Tripping Keith

I remixed Skipping and Keith Jarrett showed up. Ravenscroft 275. BeatHawk Total Bass and Jazz Drummer.

This was a bit of a challenge since I recorded the original improvisation without a click track @McD, pay attention here… I quantized the tracks to 1/8 and did a little midi editing to eliminate quantizing errors. Then I raised the bpm from 155 to 167. Added the drums (just one track this time) and remixed the volumes. Voila, midi magic!

Edit: drums remixed thanks to advice by ABF members below. Thx, guys!

  • So… I’d love to hear that without the drums which seem hyper against your sublime playing. But that’s me.

  • Thanks for listening @Schmotown. Here it is without the drums. For me it works a lot better with… Not sure why. I posted it without first and I kept feeling I could improve it. What do you think?

  • @LinearLineman One could make a case for a little more orchestration but stripped down, I immediately get lost in your changes. Lovely.

  • The drums are a little crazy on this one.. I think I maybe prefer the drumless version myself, as it gets easier to concentrate on the melody.

On the first hear-through I didn't have earphones on by the way; second time, with earphones, the drums fit in a lot better. So that's something too.

Speaking of drums: I really liked the piano/tabla combination from Pune Pirouette.

  • Thanks @Schmotown. Glad you liked it. Appreciate the comments. 🙏

Yes, @JudasZimmerman, def works better with headphones…it’s a decision, as I don’t know how to make it sound better on a two speaker iPad. I listen on headphones almost 100% so I go for that. Any serious listener, if they have the time, I think, will reach for phones or play thru monitors. So I go for that result.

Someone like @rs2000 could mix it better, I’m sure, but it’s time consuming and I’m always on to the next one. 587 tracks now… still a very long way from 1000! Thanks very much for your continued interest and comments.😘😎🎶

Thanks! But I have to say that your mix is quite good already :+1:
I'd rather strip down the drums' playing complexity here and there in order to better join with your piano art and the bass player. The drums are good but some parts are overwhelming.
It's a trio that can tell a great story, not the drummer's own showcase.

  • Nothing like Keith Jarret, couldn't hear you moaning and you didn’t stop half way through to tell somebody off 😊
Started off not liking the drums but half way through I got into them. Lovely track.

@Schmotown @JudasZimmerman @GeoTony @rs2000, I took in your advice on this and remixed the drums. Any feedback you may have would be appreciated. Anyway, I feel better about it, so thanks for the great feedback!😘😎👌

  • I like your paired down ensemble. I'm also a Keith fan. I was currently listening to his Book of Ways album where he improvises on the clavichord.

  • I think you are as good as Keith Jarrett. He was just in the right place at the right time.

That’s it! Looking forward to your next one @LinearLineman.

  • Yay @Schmotown, thanks for taking time to offer feedback in the first place 👍😘🙏
Thanks for the continued listening @Stochastically. Much appreciated!

@Paulieworld, to put me on the same level as Jarrett is quite an unexpected honor. I’ve been thinking how to reply to your praise. The biggest advantage I have on Keith is I’m still alive. Beyond that I honestly don’t see me there, standing with the giants. Firstly, I now midi edit my solos… which is fair but Keith didn’t need that. Second, I was never as committed as he was… my skills have lessened from lack of practice (commitment). I’m grateful to the bpm tool that allows me to hear some of my stretches at a rate I can hear but not successfully spontaneously create at.

Most importantly, I’m not a well rounded musician. I don’t work and play well with others, my external ears don’t know what they’re hearing on a technical level, my theory sucks and I have a shit musical memory. That being said, my strengths are a streak of originality, a non judgmental approach and a love for what I do. I’m equally grateful for the tools I have at my disposal, without which I could not present my musical feeling in as polished a fashion.

I will admit I think my stuff could garner a little more attention on SoundCloud and BandCamp. I’m struggling to get to 200 followers over four years. Lol, very few of my tracks get over 50 listens. I’m not complaining… it’s a fun little game and it’s truly amazing that I can publish at all.

So, I thank you for the Jarrett comparison. He pounded on all cylinders in true genius fashion. I share a similar spark of originality and I think I create some things of true beauty and powerful musical energy… that will have to be enough for me in this lifetime. Thanks, Paul, for your affirmation. It is very much appreciated.

  • @LinearLineman There are a LOT of extremely talented musicians that don't become famous. I have played with several of them! For years I played with a guy, we'll call him 'Bill', that was every bit as good as Beck, Page, Santana, you name it. Had he been in the right place at the right time, he would be a legend among guitarists. Similar experience with 'Steve', a fantastic drummer who could hold his own against Billy Cobham, Tony Williams, John Bonham, or any other great drummer.

I'll bet that very 'famous' musician can point to a specific event that changed their life. Not everyone gets that opportunity, otherwise we would all be rich, famous musicians. Don't sell yourself short. I am amazed at the things that roll off your fingertips so seemingly effortlessly. Had you gotten the 'phone call', I would probably own several of your albums by now.

  • The remix worked for me both on earphones and ipad speakers; the drums coming in add to it without distracting from the piano.

  • @JudasZimmerman, thanks for the help on this.
