The Accordion sucks (and blows)

In an effort to redeem myself for negativity toward the accordion, I present, Virtuosity Trumps Everything.

  • Nice language

  • Now let's see the World Champion Bagpipe winner...

But all kidding aside, I'm not sure why the accordion gets so much disdain. It's just another color on the musical palette.

  • She’d be good on a Linnstrument. All those tiny buttons!

That is in fact what I mean... not that I'm offended, but to be blunt, it's a bit homophobic. That's why those words have continued as pejoratives, whether intentioned or not.

Oh my. Are you serious? How in any way, shape or form are the words suck and blow homophobic? They are words. How you interpret them is not up to me. I'm talking about an accordion for fucks sake. An accordion. There is literally, yes literally, nothing in that statement that is homophobic unless you choose to make it so. I could use an almost infinite number of words in a homophobic way but I wouldn't. If you find homophobia there, that's on you and you will probably find it everywhere.

    How about these?

    • The blower on that rail has a nice whistle to the suction.
    • I took a blow to the head and now I have a migraine which really sucks.
    • I know it sucks but I blew my last $20 at the races.
    • Did you ever watch Blow with Johnny Depp? I thought it sucked.
    • Do you like Blow by Jackson Wang? It doesn't suck but I'm not into that style.
  • Easy now. This is not my word police invention. I am not talking about the nice accordian. Just the other words. Again, it’s the history and progression/devolution of word meanings. Hope you even can attempt to consider it without taking it as a personal insult. Not going to continue any kind of a forum blaze for everyone’s sake, thanks for your take on the comment.

No insult taken. To be honest I feel more sadness for people that are this easily offended. Life is too short for that. I'm lucky enough to have been brutally bullied early on in life and I don't know if it is even possible to insult me.

I'd be more than happy to discuss this but you make a good point that it's probably not in the best interests of the forum. Although just one thing I can't help but say, just being gay doesn't mean you own words. I mean people of any sexual orientation would be connected to these words. If we all do something then what's not homophobic? Eating, rubbing, penetrating, coming, going........................................

I 100% agree with you here. Sucking and blowing is for all!

@purpan2 I've never been a fan of the accordion but I can identify with anyone who loves music like I do. This ends of a pretty grim note from this dudes POV "presiding over the last maybe few decades of traditional Irish music". I guess by now we should know if he was right or not?

  • Accordion to experts, it’s a difficult instrument to play well. In the right musical setting though, it’s a glorious sound. Someday, when that setting has been found, everyone is going to agree.

    I kid, I kid.

Actually, my music theory teacher in college was a classical accordionist and he was incredibly good. He was also a composer and had written many pieces for accordion rather than just playing transcriptions. He was a very modern composer so it was pretty wild music. I will never forget the recital he gave while I was at school.

Yeah. I think Tony was referring specifically to what happened to Irish traditional music in the Riverdance era, where a lot of the soul seemed to be sacrificed to gloss. I heard him perform this air, and a couple of reels, in a pub on the Liffey once, and enjoyed a couple of conversations with him at other times. I hadn't realised until today that he died last year. He was a brilliant accordionist, and a man of strong opinions.

  • I want a Bluetooth MIDI controller in the shape of an accordion!
The knobs could trigger drums, loops, chords, riffs, atmos, drawbars and effects.

That would be ace, I need a new controller as my ancient Alesis finally died the other day, though I don’t reckon there’s one anywhere near production…

  • I’m throwing this one in the mix. Loopy Pro meets an accordion. Stumbled across her as I was looking for videos about Loopy Pro. Highly talented with percussion and the accordion, really great stuff.

Nice piece by her. An entertaining performance.

That was pretty cool. I think my issue with the accordion, harmonica etc is possibly growing up surrounded the horror of asthma triggered wheezing. I still marvel at the skill to play it though. @mrufino1 I know what you mean but there more I've been looking the more I realise you are right. Exposed accordion is not to my taste but being surrounded by other instruments, even other accordions does seem to soften the blow (no pun intended)

  • I was given accordion lessons when young but never felt any connection. ( I hated it )
The accordion seems really difficult to use expressively.

Later I rediscovered it and realized that an important idea was imprinted in my brain: the circle of 5ths. That’s the layout of the bass and chord buttons and it makes understanding key and chord relationships easier. For example, if you know a song with chord changes in the key of one key, it’s easy to transcribe it to any other key because you can “picture” where it fits in the circle.

Here’s a duet, the Brazilian duo with guitar and accordion, of Yamandú + Dominguinhos. They’re both equally brilliant and Dominguinhos accordion playing is amazing.

  • I may have missed the point, but that hat is really interesting. It looks to me at first glance like he just walked in off a road construction day job. But up close it has more style. Is there some kind of traditional head gear going on here?

Also, that was some sweet expressive accordion. Very nice dynamics I've never heard before. And I got the same vibe from this video about playing difficulty. Those black buttons would confuse the hell out of me. It still puts me off a bit playing a guitar without fret markers. You can imagine my admiration for those who play fretless.

  • I've been following Maria Kalaniemi's work ever since the wonderful Iho album. The second part of Angskar really takes off...

The funniest thing I’ve read on the internet all month!! 🤣 We’re taking about accordions and somehow in your mind you make it homophonic?!? All that’s wrong with the world today

  • Astor Piazzolla. A master on the bandoneon. His music forever lives

  • Richard Galliano another favorite

  • Some amazing performances here, especially liked Inbar Heyman and the Brazilian duo… here is possibly my favourite piece of classical music, Petrushka by Stravinsky, played by another duo…

I am an accordion player. I would just like to say that midi accordions are very common.
Many acoustic accordions have midi added to or built into them.
Also I play a virtual V-Accordion built by Roland. All the accordion sounds in it are modeled not sampled. The midi implementation is very deep. There are separate midi channels for the bass notes, the chord buttons and the piano keyboard. There are also separate midi channels for simulated orchestral instruments and organs.
The bellows control expression and the keys and buttons are velocity sensitive.
It is an advanced midi controller.
I use it to control apps in AUM.
