Shallow Water in ios realm

https://youtu.be/rtswavE7FGE

Hi, everyone!

I'm curious about existing something similar to famous Fairfield Circuitry pedal on ios. I used this pedal on a while, it is fantastic and i think just tape plugin (as DAW Cassete or RE-1) will not be same thing mostly because of LPG and dynamic modulation. Unfortunately, I was forced to give it away because my friend gave it to me and he does not want to sell it. Buy a new one is also not an option now.

So i'm looking for something which could be a mere substitution at least. I have a lot of cassette emulators, but i have not dynamic filter like LPG.

I know that there is a similar patch for Organelle made in Pure Data.

  • Eventide Undulator?

If RE-1 (or something else) is close, you can add LFO in apeMatrix or using a parameter modulator such as Flux Pro (beta).

I wonder how close one of the sequenced effectors would come, like Looperator, Effectrix, etc.

If you need those exact knobs then I suggest something modular like Drambo or miRack.

Too bad(?) there's no stable PD AUv3 or you could just run the Organelle patch.

  • I have Shallow Water on my pedalboard and it’s incredible. Because if its quirkiness and randomness I don’t think any single plug-in could get you there, so the key is using several plugins together interactively. It’s not just about which plugins you pair up for this, it also comes down to how you route/bus the plugins to interact and fold back on each other and what it all finally outputs to the master out. I don’t have the exact recipe, but I suggest you set up automation on certain params or knobs so something always keeps moving, or something like an auto-wah or use an expression pedal for that “quirky” param. You can automate a sweep of anything but make it random rather than constant. I think the answer will be in the routing and bussing combinations, and selective oscillation. You’ll probably also need a soft limiter on the output, so that all of the experiments don’t kill your ears and it doesn’t get out of hand on the feedback. This isn’t an issue when playing live in a room with hardware, since loudness can be absorbed and dissipated by the room or speaker with enough wattage. So you’re working within the framework of digital and digital clipping which is much less forgiving when sounds get out of hand.

Weird routing, random automation, and a secret limiter. Good luck!

  • I took a look at their page for the pedal (https://fairfieldcircuitry.com/collections/effect-pedals/products/shallow-water). The linked specifications page has a diagram describing the effect design. It looks like a bucket brigade based chorus/flanger where the LFO is controlled by a random generator. What they are describing as an LPG doesn't look like a low pass gate in the Buchla sense, but really a VCF with some envelope follower control. They've used a VCF where you would normally have a fixed low pass reconstruction filter for the BBD. So, I wouldn't try too hard to find something that is working to do an LPG emulation but probably any envelope follower controlling a lowpass VCF is going to get you into the right territory.

You can probably get at least close to what you want in any modular like setup that has noise and sample-and-hold sections that you can use to mess with the rate and depth parameters of the LFO.

The one thing that could be difficult to emulate is pushing the reconstruction filter up high enough to get the distortion out of the BBD coming through. You might be able to get some of that character with a bit crusher that you run through a VCA hooked to the envelope follower.

  • This sounds like a job for Chow pedal master Jatin Chowdhury!

  • I think someone with Drambo chops could get into the ballpark…

Ha, I almost forgot about that one!
The settings in the above video are different ... maybe I'll upload a new version that does what we've heard in the video.

  • I agree with @JoyceRoadStudios, you can probably get there using different tools, I don’t know if this will get it done but Bias pedals may or may not be worth checking out, I haven’t dug too deep but they seem pretty customizable, perhaps you can get close, the only con imo is it isn’t an audio unit. The pro is that if you use bias fx you can import whatever and how many pedals you want and use them together
