Beatmaker 2 Question

edited April 2022 in General App Discussion

Yeah...I know it's old.

Had forgotten I owned it. But I've now dug it out and managed to make some progress with a track.

I know this is a long-shot, but can anyone remember how to paste a copied part of the arrangement in any position other than directly following the initial copied part?

In this example, I have an 'A' section followed by a 'B'. Now I want to be able to copy 'A' and paste it after 'B'. Can't see to work out how to do it. There are two copy buttons, each with a different function, but both of them create a repeat directly following the selected parts.

I can select the parts and drag the parts, but without any modifier key (Can't find one anyway), the parts just move.

What am I missing

Cheers :)

  • From what I recall, that's the way it goes. But it's easier to drag the clip around then with BM3

    Thanks!

So there's no way I can arrange this track?

And in BM3 this is definitely possible?

  • From what I understand, what you want is this Yellow arrows to the left-right (and the up-down too if you make subtracks)

Thanks! But these are just basic move and resize functions, which are all working fine. What I'm having problems with is copying from one section to another e.g copying another verse after the chorus has played.

Never used BM2 so I can’t comment, but in BM3 you can definitely do that.

Thanks! Can you perhaps tell me how it's done in BM3? Maybe it'll offer up some clues.

    For clarity’s sake, here’s a screenshot:

I'm trying to copy the highlighted section, between bars 9 & 17 and paste it in the empty space (bars 25 - 33).

Using either of the 2 copy tools pastes the section directly after, and over bars 17 - 25

    :)

  • Try the icons top right, the 1st one is creates a 'ghost copy'(the patterns retain their pattern number), 2nd one creates a copy (the patterns get new numbers), 3rd one deletes the patterns...

Once you've tapped 1 or 2 use the left/right arrow to move the selection to the new place.

That is if I recall correctly, I will NOT install BM2 on my iPad just to check.

There's plenty of old BM2 tutorials on Youtube...

  • You might have to shuffle things around like one of those kids tile puzzles.

So select everything from bar 17 and move them all 16 bars to the right. You should now have a 16 bar gap after the 8 bars you want to copy.

Copy bars 9-16 which will now be duplicated on 17-24. Now move that fresh copy from 17-24 to 25-32. You now have an 8 bar gap after bar 17 which you can move 33-40 back into.

Don’t have BM-2 installed to check if there are any gotchas though :-)

That's it. You "repeat" or "duplicate" a pattern, than drag with the Move Horizontally arrows

Those patterns after the empty space were already my first attempts at shuffling things. Was trying to work out how to map the entire track by duplicating the two sections, then deleting pats, shuffling etc. which...would...have...been...madness :(

But @Samu and @senhorlampada are correct. I'd assumed that copying it was, for whatever reason, replacing the following section. but in reality the patter was always underneath it and all I needed to do was move the copied pattern where I need it.

Such a rookie error. Wouldn't be so embarrassing if I hadn't been doing this kinda ish since the 80's, with Cubase, and having messed with tons of machines and DAW since then. But for whatever reason iPad music is turning me into a Gumby!

    Thanks guys!

  •
    No problems... glad to help

Was never any kind of wiz with routing/midi and whatnot
But I took a beating since yesterday trying to setup my MC-101 with any possible DAW to record everything synced and whatnot. After some tries with Beatmaker 3, Reason Lite and Reaper... finally it worked out with Ableton Live

So I understand your pain

Back to Beatmaker... how are you digging it?
I reinstalled it some months ago, but had to delete because my iPad has no space left  (mainly because of Beatmaker 3, Beathawk, Sampletank, Garageband, Gadget, etc.)

I've also not been a wiz with many aspects of the software/hardware that I use, but I've always managed to get what I needed from it. But the key difference in this case is that I stopped short of even trying. I saw what looked like the replacing of other parts, and hit 'Undo' to run back to safety. Instead of just trying that one step further, I started a thread and wasted everybody's time (including my own) :(

Not that it's an excuse, but i've generally found the whole ipad music thing a mess of frustration. I've been buying music apps for years, but would still defer back to desktop when I had time for music. And when I ended up with more free-time, I found my older iPad to be lacking. Now I've got the time AND a better tablet, I'm just running up against issues.

Anyway...It was due to that that I decided to just see if i could complete project in Beatmaker 2. No worries about trying to route other apps or worrying about blinking lest a 3rd-party effect cause a crash. I also thought that if i could get my head around BM2, I might find BM3 easier, when I inevitably re-buy it.

And actually, it's been 'smooth-sailing'. No crashes, no instability and very intuitive (This copy/paste issue notwithstanding).

I know BM3 is more convoluted in workflow, but at least I'm much more used to extraneous clicks and the basic focus/workflow. I still haven't worked out the workflow/direction my future iPad ventures will use/take. But I at least wanted to have a couple of finished pieces, using a couple of different apps, to show for the time i've had the tablet.

  • For me it's no problem at all that you made this thread. Actually, here is the best place to ask. Sometimes the answer is right there and like you said, you feel frustrated and don't notice it.

Yeah... the BM2 is more straightforward for me too. I actually keep it as my go to daw in an old ipod touch.
hope to listen to your tracks in the near future
