Create a tight recording of Ibassist in Cubasis 3, how?

hello Forum,

Something I break my head off at the moment. I try to record a bass line in Cubasis 3.

I first open AUM, then insert Ibassist on an audio channel. I route the signal to Cubasis.

In Cubasis I create an audio track, select AUM port 1.

Then I arm the track in Cubasis, go back to AUM, rewind the main transport on the top, rewind Cubasis at the botton of the screen, and then I press record next to the Cubasis logo.

So far so good, although it is a clunky workflow. and here it comes, the audio recording is way off, it walks behind the original audio stream, when played together.

The recording needs a big offset to get it tight and and in sync with the beat. In Ibassis there is an option to adjust the latency, I am not sure what it actually does, and if it is a solution for my problem.

What am I doing wrong? Is Ibasisst just flawed, or do I need to adjust a latency setting somewhere in Cubasis?

Before trying to answer … is there a reason you are bothering with AUM rather than just hosting iBassist directly in Cubasis?

Yes, I don't have a clue yet to record Ibassis straight into an audio track. Maybe a case of RTFM....

And from some youtube instruction video clips the AUM solution looked solid (with other apps, not Ibassist).

I will try to get it working without AUM.

The update is that recording in Cubasis is rather simple. I create an audio track, connect Inter app audio, Ibassist.

Just press record, the recording begins.

Playing back the recorded audio file together with Ibassist gives a warped rumbled sound, the audio file plays a bit behind the Ibassist track. But less then with the AUM solution. It's not a phasing sound, the latency between the two audio streams is bigger than an kind of out of phase sound. Maybe this is the best possible.

I assumed the latency would be compensated with "in the box" recordings.

I was able to get a reasonable sync by adjusting the Link Latency a bit to the right in iBassist settings. One shouldn’t need to do that, or even need Link at all if hosted directly in Cubasis, but Lumbeats apps often have quirks like that.

Okay, I will try the Link Latency fader to adjust. But it is indeed a clunky method, it kills inspiration.

The reason I want to get the recording as tight as possible is I want to record Ibassist and the drummer apps together on different lanes. I want to bounce to audio. If the recording of Ibassist is "off", the whole drum & bass groove is "off" too.

Playing the app and the audio file together is just for checking the offset between the recording and source.

Just did a Bluetooth Midi recording with iBassist on another device..I think Midi is the better deal.. you can place any Bass on a midi track.. My favorite is Troublemaker..

Edit… That Ableton Link addition is golden…

    Hi @raabje,

Unfortunately I'm not equipped with iBassist.

Cubasis itself fully supports Audiobus 3, Audio Unit and Inter-App Audio.
Depending what format iBassist supports, there should be no issues to use the app with Cubasis.

I'd suggest to exchange with Lumbeat about the topic.
Of course, we're at hand to have them equipped with a Cubasis 3 promo code for testing purposes if required.

    Hope that helps!

    Best,
    Lars

Okay thanks, I will try to contact Lumbeat about this.

I have to examin the audio recording in an editor to measure the offset. Maybe I can cut a little bit of the recording at the front to get it matched with the source again.

And hopefully the offset is a fixed parameter. and not different with each new recording.

A workaround is that I record the audio of Ibassist and a drummer with my Zoom R8 recorder, and copy the audio file back to Ipad. I have the idea the Lumbeat apps work best in stand alone mode.

  • I bought drumlab this week and I think have the same issue.

Link works fine, playback is good but when I hit record, the sample I'm left with is out of sync by maybe 20ms or so. I have to take snap off and manually align the sample so it's in time.

Might be doing something wrong, will have another play tonight as see if I can get to the bottom of it.
