Let's post some tracks we like and talk about how you'd recreate them in AUM

I love Boards of Canada. A lot of what's going on here is just delay and reversed stuff, which is easy to do. But how to get this squelchy percussion in AUM with existing AUv3 apps?

Comments

  • I think the squelchy percussion is created with a high-pass filter.

  • This dude.

    Id say some noodle tracks.

Then drambo for drums using retrig and maybe some euclidean.

Noise makers. Someone said before ( curcuit bending )

    A sampler.

Then obviously skill and patience with sequencing.

    Id say maybe just Drambo.

  • Would drambo have everything to make tracks like this?

At 23.00 onwards. Sounds like either the sequencing slows down then speeds up. Apparent through out tracks.

Maybe its just step sequencing or you base track building around an audio sample loop you made?

So if anyone knows. Its either just sequencing but maybe a tool thats that seems to slow a track down but still in time with bars.

    Time signature?

    I think so actually.

    The sequencing doesn't slow down.
    It starts playing with polyrhythms.
    Awesome.

There's quite a few things going on.

I'm going to have a really good listen.
    Thanks for this.

Does sound like that yes. But a high pass filter on what? 😂

I'm thinking that something like passbot would be perfect for this, but still having trouble thinking what the source audio would be

This concert relies a lot on samples. Sounds good btw!
So it's more a question of creating or finding the right samples to load in Drambo's Sampler or Flexi or Shot Sampler.

Easy. Use Drambo's Buffer Stop module.

Maybe its just step sequencing or you base track building around an audio sample loop you made?

I would load samples that either need to be fired off as-is or played chromatically into Sampler.
Samples that need to be sliced or pitch-mangled in realtime would be best loaded into Flexi.

All possible with the current public Drambo version already.

The samples sound like a mix of water and footstep sounds.

    Cool. Thanks.

Get this. I made an aum noodle when I started making tracks just tweaking a Ripplemaker ( with un-intended clipping through delay at end of noodle. That made me feel Id broken the sound barrier of the universe. Like Lucy ) and said its ok for people to sample. Iv told myself Rob clouth sampled my track and made it part of an album. I wont bother finding noodle to see if its even similar because it gives me inspiration that I could maybe get better.

No worries Grav. thanks. Like the dudes style. Also the Rob clouth with AI visuals is good.

  • What about the AI visuals.

Seems like hes clip launching/maybe mixing with a few effects.

The controller used is for the AI?

He maybe programmed patterns before concert. The contoller is for small and big variations of what he made. The AI is semi generative?

  • @sigma79 no worries.

You could that with dRambo as well using VS Synth and a midi connection.
I have tried VS Synth both hosted in dRambo and on another idevice which I prefer.

I've just tried VS Synth being triggered by midi via Bluetooth
with my iPad connected to an external display.
    It's really cool.

I’ve gotten similar results using anything from samples of sliding crap around on my desk to walking on gravel and just haphazardly finding a rhythmic loop-point - and then filters etc.

An aum noodle. Just synth/drum tweaking with editing via DAW. I guess.

    Ah. Like playing or exploring….
I thought it might be an app of some kind or some aum process everyone knows about but me. Im pretty new to iOS music.

Hi Gavin! BOC ! Love them too.
To recreate this kind of percussion sound, I would look for household sounds sample pack (to me it sounds like water drops
or drain, you can clearly hear at the very end of the track), import these in a sampler like Audiolayer, digistix2 or Koala, apply a hi pass filter, tape emulation or very short tape delay and maybe an app like bit juggler somewhere in the chain and then sequence with whatever AU sequencer you're comfortable with. You might have some luck with Borsta as well.

I like routing all of my iPad project’s midi out to the desktop version of VS via RTPmidi (Windows PC). That way all of my iPad’s resources can be devoted to the piece of music, and let the graphical power of my desktop PC (its a gaming PC with a GTX 1070ti) handle all of the visuals. It’s a winning combination for some projects.

    Agreed.
I'm using my other iPad to do that.
One is sequencing and sending the midi via Bluetooth
to the other one which was connected to an external display.
I could quite feasible use my phone to do the same thing as VS is universal.

  • @sigma79
I've been thinking about the sounds from the piece you posted earlier.
Like @rs2000 said, it's to do with the choice of samples and the effects applied.

I've been playing around with a dubstep sample loaded up in dRambo.
I'm playing it as if I were playing a pitched note sample.
The sound is quite pleasing if a little in your face so it's doable for sure.
I'm going to see about getting some Buffer module articulation happening.

Cool Grav. You have made good electronic music before. Let me know how it works out. I will be trying some stylish sequencing and samples also.

  • My summer tunes. If I buy an ankor soundscore.

  • Thanks to everyone for the responses. I think we might have the seeds of a long-running thread here!
