Koala + AUM workflow question

Somewhat of a noob question here sorry...

Wondering how people audition sounds from different synths and then apply that to what they already have in Koala using AUM.

Right now I have the drum line I built up in Koala on one channel in AUM, it consists of 4 patterns that gradually get more complex.

The second channel has Bass 808 synth with Rozeta bassline sequencer.

I get to the point where I have the bassline I want playing perfectly in sync with the drums in Koala.

I'd like to either 1) be able to import this bassline into the current Koala project I have loaded in Channel 1 so I can continue building up the pattern in Koala or 2) Import the Koala drumline and Bass 808 part into something like Cubasis, knowing that they are both easily able to sync together.

I suppose for option 2) the best route would be recording the audio in AUM itself on each channel separately, save to Audioshare, and then export those separate files into a DAW in a new project? Is that what most people do?

I prefer working in Koala for as long as possible, but Option 1 seems more cumbersome, as I think I would need a second instance of Koala as an FX slot in Channel 2 to sample the bassline part and then export that back out to Audioshare so it could be imported into the original Koala project in Channel 1...or am I missing an easier way to do it?

Any other tips and workflow tricks for auditioning sounds to add to a Koala project efficiently when working with other apps?

Thanks.

  • There are many ways to route audio in AUM to Koala. You might want to add koala to a bus and put bus noes on AUM channels you want to route to koala. You can disengage nodes when you don’t want to send to koala.

No need to to record into AudioShare. Koala can import and export loops directly. You can also save your koala project and open it in koala in another host.

  • AUM will route directly into Cubasis channels via IAA. Just one more way to do it!

You can feed Koala with an AUM input by routing it into a mix bus, then routing that mix bus into KoalaAU. Since KoalaAU has multi out you can create an AUM chain for each channel - leave the main input of the chain empty and on the first plugin slot select Plugins>Multi-Bus Audio Unit Instances>Koala. If you record your loops into the first instance of Koala then you can set the output channels and sequence the loops in Koala too. Below is a pic for reference, the mic input could be swapped with any AUM compatible apps. You can also set the output of any other AUM audio source to the mix bus feeding Koala. If you don’t hear the input then make sure monitoring is enabled in that first instance of Koala.

  • Thanks for the help--I'll try these methods out, I don't think I understood the use of the mix bus feature before.
