Dongle hell.

Please suggest an alternative to the Apple Lightning to USB3 adapter.

This is my 4th one to die!

  • I had a few different, but the problem is they sometimes stop working. And because it's topically fitting:

I also made a video a while back that touches on dongles, the one that I use in this video is still working, so no complaints. Doesn't have power though:

  • No suggestions, but I feel your pain. Having this exact issue. In fact, it’s been such a persistent problem and so aggravating that I’m considering giving up on the ipad altogether. 😞

  • I believe this depends more on how the device is used than on the specific device. My Apple dongle is supported by the USB cable, so it hangs horizontally, supported at both ends. It has worked reliably for 6(?) years. Without support they can put a lot of drag on the tiny Lightning connector. I guess the answer is to use lower-cost 3rd-party gizmos and treat them as expendable.

  • Prophylactic duct tape. That was my first thought when I pulled the little headphone dongle out of the box. I haven't had any issues with either the CCK or the AV dongle, but every Apple Lightning cable I've had has frayed so quickly that there is no way I'll buy another one of those again. I don't like their Thunderbolt cables either, but finding a 3rd party TB cable that works is a pain.

    Prophylactic duct tape...

I tried that once but found that not only did it drastically reduce sensitivity, but apparently didn't provide a lot of contraceptive value either.

Dibs on it for band name though!

Man, that would have been the perfect name for my new stoner doom thrash group too.

I don’t know, but being involved in the discussion of the merits of different connectors, lack of headphone jacks, best hub to use, which app is best for …. probably has a great deal of contraceptive value.

    Great point and absolutely true.

  • Thanks all for the suggestions and the laughs. 😆

The pictured one is still hanging in there... just. The problem isn't even that they fall to pieces, but it's like the USB A port was made to wear out extremely fast.

I hope to upgrade to a new iPad soon and not have to use this shite again.

  • It might not be an elegant solution but this is my work around. I hate broken cables and stressed dongles. I use my screen on angle at almost half my body height on a specially constructed stand.

    It works for me!
