List of delays and reverbs and delays with ducking.

As the title says: Thought it might be a good idea to list the various 'verbs and delays that have internal ducking. And if possible, would be useful to add a short description of how it works (Whether via one knob or more flexible compression controls) and how effective it is.

Thanks :)

Wanted to update OP with each added suggestion, but one-month edit limit put an end to that idea.

  • Delay3000 has one, it's a great delay and the ducking feature is much appreciated.

Outer Space (reverb/delay) has one, unfortunately not available anymore.
Stratosphere Cloud reverb has one called ‘Onset time’.
    Bleass reverb.

Cheers! At this rate, we should have them all covered within the month edit deadline ;)

I've also added a request to the OP that, if possible, users can add a short description of how it works, effectiveness etc., motivated by your Stratosphere suggestion Curious how well it works, given it's a simple one-knob function that acts on a pretty large ambient reverb (My primary interest was to find a ducking verb that worked well with much longer tails).

    Cheers :)

  • BLEASS Shimmer and BLEASS Reverb both have a ducking feature.

BLEASS reverb was suggested just before you, but I've added 'Shimmer;.

    Many thanks :)

Honestly I don’t know, but I am considering buying Stratosphere. I was watching a Jacob youtube on this app this morning and the ‘onset time’ seems to work less radical than ducking, so the reverb slowly fades inn on the dry signal, a more natural way that just a complete dry signal and then reverb. It depends what you are looking for. Btw, this reverb has a tale of 50 sec! 🙂

    Lunar Lander!

Uh oh, looks like it’s been pulled or temporarily unavailable (at least here in the states anyway)??

It certainly has a great amount of tail, which is nice. Will check out some videos for Stratosphere (I'm sure I saw that HAQ video before, but can't remember it so well).

Since starting the thread, I downloaded the two BLEASS and Toneboosters 'verb demos on MacOS. The BLEASS plugs are very good (They top out at 30 seconds, but that's not so bad). The ToneBoosters reverb is fantastic (Shimmer, Ducking, EQ, comp etc.), but the tail tops out at 12 secs. Still a great contender for a workhorse 'standard' reverb, though.

Thanks! Can't believe I hadn't noticed that little duckie before ;) But yes...unfortunately it's deprecated status stops it being a contender :(

  • May I ask, what is a ducking feature?
Big reverb and delay fan here, but, first time I heard "ducking feature". Live and learn.
    Thank you.

It's just another name for sidechain compression. It allows the incoming signal to 'duck' away/lower the delay/reverb signal, to keep said incoming signal much clearer, but allowing the ambience (delay and/or 'verb) to fill in the spaces. It's much more convenient to have included in the plugin, especially on iOS where, depending on DAW, tons of sidechaining/routing can become pretty unwieldy.

Both of these examples use vocals, but it'll work with any incoming signal:

Effect signal ducking is when you reduce the volume of the effect at higher volumes and increase it at lower volumes of the original signal.
It can help "de-muddening" effected sounds.

My favorite combination is any AUv3 reverb (Thafknar!) or delay combined with Drambo's envelope follower for the ducking.

    Will try this, thank you!

  • Just watching that Cubase delay video I posted. From the 9:10, onwards, he demonstrates two functions I've not seen in any other delay (The second of which I'm pretty sure someone in another thread was looking for).

Blimey! Maybe I've missed that in other plugins, but seems pretty unique.

Having watched a couple of videos, I think really this is just a much smoother form of pre-delay. Unless I'm missing something, there's no way to have it duck the ongoing repeated signal.

    Great sounding delay, though :)

  • It would be great if someone added this list to the Audiobus forum wiki.

If @Montreal_Music or anyone wants to try it inside Drambo:

Just make sure the reverb or delay is set to output the effect signal only (Mix knob at 100% effect).

Envelope Follower Decay lets you increase the ducking time and the left small knob in "Reverb Amp" lets you adjust the ducking amount: Leftmost is maximum ducking, center is no ducking, rightmost is the opposite of ducking: Boosting the effect signal with input signal peaks. Both may be useful for creative sound design.

Love the clean, clear aesthetic of dRambo.

  • Good list for 'verbs. Any more delay options?

    Sure!
Other Desert Cities by AudioDamage is certainly amongst the more exciting ones, with native ducking on board.

ODC is right there at the top of my list, f'sure. But finding the Envelope-follower a little tricky, using the desktop demo. I think I've finally got my head around it, though.

  • If it looks like a delay, sounds like a delay and ducks like a delay... it's a delay! ;)
