Danny Boy / One For Paulieworld

Our friend, @Paulieworld lost his mom a few days ago. He requested this song from wwi. Long ago, but not really. War is war and loss is loss.

My recent collaborator, octogenarian, and pal for forty years read Paul’s post and graciously recorded a sax solo.

1x Charley, 2x Charley, 3x Charley, Module scat choir and SWAM Flugelhorn.

Hope you’re with your feelings, Paul. You add a lot to this place. Best from you ABF friends.

  • That was magnificent. I'm speechless. Thank you so much!!!
I will play this at her memorial service.
I think I'm going to cry now.

  • So sorry for your loss @Paulieworld . I've loved the songs you have posted; I hope you will return when you can.

    @LinearLineman it is beautiful.

Thank you JZ, for the thoughts and kind words. She had a good life, family, friends, and some great experiences.
I will keep making music for as long as I can!

Mike, please express my gratitude to Charley for creating this. It really is beautiful. I found a few articles about him on the net. He played with Connie! He reminds me a little of my dad's old buddy, Al Freels, who played tenor in swing bands.

  • I’m so glad it satisfied you @Paulieworld. My stuff has been played at funerals before, as well as ICUs and sickbeds. But it’s Charley, of course, that gives the soul to it. I hope you’re starting to feel better. I’m imagining you were close. How old was she? Do you have siblings?

My mom made it to 98 with all her wits about her, tho she was totally blind in her 90s. I see you just commented again. I’ll check it now. Take good care.

  • I already told Charley @Paulieworld. He studied with Connie, too. Some of his best stuff is with Kazzrie Jaxsen, another great pianist who studied with Lennie Tristano. Kazzrie (aka Liz Gorrill) is one of the piano players I most admire. She’s a monster player. You can see his (and her) many albums (including one we did together with my first wife singing calked SOUP) Go to newartistsrecords.com (Connie founded the label with Max Roach. All improvising). I have a bunch there, too.

Thanks for listening @JudasZimmerman. These Charley collabs are a breath of fresh air for me.

Mom was 97, so nobody can say she was cheated out of life! She was in rather poor health for the last few years and lamented that all of her friends were gone. I'm sad for myself, but relieved for her. I have two younger sisters. We all sort of expected this, but it's still a bit jarring when it actually happens. We are all doing fine.

I think I will refrain from doing anything to the song. It's perfect as it stands. I can't wait to play it for my wife. It will make her cry. Thanks again!

I will definitely check out newartistsrecords.com!

  • @Paulieworld, I’m guessing Danny Boy was one of your mom’s favs. It’s interesting Danny Boy was English but the Irish took it up. Was she of Irish descent?

100%. Both grandparents came from a little town named Castlebar. We went there when I was in 6th grade. I actually kissed the Blarney Stone! I probably wouldn't do that now! I grew up listening to Clancy Brothers, and the 'Irish American Hour' radio program with Tommy McNamara every Saturday morning. Good times.

  • I listenrped to Tommy p, too, I think,,.. was he the one that talked about breakfast in his intro?

It was back in the 60s so I don't remember much except his name. I recall he would talk about Irish community events, and friends that recently died, and where the wake was being held. It was always at Cooney's. Irish wakes are a big event. There is a lot of crying, followed immediately by a lot of drinking and dancing. Especially drinking. Sometimes I played my accordian and was asked to play songs I never heard of. I would say 'How about When Irish Eyes Are Smiling'. That always worked. I couldn't play that enough!

Oh well, its' almost 8:00 CST and all hell should be breaking loose shortly. Have a great day!

  • OMG that’s beautiful @LinearLineman. So sorry @Paulieworld. A lot of crying going on around here of late. Add me to that list. Peace to both of you.

  • I’m sorry to hear that @boomer. Indeed, it’s a strange fate to be human. To have to endure sorrow and joy at the same time. What is there to do? Nothing but acceptance. Stay strong.

  • What a wonderful tribute @Paulieworld . Thoughts to you and your family.

LL - this is deep stirring music. It reminds me of one of my favourite albums which is Steal Away by Charlie Haden and Hank Jones. So good.

Thank you @gusgranite I appreciate the thoughts and kind words. I am listening to a couple tracks on Steal Away before I start work this morning. I particularly like 'Wade in the water' and 'Spiritual'. I will listen to more tonight.

  • Thx @gusgranite ,what did you think of Now Is The Time? Better than Open Window, no?

  • Sorry to be so late with my condolences @Paulieworld . I've been dealing with some things in my life and I've only glanced at ABF of late. I've been working my way back through the Creations thread. I'm sorry for your loss.

  • Nice treatment of Charly’s solo. The 3rd time is magical… how did you convert the audio to MIDI (assuming that’s what was done)?

  • edited May 2022

@McD, no audio conversion to midi. I just used transpose in Cubasis. Is there an app that can manipulate an audio or midi track? Play it backwards or upside down for example.
Yeah, the Module scat choir on the last part was unexpected, especially considering the serious purpose of the track, but it happened.
