End Of The Trail
This is a very laid back track built around an Acoustic Bass, Electric Piano, Trumpet, Violin, 2 Guitars, Sax, minimal drums, some samples from Blocs Wave, and a few assorted background pads. I used Thumbjam for most of it. You could probably use any one of a dozen different synths for the same result, but I just like Thumbjam. I think the the most interesting effect was 'Voice Synth' by QNeo. I created a duplicate violin track, normalized it, applied a straight-line fade-in, then applied Voice Synth to it. The intent was to add some tension and release, and a few seconds of chaos to an otherwise mellow track. I mixed it all down with BarkFilter TripleBand and MagicDeathEye Stereo.
This is dedicated to the memory of Dennis 'The Bounty Hunter', a dear friend, loving father, respected high school teacher, and a decent man who made the world a better place.

What a tasty track!
Dennis was a real-life John Wayne. Respected by adults, and kids loved him. This was probably not his favorite type of music. He was probably more into Johnny Cash and Hank Williams, but I think he is looking down and laughing. I am glad you enjoyed it. Thank you very much!
Beautifully done!
Thank you!
Great track, echoes of Miles Davis. I concur with @JanKun.
I like the dissonance in this one. It has some Zappa in that. The usual 1:20 moment. I admire the genre bending and blending that you consistently do. You’re not afraid to risk in order to expand your horizons. Sometimes I think music is a mixture of beauty and ugliness. Like strong tastes in cooking…. Bitter, fermented, sour, along with the sweet and salty. Excellent production, as always.
I can relate to the freedom of this solo endeavor. Not being inhibited, constrained or advised by other musicians. It’s liberating, isn’t it.
Ditto everything @LinearLineman said. But instead of calling it genre bending I would call it the Paulieworld genre. Always emotionally intense even when laid back. “Defined” by the unique timing and juxtaposition of beauty and ugliness, sweet and salty, bitter, fermented etc.
Miles Davis...that's quite a compliment. Thank you for listening and commenting.
Yes, it is liberating not having to answer to other band members or booking agents. I like the comparison to strong tasting food. My father was 100% Icelandic, and his ancestors survived on rotting fish and a beverage called 'Black Death'. I like that sort of thing. I don't really consider anything to be risky since I have nothing to lose. Thanks for the accolades.
I've never had my own genre before. That's quite a responsibility! Speaking of 'unique timing', I liked how you applied that technique in your last post. I will tuck that away for use in the future. I'm hoping to hear more from you. Have a productive day!
Great track. You really do have a very recognizable style through all the innovation and variations - very cool.
I got into this iPad music stuff to fill a void in my life. Arthritis and failing eyesight made it difficult and dangerous to continue with my previous hobbies. At my wife's urging I got an iPad and ended a 15 year hiatus from music. Having been a 'conventional' musician I never really considered this iPad stuff as a serious option for making music. I never thought I would write this many songs. I never thought I would put them on the web. Most of all, I never thought that a few people might actually like them! I truly appreciate your comments. They motivate me to do try to do a little better every time. I hope to keep on until the electricity goes out! Thank you so much. I mean that, bro!
Lovely track @Paulieworld . I empathise a lot with your last comment. Arthritis stopped my (pretty feeble) guitar playing years ago although strangely (and luckily) nothing else. I’m now a far better ipad Geoshredder then I ever was a guitar player and the pleasure of creating , posting, receiving supportive comments etc is a lovely thing. Hope your electricity supply continues for a long time ⚡️
There are some great lessons in arranging in this one. You can walk around in the music and see how you assembled the parts to make a very compelling whole.
With a trumpet lead it reminds me of the film music of Jazz Trumpeters Mark Isham and Terence Blanchard. Using this instrument immediately conjures up a Noir vibe or "True Crime" sensibility. I get a scene of the crime feeling from the emotional texture.
But true to form you mix in a healthy dose of chaos and now I need to see if I already own this "Voice Synth" by QNeo.
Arthritis stopped me and my wife from participating in our favorite hobby - Cowboy Action Shooting.
I was known as 'Amos True' and she was 'Arizona Annie'. We used to Light 'Em Up!
I'm glad I had music to fall back on!
If you don't already own it, you should consider adding it to your toolbox. Be careful, though. It's like Brylcreem... a little dab will do ya! Have a great night.
As @McD mentioned the trumpets bring that “crime show” feeling. Made me think along the lines of a CSI show, but with better music.
Cowboy Action Shooting looks like a fun hobby, I hate to hear you can’t participate anymore. I’m glad you had music to fall back on for purely selfish reasons since I enjoy your creations so much.
I can see the kindness in your friend’s face. I’m sure he would be smiling to hear your music.
Wow. That's great training and looks like fun. How many grains in that ammo? Must be very low.
@NeuM Yes, very low! I rolled my own and I used about 2.3 grains of Trail Boss under a 125gr lead bullet. There was virtually no recoil and you could stay on target. I liked that powder because it was 'fluffy' and a double charge would overflow the brass and you would see it. I loaded for my wife, so that was important. We shot .38 in both pistol and rifle so it was really convenient. I liked Red Dot for shotgun. It was sort of pretty with red flecks in the powder, and I had a huge supply of it.
My wife, Arizona Annie, was not the fastest gun in the West, but she never missed! She would often get a prize for a 'clean match'. That is, 100+ rounds without a single miss. I was, on the other hand, a bit of a gamer. Always over analyzing my strategy.
It was great fun. I imagine it would look quite ridiculous to an outsider. A bunch of grown-ass men and women dressed up as cowboys, shooting real guns with live ammo. Good friends, good times, good memories.
Thanks Mac! Dennis (Bounty Hunter) was truly a great guy and I'm proud to have known him. His students loved him, and he was highly regarded at our club. If you watched the video, you can see that there is a lot of running and gunning. I actually fell once and dropped a pistol. That was an immediate disqualification. I decided that it would be best for me to hang it up. I miss the camaraderie and the competition, but we were always 'safety first' and I didn't want to be the one to break the tradition.
So, now I do music. I appreciate that you take time to listen. It's few minutes of your life that you will never get back, and I am glad you are spending it with me. Thank you so much!
