M.A.D., a (dystopian?) tale inspired by Kubrick and The Velvet Underground
M.A.D. (Mutually Assured Destruction)
To echo @LinearLineman in one of his recent post, Kubrick's sarcastic Dr. Strangelove has never been more enlightening and tragically fun. Things never change after all.
iPad only. Thanks to @audiomodeling for all their amazing SWAM apps.
Lyrics in the spoiler
Dancing nukes in the atmosphere
Enjoy Beautiful fireworks
And skies like we never seen before
Bye-bye, blue sky ! Bye-bye !!!First we saw it on the screen
Apocalyptic visions
Then came a blast like no other before
Then we lost all transmissionsGeiger counters went crazy nuts
Atomic Evolution
Newborn babies like we never seen before
When Darwin meets OppenheimerMuddy rivers all across the land
Iodine water to quench your thirst
So pure and clean you could drink your day away
Then our dreams got flushed awayBreathe, breathe in the air
Should you even care ?
When mushroom clouds are spreading evermore
You won't need air anymore !!!Mutually Assured Destruction
A modern age of wisdom
Treat your neighbours the way you treat yourself
Shoulder taps and shaking handsDancing nukes in the atmosphere
Beautiful fireworks ...
For wealthy men surviving in a bunker,
Bye-bye blue sky, bye-bye ...

Just been on an unfathomably stupid work tour, this the first thing I played after resetting my brain chemistry with some sleep… real nice work, appreciate the storytell and the groove.
Damn, this is mighty fine stuff 👍👌👍👌👍👌👍
Thank you for listening and the kind words. Glad you enjoyed it. If I may ask, what kind of work tour?
Coming from a master of hypnotic weirdness like you, I take this as a real compliment! Thank you for listening and dropping nice words!
Working on factory equipment in the UK… totally, like, rock and roll. Lots of long hours followed by, “oh, while you’re here mate, can you have a quick look at this..?”
I wish I had more time to play on my ipad. I’ll put a project (or two!) up on here sooner or later, this forum is enormously important to me and I want to participate.
Sometimes though, if I do get a weekend off, all I can really do is stare at the wall, dribble a bit and giggle at my own shadow. At least on Saturday. Then it’s off to ios wonderland on Sunday, for yet another unfinishable project…
Wow, Jean, you sure extended/expressed yourself on this one! Maybe it’s cause you’re living in the land of Godzilla.
I loved it… and you’ll forgive me… I think it was intended…. I was laughing along with the horror. Real Slim Pickens stuff riding the H bomb to hell with a pocketful of prophylactics and rubles. Indeed, “tragic fun”. Thanks for creating it. Maybe your best to date.
You are very very welcome and you've made a middle aged man blush 😊
Really loving the woozy strings and telephone vocals. Yes, I see the Velvet lineage… Also got shades of Pulp too. Great cold ending.
This is incredibly good, JanKun. Seriously.
Thank you for creating and sharing.
Wicked!
Would you ever consider the possibility of a collaboration, that is, writing lyrics and singing for one of my tracks? I have a ton of unposted material for you to choose from, or we could just start from scratch. I post most of my stuff on Bandcamp, but it's just a fraction of what I have done. Please feel free to check it out and let me know if you think you might ever be interested.
A laughter as the last defence against barbarism 😃.
It was not particularly meant to be funny per se. More like a sarcastic reflection on the irony of the world we built.
Good resolutions taken at summit but not followed by real actions won't solve climate change. Just like confiscating some luxury yachts will not end the systemic corruption of the Putin regime. These are just few exemples. But this seems to have become a standard now.
When we need to solve problems, we always take shortcuts to avoid getting our hands too dirty in the short term. Who needs to think in the long term anyway?
We should all celebrate the Doomsday clock update!
Glad you had as much fun listening to this track as I had making it!
Cheers and blast off !!!
I like the cold ending. When I hear it, I can almost feel the post blast despair and desolation.
Thank you and thanks for liking the track on SoundCloud! I listened to some of your tracks, I really like your atmosphere and sound design ! I guess we have lots of common tastes!
@JanKun : great minds, etcetera…
😉
Thank you for listening, Jeff!
I am really glad you enjoyed this track !
