Mandolin app (or sound in another app) suggestions....

Just had a need to add a mandolin to my setup and Sampletank 4 (PC) has a pretty good one, but not with the iOS app (which is still, and alwasy will be, IAA only).....so looking for some suggestions for either a Mandolin app (not sure there is one, well nothing came up in my Google search) or an app that has it in, which I figure is the most likely....but not knowing exactly which app is the problem, so yeah any suggestions welcome :)

  • ThumbJam has one

  • There's a mandolin soundfont on soundfonts4U. You can play it in the SoundFonts app, or any other sf2 player.

  • Streetlytron Pro has a couple of mandolins.

  • Cool thanks - I really must get a SF2 player - might be very handy!

I keep seeing the name of this app come up regularly - might need to investigate it a bit more....although from memory it didn't have MIDI input way back, but that may have changed??

The free World Piano application is an sf2 player which is also AUv3.

    I'll have a look....seems Thumbjam is IAA only - couldn't find any reference to AUv3 version :(

  • One thing I've noticed with apps trying to sound like real instruments is a lot of it depends on _how _the instrument is played. Getting a 1 to 1 tone isn't always the most important thing

Say what? Oh the taqs.im or something else?

    Definitely.

You could resample your desktop one and load the samples into AudioLayer...or resample into AL directly.

Exactly - wirh the mandolin to get anything convincing you'd need all that hammer on / off options and more.

  • The soundfont I mentioned has multiple playing styles, including some that change from plucked to tremolo with velocity.

  • yep, that was what I went with - the Mandolin-4U-v3 ...with nuanced playing, it works nicely.

  • I know Bs-16 and Thumbjam both have one that sound pretty good. Thumbjam is IAA only though.

How does this one compare to BS-16? That’s the only one of the 2 I have.

  • Streets ahead in my view, after trying the BS one - I found it easier to "coax" out a more authentic sound...got to be really careful with your finger speed and pressure though, otherwise it does cut through your head a bit haha! I am only using it for one song with one of the bands I am in, that wants to play, and it actually introduces the song cold, so it needs to be as close as poss.

Yes. A 12-string guitar will do just fine for a mandolin part. The trick is to keep it in the right range and get the tremolo picking happening.

  • Probably not as realistic but KQ Dixie has some mandolin presets. I might have downloaded them online since so many dx presets are available for free.

Other then that SoundFonts, or sfz in Audiolayer.

  • GeoShred can easily do tremolo with tremolo rate assigned to KeyY position.
Try to find a tone quite similar to the mandoline and you could have it do the job.
I remember having done exactly that for koto with good results.

  • Thumbjam has one if not already mentioned

Nice resource. I was not familiar with this site.
