Back to my roots… yer actual Lovecraftian Dark Ambient: R’lyeh

Despite my recent dalliances with Talker powered vocal led tracks, fun though they were, I can’t help but think that the only proper Dark Ambient is instrumental Dark Ambient. And not only that, but leaning heavy on the slow-evolving drone throttle. And so:

All based off a single 10 second drone loop, run through effects. (‘Which effects?’ ‘All of them’, etcetera…) and field recordings of whales, the sea, and a dog running across a wooden floor, all horribly mangled of course.

“In His House at R'lyeh Dead Cthulhu waits dreaming, yet He shall rise and His kingdom shall cover the Earth.”

Sweet, er, dreams, everybody! :)

  • Beautifully mangled, I would say. I'm not usually into this type of thing, but knowing where the sounds came from made this quite engaging. I think David Lynch might like this. Have you ever seen 'Eraserhead'? If not, you should consider it. It's both dark and entertaining at the same time. Sort of like you!

  • Interesting that Lynch is mentioned above, this made me think of some of the original Dune soundtrack, which for me is about as close to religion as I get 🙌

I cannot believe Svetloska has not seen Eraserhead @Paulieworld. That would be like the wind never rustling the leaves 😉

It’s nice to see increasing production excellence and diversity in recently posted tracks. At least something is evolving in this world other than the level of insanity and inanity.

Now if only @McD and his StaffPad would come back to the party….

“In His House at R'lyeh McD waits dreaming, yet He shall rise and His kingdom shall cover the Earth.”

You're probably right about that. I thought I would mention it... just in case. This talk about Eraserhead reminded me that I was once going to do a metal version of 'In Heaven Everything Is Fine' with my oldest son. That never happened, but perhaps this is a sign. Stay tuned.

    I agree. Come on man!

I’m collecting Apple gift cards and need 24 more.

I might write up a grant for research on “iPads for early on-set Alzheimer’s treatment for music educators”. Don’t hold your breath… unless you are asleep.

@Paulieworld : er, yes. I have seen Eraserhead. :) In fact, I saw it soon after it’s release at a small, long gone repertory cinema (remember them?) called the Essential in Soho. And that ‘dream of dark and troubling things’ struck with the force of a revelation to me.

It’s why I got into what wasn’t even called Dark Ambient then.

That soundtrack (read about it here: https://www.dazeddigital.com/music/article/35200/1/eraserhead-soundtrack-40th-anniversary) led me through the actual ambient of Eno et al, and his genre busting collabs (especially his great pre sampling sample album with David Byrne, My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts) and the noise and experimentalism of the Cabs, Einsturzende Neubaten, the various incarnations of Foetus that was Jim Thirlwell, to fellow travellers like The Young Gods, to ‘classical’ experimentalists like Cage, Partch and Moondog, and many others. In a very real sense, it instigated my (anti) musical education.

It also shaped my career: I got my first job as a music journalist waxing lyrical about that soundtrack, and then turned my time on the short lived mag, which focussed on electronic sound making, as an excuse to interview many of my heroes. And start buying gear at industry discount…

@Krupa : I agree! The same guy did the sound on that movie.

@LinearLineman : oh, you know me too well. Thank you for the compliment about production. Pure accident, of course, but sometimes, I seem to fail upwards :)

    @McD: hello! :)

  • Agree with @Paulieworld on this one re type of thing / engaging etc…
Had a bizarre moment where I thought you had added bird song to the piece. Had to pause it to realise it was blackbird song coming through the open window. The odd juxtaposition almost worked 🦤
Your work is always stimulating @Svetlovska so keep it coming.

So glad this got a bump. It reminded me that I want to do a metal version of 'In Heaven Everything Is Fine'. A VERY METAL version! Do you remember Vyvyan from 'The Young Ones'?

@GeoTony : Thank you! :) Hmm. The Blackbird Mix’, eh? Interesting… ;) My whole, er, ‘method’, fwiw, is based around snippets of found sound, field recordings, happy accidents, randomness, and, yes, on occasion, birds. Here’s one I prepared earlier:

…so it certainly could have happened that way…

(I note that the Music Thing Modular Radio Music, btw, a great eurorack module for simulating the randomness of tuning into radio stations includes as part of it’s default sound library the sound of birds. Which do seem a very good fit for modular style madness, which is pretty much what I try to do in AUM conceptually, albeit without using actual modular apps. Oh, the circularity!)

@Paulieworld : Ah, Vyvyan! So young, so very, very young… I’d like to hear that cover version.
