUM - Scaler 2 Beta - Rozeta Arpeggiater - Borsta - Slammer - Ting - Skaka - Hillman - Model D - DDMF Dimension D - Variety of Synths
Love all the Klevgrand percussion apps. Borsta may be my favorite of them all right now.
I don’t have a specific workflow as it changes on a per track basis, but I have been using Beatly Pro a lot lately.
I also bought Borsta, Spacefields, Pure Piano, and Samplewiz 2 within the last couple weeks I I’ve been diving into those a lot.
Korg Gadget
Mostly sitting at the piano and playing, then I'll take ideas to the iPad. No apps really get used more than others - I just see if I can figure out what might be the most useful thing to use.
A longish hardware chain going into drambo mostly with just barricade on the master with the tape effect and a teeny bit of the compressor. I run all my midi stuff to the hardware with the rozeta stuff, Riffer, pure acid, and then the mirack sequencers, especially the mutable instruments stuff, and I also use mirack and Drambo for modulation on my eurorack. I’ve used spacefields a lot as well with the setup and a few reverbs
Basically same here, Drambo and hardware.
I have a second iPad and a few old iphones I use for running instruments standalone into hardware fx too.
I’ve been using these a lot since they form the basis of my homebrew NDLR:
[MIDI control surface] > Mfxconvert > ChordPolyPad > Polythemus > StepPolyArp (all inside AUM)
^ that chain facilitates my current jam-based workflow. For some tracks Polythemus sends direct to synth rather than through SPA.
Find myself adding these FX quite a bit: Turnado (loads), Shaper2, Velvet Machine, au3fx:Dub, Filterstation2, Discord4, DAW Cassette
And synth-wise: Synthmaster One (getting more into wavetables), Lorentz, Fractal Bits (drums)
ZOA in AUM driving various synths along with Hammerhead to a main bus. 4-Pockets multitap delay and cloud stratosphere reverb on the main bus. Recording the audio and transferring to Cubasis for overdubbing with further sounds.
Using my own presets from Mitosynth, Kaspar, Mersenne, Lagrange, Laplace, Sunrizer, Addstation, Synth One, Primer.
It’s a new workflow for me, having put Gadget aside for a while.
Yeah I like keeping my old devices around cos I’ll use an old iPhone as another modulation source for my euro and a couple iPads for more modulation or sample sources, midi controller etc. They really come in handy
Loopy Pro as host for als sorts of iOS apps (Gadget, Module, Animoog, Synth One, 909 Drums, etc.) a Presonus AR16 mixer as interface with some keyboards, bass, guitar, mics and a Roland e-drumkit plugged in. Love it.
Koala on a phone as a scratchpad export to Ableton
I just made an update to my flow actually. I decided to try making drum loops in Beatly Pro and throwing them into Koala instead of handling my drums directly in Koala. I’m liking that direction better, so I’m going to stick with that for a while.
Aum as host, as Drambo sometimes limits me with the 16 assignable controls, then Drambo for various things, koala with korg pad and kontrol for patterns and controls, pure acid with a korg nano kontrol, Zeeon with nano kontrol, and or some other synths. Synths sequenced mostly with Rosetta bassline or Euclidean. Patterns also mapped. Got a Model:cycles to take some steam of my iPad for added hands-on percussion etc. I like adding the Launchpad app to this mix, for additional loops without having too many extra synths etc, controlled with my launchpad and launch control xl, but struggling with sync wich drives me nuts.
Wanted to add my laptop, but the stupid cck can't do idam and being connected to a hub and then things get too complicated mapping controls and out off sync when using wifi. Somehow my iPad and Mac air don't connect with Bluetooth.
All in all great for jamming, which is all I do. Easily can just take koala and the model cycles, or launchpad and koala, easily add a nano and pure acid etc.
I really appreciate all the small and cheap controllers all bought second hand for peanuts, and the model cycles for 200€
Very much in anticipation for the Big Drambo update and see if I can make Drambo host!
