Borderlands Granular review…and a few details on Version 2

Hi all - I don't usually promote my own posts over here, but I recently write a review for Borderlands Granular on iosmars.com, with some details regarding the upcoming updates, and I thought some of you may be interested.

No immediate timetable yet, but Chris Carlson is committed to getting Version 2 out. Audiobus input slot, and Audioshare/Dropbox import are two of the key upcoming features.

Thanks in advance for reading.

  • Thanks Sean

  • Meh...will believe it when I see the update.

I was following the groups for for a long time
    https://groups.google.com/forum/m/#!forum/borderlands-granular

and saw the same promises many times ..I understand that he has more important things and life priorities but man..have people been waiting for an update and complaining for a long time..

Many new apps like samplr and cooler synths have come since then and really it's a shame that we waited for such a long time.

Imagine what happens when ios8 comes out and mandatory AB sdk update...few more years to wait ??
I wish he would open source or donate that project to someone who can go nuts with it...

Till then just wait for some similar project...it should not be that hard now as mitosynth and samplr and sliver and sector have shown

@thepinkelefant - Totally understand your skepticism. But, I like what I've heard from Chris in the past few weeks, so I'm optimistic.

  • Good to hear the app hasn't been abandoned and hopefully we'll be able to see it realize more of its potential.

Tim Wood gave a great review of Grain Science some time back. It's 3 times the price of Borderlands. How do you find they compare?

While they are both "granular synthesis", I wouldn't compare them. Borderlands Granular deals with imported samples, whereas Grain Science allows you to create your own sounds, while also using samples. Grain Science includes a keyboard interface, where BG does not.

  • @Seangarland Hi Sean, is this version working OK with the latest iOS?

  • Can anyone tell me if this works with the latest iOS

It's working fine for me on the latest iOS.

  • Brilliant, I'll get this and import a load of stuff from my laptop in one hit to save time and get a demo out

  • Awesome app, but it's stuck in that disconnected netherworld - Audiobus would be ace !

  • Straight from the developer's mouth. Here's an update on the update...

  • That's exciting to read.

  • AB will cause me to open this back up. Looking forward to it.

  • That and the ability to import using AudioShare.

This is all very good news. It shows how dedicated many iOS developers are, as it's about their interest in providing tools for music creation that motivates them to create their apps. You never know what it's like to live in someone else's world so I think it's good to keep this in mind when we get too focused on the features, schedule, and cost of the apps we'd like to see or have updated. As the developer stated so clearly, he's learned not to provide too many promises as due to his life circumstances (baby, wife, full time job), his free time for working on apps is very limited and unpredictable.

  • the price was increased yesterday to 8 bucks. i should've grabbed when I had my doubts about an update. however, i'll probably still pick up a copy after the update...
