iPad Air 5 or Pro (256GB)?
I'm about to upgrade my Air 3, not because it's not powerful enough for my needs, but the 64GB storage is too small.
So I'm looking for a new 256GB model (more than 256GB is not an option because of its price)
The candidates are the new Air 5 and the 11' Pro.
The only advantage of the Pro for me is the 4 speakers. I don't care the 120Hz screen, the triple camera or the Lidar.
However what I'm worried about is the faceID in the Pro. I got used to the Touch Id on my Air 3 and I find it very convenient, especially to unlock the screen.
Would you please share your experience with the faceID, how convenient is it when you make music?
I'm afraid that I'll struggle with tilting the iPad in the right angle to get its screen unlocked.
I used to place my iPad on my piano's music rest or lay it on my synth, so I don't always look directly (perpendicularly) into it's camera.

Air 5 seems to have a very thin rear cover - maybe the next "bendgate" e.g. https://appleinsider.com/articles/22/03/20/new-ipad-airs-thin-back-panel-and-creaks-prompt-build-quality-complaints
I hate Face ID but I love my iPad Pro 11“ 2021. Face ID works best in portrait mode. If it’s dim or you wear a face mask it doesn’t work. Quite often I need to type my pin. But I don‘t find that so bad. At least I remember my pin because of that.
On the net I hear a lot of people saying that the Pro is the better choice. Not much more expensive but slightly better specs and more storage options. I have no Thunderbolt gear yet but I think about buying an external SSD, so it’s good to have the faster interface.
That sounds annoying Thanks for the heads up.
Thanks!
You mean I can't unlock it with faceID if I lay in a dark bedroom for example?
Works fine in the dark for me, the light from the screen is enough to illuminate my face for it to work.
Source: in a dark bedroom now on the iPad.
Honestly though, I’ve never really even had any issues with Face ID, on the latest hardware devices it’s super fast and you don’t even need to think about it.
Doesn’t the Air 5 have 4 speakers now? That’s what I’m seeing in the pics.
Pro might still have better quality speakers though.
EDIT: seems it has 2 speakers. Wonder why it has 4 rows of holes then..
At least it’s stereo in landscape now.
Sounds like the same design in the Air 4, 2 speakers, 4 sets of grilles
FaceID works fine for me in every setting I've used it in. Most of the time I have my iPad angled towards my face in the horizontal axis, but FaceID works perfectly well when I'm pretty far off axis in the vertical.
The four speakers are surprisingly good. They definitely do some magic on both the iPad Pro and the new MacBook Pros with the way the internal speakers sound. I'm not saying that you'll want to put a mic on them and record the output that way, but they are surprisingly not useless as far as hearing audio for me. I haven't heard the new Air yet, but not having stereo in portrait orientation would be a negative point for me.
When do you think new iPad Pros will be revealed?
In the fall the same time they are every year. Oh wait that’s phones.
The 4 speaker system is a big plus for me. I tend to go for the Pro.
Just one more question. As far as I understood to unlock the screen with face ID I have to push the power button then swipe from the bottom of the screen.
Isn’t there an simpler approach? For example just push the power button without swiping or just swiping without pushing the power button.
You don't need to press the power button, just pick up the iPad and even vaguely look at it to unlock it. Then just swipe up.
It gets to be brainless habit, you just pick up your iPad and swipe up and it's unlocked and ready to go instantly.
Thanks! Apologize if my questions seem stupid, actually the only Apple product I have or ever tried is my Air 3... Zero experience with other Apple gadgets.
Finally decided to get the iPad Pro 11". It has arrived on Wednesday. It’s amazing. My concerns about the FaceID have gone, it works like a charm. The loudspeakers are fantastic.
Thanks everyone for the help!
Congrats on owning a marvel of technology!
Thanks!
