Ultimate list of keyboards with class compliant USB audio interface

For a gigging musician (like me) the best solusion for ipad setup is a keyboard with class compliant audio interface.
There is no additional boxes, wires, troubles with connection etc.
One cable from ipad to a keyboard and you are ready to rock.
It's a shame that nowadays there are very few options for this kind of keyboards.
Usually such a keyboard is a rather expensive workstation or performance synthesizer/sampler/rompler.
The number of just a midi keyboards with usb audio option can be counted on the fingers.
Let's make the complete list of keyboards with class compliant audio interface.
It can be a midi keyboard or complete workstation.
First option is cheaper and more preferable for ipad-only sound setup, but there such a few variants.
The main condition is the class compliant usb audio interface (with analog out sockets) that works with iOS.

I'm not a gigging musician, but I have a question. It seems like a setup like this is really only helpful if you're using a keyboard unit that has speakers and amplification built into it. Is that right? In other words, I don't see any advantage if you're feeding audio from the keyboard to an external amp/speakers, since you end up needing to add an extra cable for that, doesn't really matter whether you're directing that audio cable from the sound source (e.g., iPad) or from the keyboard. EDIT: Thinking more about it, I assume there's also a benefit if you're wanting to combine sounds from an external source (e.g., iPad) with sounds created in the keyboard unit itself. In that case you end up with simpler setup even if you are feeding audio from the keyboard to external amp; the iPad and keyboard sounds get mixed together in the keyboard.

Also, I think some of the lower-end Yamaha digital pianos have this feature, e.g, the Yamaha P-125. I believe also some Dexibell units. EDIT: I think some kind fellow has already done some work compiling a list of digital pianos that have usb audio interface. You can find it here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1c1IHAf2CsA9I1oIrQTA3ZzviRVyKsdXwgQ6SS-ZUkBo/edit

About an advantage, it’s very useful and much more stable to have two devices in one on stage without a risk to loose connection, it just more compact without additional cables, and no need to worry how to safely mount an audio interface. And i’m not talk about build-in speakers, they are useless on stage. And yes, it’s another advantage that you can mix the sound from the monsters like Kronos with sounds from ipad just with one USB cable.

Thanks for the list with DPs, but the fact of having audio interface onboard is not guaranteed that it is a class compliant, and it can not work with ios in this case. Some Access Viruses have audio interfaces but they don’t work with ios. I just want to make a list of devices that 100% work with ios.

  • I believe you can add these to the list:

    Kurzweil K2700
    Yamaha CP88/CP73
all the current Dexibell stage keyboards (and most--maybe all--of the previous ones, too)

But I don't think Roland Fantom should be there.

  • I don’t think Roland Fantom is class compliant

  • Edirol pcr-a30

  • M AUDIO PROKEYS SONO SERIES

They were delivered with either 61 or 88 keys. They have XLR input, line input and instrument input. Stereo output. USB input. Sustain pedal input. MIDI DIN OUT and two headphone output. Modwheel, pitch wheel. 7 different keyboard sounds incorporated and also GM midi.
I own the 61 keys version since I started playing music on iPad for over 11 years now- and it has lots advantages to play with that keyboard and use it audio interface and microphone inputs to record on IOS apps.
Who owns one of these on the forum ? They’ve always felt like the perfect Swiss knife keyboard for musicians/producers using IOS system but I think they’re probably rare… I had it second hand for quite cheap and I still keep it because of that audio interface incorporated.

  • Is @alesis affiliated with that company? Inquiring minds. I’m OK either way. I have owned and loved many Alexis products. I have most of them in storage because… iPad: sound module with cards, Reverb, keyboard but never a drum set and I’m a drummer that can’t play due to someone (who shall remain sleeping).

Does a BLE MIDI dongle bridge the gap for non class compliant keyboards?

Oh, now I get it: audio - maybe the CME audio project will bridge that gap.

I don't think the Novation SL models mentioned above qualify. But here are some others I think you can add:

    Yamaha: CK61, CK88, CP73, CP88
    Korg: B2, B2N, XE20
    Roland: FP-90X, FP-60X (maybe FP-30x as well?)

  • also, I think Korg Keystage and Liano

  • Elektron Digitone Keys would be a good option here.
