You’d Be So Nice To Come Home To
6th in the Krachy sax series. One aspect of Charley’s mastery is how close he comes to keeping a perfect metronomic beat without a click track. This one was 84 bpm. Of course it might have been 84.point something, but Lumbeats only recognizes whole integers.
@Spidericemidas presets 2x from LaGrange and 2x Mersenne in this one. 4x Krachy plus SoftDrummer completes it.

This is my favourite one so far in the series. I like the brushy kit and the whole track really swings.
Speaking of brushy kits, my Dad was a guitar player but for some reason I will never know now, he owned a pair of brushes, no kit, just the brushes. As a kid I used to set up a makeshift kit with my Mum’s pots and pans and play them with my Dad’s brushes. Haha 😂
Thanks @Spidericemidas that’s reassuring. This was the furthest out so far, IMO. What I added had a kind of Slavic feel, or like a Russian anthem. Glad you liked it.
This is my least favorite one so far. I feel that the sax is a little lost in the pitch shifting. I'd like to hear more naked Charlie horn in the mix.
I love hearing a horn section playing in unison. I would love to hear you and Charley 'kick it up a notch... Bam!' I'm thinking Supersax, or Bill Holman Group 'Just Friends'. Just a thought!
@Spidericemidas … most favorite @Wrlds2ndBstGeoshredr … least fav… lol, what’s an old iOS producer to do! I will go for more solo Charley on the next track or two.
@Paulieworld csn you explain a bit more what you’re looking for?
Thx for listening and commenting, guys!
I mentioned 'Just Friends' by the Bill Holman Band because of the horn arrangements. It sounds like he took an impromptu sax or trumpet solo, and arranged the hell out of it. Sort of like what Supersax did with Charlie Parker solos. I like 'Just Friends' because everything sounded like it was completely in the moment. It's like the horn section had one single stream of thought, an incredible accident! I think your approach to transposing Charley's lines would work well with something like this. The voicings are pretty tightly spaced, so the pitch shifting would yield believable results.
It would be a hell of a lot of work! You would probably have to break Charley's solo into many, many small pieces, and apply different transpositions to each of them. Then, you would need to add a bass player, drums and of course your piano part. It would be a lot of work, or play, however you see it.
I first heard Just Friends on a local community college jazz program. I play it often because it's so uplifting and makes me feel good.
This one? Great chart:
That's the one!
Mike, I am not suggesting you do this particular song, but something completely new and original with this type of energy.
@Wrlds2ndBstGeoshredr @Paulieworld I see what you mean. If I had Charley’s solo as midi I might get a bit closer with the horn section, but that’s not the case. I don’t think there is an app that will convert wav to midi,
The rest is just too much work at which I would probably fail. My goal is to make each completed track in under four hours. Then I can move on to the next one. 99% of the time that happens. But it’s fun to talk about more ambitious projects.
There are a few online programs that claim to convert audio to MIDI. I have never tried any of them. I suppose if they actually worked well, we would all know of them by now. This would be very time-consuming, so I completely understand. You have developed a system that works well. As they say... if it ain't broke! If you ever change your mind, I would be delighted to hear what you guys come up with.
Really like the drum kit on this, nice groove.
Maybe to my untrained ears I keep expecting some contrebasse in the mix and the pitch shifting sound doesn’t hit the same, but I think you could argue that the tenor sax is already low enough.
Nice play on expectation otherwise
Is this swam saxophones??
@Paulieworld, turning audio into midi on iOS… would be a dream come true.
Thanks for listening @cityhermit. Again, amazing I could add a drum track to Charley’s unclicked solo. He’s got tempo down, for sure.
@Franketti, Charley gave me a single acoustic sax line. I pitch shifted and multiplied it. Ironically, I have used SWAM Tenor in other tracks accompanying Charley’s solo.
Thumbjam does it as well as any.
How does that work?
