Lightning "dock" suggestions needed...

Ok, so now on to a bit of hardware - I am looking for a lightning dock to use with the iPad and while I am aware of a plethora of devices available, they all seem to be "swiss army knives" when it comes to connections....
All I need would be three UBS ports, audio jack (3.5mm is ok) and power charging capability....battery on the iPad tends to run out in about three hours running the host app and several plugins, so on stage power is a must.

Price is not really an issue, but nothing ridiculous :D

  • If you're looking at the multifunction Lightning dongles, I suspect they won't meet your needs.

I'd suggest the Apple USB-3 Camera Adapter, which has a USB port and a Lightning power port. Then a powered USB hub. Mine's an Atolla 7-port, which includes a 2.4 amp power output that I connect to the USB adapter. It has a power brick and that's your only power connection for both the USB gear and the iPad. Then, if you need audio output, add a USB DAC.

Thanks UD - I already have one of those (Lightning to Audio jack and power) But I need to add three USB devices hence the question looking for a dock, rather than having to add another link in the chain so to speak...I also have a small four port hub (unpowered), which I am using at the present. Really looking for a more "elegant" solution rather than all these separate devices haha!

Hmmm. The only Lightning "docks" I've seen are oversized dongles, often with connectors on both ends. I'd be concerned about the reliability of one of those with 3 USB cables dangling from it. Unless you can lay the iPad and all the connections flat on a table.

Yeah, good thought, but I have a Studiologic SL88 with the computer plate so it all sits flat..........I would much rather use the mac MINI instead of the iPad, but finding a 10/11" touchscreen monitor is near impossible....one that actually works I mean....some do to a point but outside the studio and on stage don't really work properly.

So I need to try and find something to work , neatly, with the iPad.

  • Definitely listen to @uncledave

Gotta go the original apple camera connection kit with charge port, then a powered usb hub. You can mess with 3rd party stuff but chances are they won’t sound as good, work as long, or work at all. Then you’ll have to get another one…

  • This is my work around for the bloody dongle, and anybody who says leave your ipad on the floor is having a laugh if you have kids.

As I wrote - I ALREADY have one ;) only difference is I use an unpowered port. I'm on stage, no kids to worry about :D

Same here. Recently an iPhone SE 3 arrived as another test device, so I now output the audio by a USB adapter, too. I should have done that earlier, as it makes live easer with the iPad as well. No fiddling about with the headphone cable when changing the device; only the Lightning cable needs to be connected. The audio adapter was just 10€, and the sound quality is equal to or better than the headphone output of the iPhone or iPad.
