People have been raving about the Ambeos for a good while. I've listened to the demo recordings on YouTube (including Doug's Ambeo demo)
Honestly, I have yet to hear recordings from the Ambeos that sounded very good. They mostly sound very flat and plagued by wind and motion noise.
Curious what you think of them after you get a chance to use them more.
Anyone got a good price (link) for these? They are still pretty expensive here so I would like to see what buying international with postage would cost.

This recording of a woodpecker was done with Ambeos, no processing, personally I think it's pretty amazing:

Twisted wave is good and reliable. There's a free "Recorder" version too but the full version is worth every penny: You get good time stretching and pitch shifting, audio editing with most of the stuff that AudioShare cannot do (including Reverse!), extract audio from videos, navigate large files easily, add AUv3 effects and sharing files to ftp/sftp, Dropbox, box.com, SoundCloud or with other apps.
It also records reliably with the iPhone screen off / in standby mode.
+1 for TwistedWave on the iPhone but I have to admit I'm starting to take a closer at 4P Neon but have not bought it yet...
Another candidate on the iPhone & iPad is Hokusai 2 if one can be 'friends' with the UI
(I almost can't stand it but sheer number of features make me keep it around on both my iPhone and iPad).
Most recent updates for TwistedWave for iOS have been 'bug fixes' no new features added...
The developer is waiting for feedback from TwistedWave users before he commits to adding them so please do feed Thomas with all your requests, he does reply within a couple of days...

Thanks everyone. Super helpful thread and I really appreciate it! So should I generally be recording at 24bit 44K or 24bit 48K?
Seems like the music standard is 44 but the video and otherwise standard is 48?
Considering the compact size and convenience factor, I think it sounds great!
I will definitely report back once I have a chance to get a good feeling for how useful it is for recording. So far, I'm pretty happy with them in terms of just having a quality headset (which I needed anyways) and will probably find the noise canceling useful too. It snowed here yesterday so I haven't had a chance to get out and test them out which I will soon on a hike. I just like walking around and hearing the ambience amplified and it's funny that sometimes I can't tell what is real when I play back a file cause the spatial feeling of the recording is what we really hear. On top of that, I'm losing my hearing and have not been able to afford hearing aids and this kinda serves the purpose except I have to have the record armed to use it that way. Quality does seem very good.
I think in this case it literally doesn’t matter. 48k if you want to be safe and have a decent sample rate converter available if you need to go 44.1 later. But again, no one is really going to hear a difference for something like field recording.
Thank you!
Can anyone with an AMBEO set comment on how they sound for regular music enjoyment, mixing etc?
Thanks
They're pretty decent, a touch bass-heavy but otherwise very good.
Thanks!
Trying to get away from bass-heavy, but at this price the binaural-recording functionality seems too good to miss
I find that if I’m on the move, especially if there is engine noise, a little extra bass is welcome.
Yes. I agree. That sounds very good. Honestly, it was Doug's demo video driving around and walking along a river that turned me off of the Ambeos. But, this recording sounds very good indeed. Doug's sounds flat and plagued with handling and wind noise. I can deal with the wind noise if the basic recordings when he was in the car sounded decent instead of lackluster and flat. However, that could've been YouTube compression destroying the audio fidelity.
I might pick up one myself. I have another one that's pretty good too, but it's only a stereo mini connection. I find that if I have to locate the adaptor in order to use it on the phone, I usually will not bother.
The other one I have I use with dedicated handheld recorders.
It would be cool just to plug this one into the lightning port without having to keep track of the adaptor.
Renewed interest in this one. Thanks for the sample @richardyot !
Thanks
Does that extra bass bleed into the lower-mids? What are the mids and highs like?
Also, am I right to assume these will also work with the iPad lightning sockets? (Can't imagine why not, but...)
To my ears the mids and highs are very good.
To clarify what I said earlier: I find that on the move when there is environmental noise, the first thing to suffer is bass. Engines especially tend to drown it out, so a little extra bass emphasis works well for me if I'm outdoors, or on a bus or a plane.
But the Ambeos are not in Beats territory, they do have a slightly heavy bass but it's not excessive IMO.
And they work fine with an iPad (lighting equipped that is).
Great to know about the iPad, as my iPhone 7 has the dreaded IC Audio chip problem and I cant use lightning headphones.
I do know that you mean about isolation for environmental noise. I was just hoping for home-listening enjoyment that the profile might be a bit more balance, open...airy etc. But I think I'm going to end up having to get some ear-buds for that job.
I had my eye on some BQEYZ KB100 iems for outside critical music stuff. I wonder how these compare. Would be so good if the AMBEO's managed to do well on all counts. If not, the price is still worth it.
I picked up one of these Sennheiser AMBEO mics to try. Haven’t decided if I’m keeping it.
A couple questions for those who have one:
The level seems awfully low. Yes, I have the “natural” level set. The recordings sound fine after normalization, but it seems like the base recording level should be much higher without needing normalization every time. Thoughts?
I’ve tried about 5 or 6 recording apps on the iPhone. I’m not really noticing an appreciable difference between any of them. AudioShare is obviously the easiest and most straightforward. Any reason to be using anything different for random field recording?
Use an app that lets you adjust the input gain. Ideally one that has meters so you can see what you’re doing.
@UMCorps Looks like that’s Voice Recorder Pro.
Thx 🙏
In Audioshare, with Mic selected, you can access 'Settings'. It's here that you can change the 'Input Gain'. You can also add FX on the strip, should you wanna get 'sperimental.
The advantage to recording with Audioshare is that you immediately have access to simple edit functionality, while also having immediate access to all of AS' sharing options
I was going to return the Sennheiser AMBEO mic based on basic recordings in my house basically saying test 1-2-3 etc.
I felt that just the mics on the iPhone produced better recordings (for voice)
Then I took it to the neighborhood pool where I swim laps. I did a basic recording into AudioShare of me walking around the pool once. The Sennheiser AMBEO is really impressive for ambient stuff. Not so much of a surprise since that’s what they’re made for.
I don’t know if you can hear the difference between these two with all the file compression… but via headphones… I’m sold!
It’s been very breezy today so you’ll hear wind noise, but I thought the Sennheiser actually handled the wind fairly well.
FieldScaper and ambeo headset is great fun!
24bit stereo madness
Duplicated deleted
It's night and day, the first audio file is way better thanks to the stereo image. It also features MGMT's "Kids" so it's obviously a better recording 😀
I’m still using RØDE Rec. The recording part of the app is nice but the getting files out of the app part is not fun.
I’m looking at alternatives and also was wondering what’s the difference between Voice Record Pro and Voice Record Pro 7 with the different logo?
@kagamul Check out the file sharing options in TwistedWave Audio Editor.
It's a rock solid recorder too.
