Great stuff, mate! Gotta take some try at this kind of workflow
Not my piece of cake. I hear some rhythm in the main drum sounds. The rest is a uncohesive smear. Too random for me, and makes me uneasy and nervous.
Some kind of Aphex Twin madness around here. Very interesting workflow. So nice of you to share with us.
Have you tried to incorporate Playbeats in your arsenal? It offers plenty of controllable randomisation.
@senhorlampada when I can find the time I can do a breakdown of the setup if that would be helpful man.
@Identor no worries - it's far from everyone's Darjeeling, I appreciate
@JanKun thanks for watching, man. hehe yeah, I kind of had Squarepusher/AFX in mind when I was playing around with things. I'm glad it hit the right terrain!
I have to admit, Playbeat is one that has managed to pass me by up until now but I'll take a proper look. On a quick glance at the app store description it looks really impressive though! I'm a bit obsessed with Polybeat at the moment - the polyrhythmic element of it is incredible and using it to sequence both beats and effects is ridiculously powerful.
Very cool. Yes, a talk through of the setup would be awesome!
I was considering getting ochtatron for a while now, but after watching your video, I am wondering if I should get polybeat instead. It seems like a very good auv3 alternative to patterning in terms of functionalities. Would you recommend polybeat over ochtatron?
I would be interested to know how your setup polybeat to sequence FX (using CCs ?)
This kept me listening. The visual is fascinating and energetic. What more can one ask for?
No problem - I'll get on it when I can find a spare half hour.
I haven't tried Octachron. It was next on my list to go with if Polybeat didn't get me where I wanted to be, but it absolutely does! Patterning is an excellent comparison. That's what I was looking for but on more than 8 cells and Polybeat does that perfectly. The most I've used it for is 16 (all the pads on an instance of Koala) but I don't think that was the limit. I've tried piano roll sequencers for this stuff but quickly arrived at the conclusion that they were a bad fit which is when I focused on drum sequencing.
I'm actually using note values in this example but PB can send CCs too. I had this idea of trying both so that triggering notes could also trigger other events by sending a note value AND a CC vie simultaneously, but I didn't find time to try that yet. The setup is that I made a custom layout for PB, specifying note values for each of Koala's FX (I use MIDI channel 13 for it start at C2... I'm not really sure why. Seems a bit arbitrary now I come to describe it). Then in Koala FX I set the note values in each effect, specifying how much of the effect I want to set as the maximum and what direction I want the movement to go (some of Koala's FX have the centre as 0 and go up or down depending on, say, HP or LP filter, so I had to adjust the settings for that). I hadn't figured out sweeps when I did this but I have now, thanks to Danny's help 😎
Thanks @LinearLineman I really appreciate that!