Thanks! ❤️
I like most of the tracks you regularly post here. You're also Paulieworld on Bandcamp? Could you provide a link? I'd like to take a listen !
I like collaborations. I had the chance to work on a few collaborations with @richardyot @LinearLineman @Daveypoo . so if I feel that I can add something interesting to some of your tracks, I will do it with great pleasure! English is not my first language though...
Great stuff! I love the hypnotic strings, the lyrics, and the vocals!
Thank you, Richard! I think the mix was improved compared to the first version I let you hear earlier!
You have mastered the language very well. I often wondered if English is difficult to learn. I have also wondered what it sounds like to others. Your lyrics are very well written, thoughtful, and timely. I would very much enjoy having you 'transform' one of my tracks with thoughtful lyrics. If you google 'Paulieworld', my page comes up as the first item. I don't know how that happened but I'm not complaining. Apparently, there is a power washing service with the same name. I have thought about asking them if they would like a theme song!
I try to post something every week, so if you don't find something to your liking this week, maybe you will find something in the future. A lot of the tracks are a bit 'busy' sounding. If there is something that is getting in the way of a good lyric, I would be happy to remix it. I am also willing to change a title if it doesn't go well with the lyrics. Titles are somewhat irrelevant to instrumental music. I suppose I could assign them an opus number, but that would be hard to remember and a bit ostentatious of me.
Everything is available for free download, so please feel free to experiment. As I mentioned previously, you may not find something this week, but please consider this an open invitation. I have also done a couple other collaborations with forum members. The most recent was with @McD. Before that @MadeofWax did a very cool video. I was very pleased with the results.
Thank you for listening, and I hope you find something you can work with. Have a productive day!
I like the vibe of this very much - someone used the word "woozy" above and it's very fitting. The vocals on this are great - they have sort of a through-a-megaphone kinda vibe which fits.
Glad to hear you're still pumping out the tunes, my good man!
Wow. I love this one. It feels like a mournful hug, somehow both sad and comforting.
It took the genius of Trent Reznor to open doors in my brain for this type of music which is like modern sprechstimme. I read an interview with him around the time Nine Inch Nail’s “Downward Spiral” album dropped.
I had so many barriers to appreciating his art as music since I was a jazz snob.
The Keyboard magazine article was heavy with “How was the album made?” And it exposed the state of the art for home studio production techniques and I was hooked by the tech. I got the album and discovered the intense dramatic elements that make is work so powerful and stopped filtering for “quality of singing” and re-evaluated why people that focus on lyrics and performance loved this guy.
A real game changer for me and my biases about what makes music good.
This music reflects those qualities that I would have ignored in my jazz loving years when it was all about pitch rhythm and a tight ensemble. I can appreciate music that is intended to be a gut punch against complacency and plating life as a prolonged booze induced vacation from reality.
As a result I take any popular art as being something worth evaluating to open new rooms in my artistic and cultural life.
This is really good work. I’d be proud to have produced this to speak this moment in history.
Throughout human history sociopaths have come to power, sooner or later one will rise in a nation with nukes, stop the insanity. Ban the bomb.
Thank you Dave!
Glad you liked it.
How's your life in Italy? Where are you based?
Thank you for listening! I take this as a real compliment. It describes very well the state I was in when creating it !
Italy is very calming for me - I am much more at peace here that I ever was in America. We are based in Verona at the moment.
Hope you're doing well, my man - can't wait to hear the next tune!
That was fantastic! Very VU-like, I guess I've been missing this sort of thing. Well, not the nuclear anxiety, the VU stuff.
"Downward Spiral" has been a huge source of inspiration when it came out and still is to this day. This influence obviously doesn't show in my humble creations stylistically. And Trent Reznor's level of mastery will always remain "The Impossible Dream". But I feel honoured that, somehow, you drew some parallels here.
There's no need to be a virtuoso as long as you stay true enough to speak your heart and try to push your limits to the best of your abilities at a given time.
I still believe that Human voice, no matter its limitations, is one the most powerful instrument. And sure hope this will remain the same until the last Man on earth dies. F... A.I.
We can turn our words to bullets or sweet caresses.
And happiness is a warm gun.
Bang, bang, shoot, shoot.
