Title pretty much says it all.

Would really love the ability to acknowledge comments without necessarily having to reply. I'm not suggesting a huge set, nor that we get the ability to be dismissive or negative via emoji.

This is the set used on another forum I use frequently:

To clarify: I'm asking for the functionality to be instated so that we don't actually have to reply just to add a gesture/reaction. It avoids a lot of wasted space and broken continuity, but still allows people to show their agreement, support...love

  • We had this here a while ago and I'm sure @Michael had good reasons to disable that function.

TBH I don't miss it because a "silent rating" is only worth so much to me.
Only comments and replies really put the rating into perspective - my 5 cents anyway.

Perhaps, and I'm just guessing, the options included negative reactions. I'd be happy just to have like, love and laugh (A good motto for life, perhaps).

Also, to be clear, this isn't motivated by a need for collecting likes, as clout. I'm just thinking of all the times I've wanted to show appreciation for posts that wouldn't necessarily need a whole post in response.

But if it's something that was here and then removed, i guess chances are slim that it'd make a return.

  • Maybe a “Bill and Ted Guitar Riff” button? 🎸

  • I run a Vanilla forum for a football club and there’s a decent plug-in to do this called Kudos. It saves a lot of posts that just say “thanks” or “+1”

Let me give you a use case. Some members make some brilliant jokes here sometimes, and I would like to simply acknowledge that fact but have nothing else to add otherwise. A simple like function would be perfect, as there is really no need for any context or perspective in this case (a quote and a comment saying "I like your pun" is kind of unnecessary isn't it). :)

  • I am a part of another forum which uses Lol Wisdom and Wow which can be a positive thing but there have been issues where some members will follow other members around using the Lol in a sarcastic laughing at rather than with, same with the Wow.

Things improved when you were able to see who loled, wowed or wisdomed your post.

I've been targeted elsewhere by people using positive signals in a sarcastic way. I generally have no issue letting people show their petty-ness.

  • Pros and cons to this… I’m on the fence. But not up to me.

  • I loathe discussions being turned into popularity contests and incentivized for 'upvotes'. Wven if that isn't the intention, it is, imo, an unavoidable consequence of going down that road.

  • I would like this idea if I could

I've not seen a single indication of such happening on the forum where I took the idea from. It just seems to work as intended i.e to agree, to laugh at a joke, to give someone thanks for being helpful in a thread, or bringing a good deal to everyone's attention.

Usually the kinds of people who court likes, followers, clout etc. are long-gone from ol'-skool, long-form discussion forums such as this.

    Downvoting

After experiencing sites which have voting and no voting, I think downvoting is ultimately unproductive. A (polite) response explaining why one disagrees, or no responding post at all, serves the same function.
