lo-fi synths

What else is out there in iOS land that could be described as a lo-fi synth? Or that can do that thing admirably well, anyway.

OPL and ID700 are nice for it. Lofi tape is obviously a good one but it’s samples. I have had luck with most synths though mixing noise in with the patch and making pads that move a lot with modulation

  • Also adding a random lfo to slightly modulate pitch would help

Check out patches by @childofthecorndog, I especially like his model 15 pack.

  • Sorry for the auto ‘Drambo can do that’ reply…but Drambo’s dope for lo-fi. Shallow fry/deep fry/weird fry…synths &/or samples…big lofi playground.

  • I second the ID700 for sure, add all the Moogs, Audio Damage synths and Ice Works synths 🤩

  • …oh and Reelbus can make anything lofi

Thnx for the kind words/support! 🙏 About to send @thesoundtestroom this new Microfreak pack then get back to finishing up some new iOS stuff I’m hyped on⏱

  • Time Machine from 4pockets is great for this.

Highly recommend @childofthecorndog presets, Drambo patches, everything…
I’m a big fan. Even tried to get him to join my imaginary band, but he kindly refused…🤟

  • Also great is Lo-if tape : https://apps.apple.com/es/app/lo-fi-tape/id1591581486?l=en
Very usable and good range of sounds. Toy pianos, strings… crunchy and very nice. One of my favs and hasn’t gotten the attention it deserves, imo.

  • The very obvious one for me wouLd be the new VHS Synth by AudioKit (out today, Friday 6th May) although that is sample based to, but still amazing and perfect.
However a really good choice for making any synth, keyboard, drums, vocals etc, lo-fi is Toneboosters ReelBus, that will definitely do the job.

  • I've made some lo-fi presets for Factory, Lagrange, and Flowtones, you can get them for free on Gumroad, demo videos below:

And these presets are my favorite thing on iPad, I quite often start a project with some modified versions of them! ❤ They are fragile and have lots of character (which I think comes down partly to the way you use both a low and high pass filter)

Wow thanks! I confess that I selfishly made these presets for my own use, and they often end up in my music in some form as well. Glad to hear my aesthetic is shared by others :)

You're welcome! 😊 I can feel how personal they are, and for soft ambient as I like to do, they have just the right character and tone!

  • Other good option FX wise to stick to your synths/romplers is Inphonik's RX950 (cheap)

    and PCM2612 (free)

Oh... and I never ended up buying... It's not AUv3. Not even sure if it's IAA. (It has Audiobus), but from what I know Moon Beam is lofi for sure
    https://apps.apple.com/ca/app/moon-beam-synth-sampler/id796575480

But be careful. It's old... I thought it was even removed from the appstore

Also FAC Chorus and Phaser has many vintage options, and the more I abuse the settings, the more I like it. The cool thing is to get a sound to it’s breaking point with various fx. Tape Cassette from Caelum, free and awesome.

  • I like to use the equation:

Any synth + Chow Tape Model = lo-fi perfection (season with delay and reverb to taste)

  • edited May 2022

Techniques I use in SunVox include...

*Distortion module with any combo of low sampling freq, low bit rate and noise.
*Waveshaper module (a soft clipping curve is a favourite to soften sounds up a bit without making them harsher).
*Filter pro remove high end sparkle.

    Detune synths/samples.
    Use crusty samples.
    Use multisynth to introduce randomisation.
Use LFOs to give movement or further randomisation.

*these same modules (with different settings of course) are also my go to make a sound more hifi!

Am also a fan of running stuff through TB ReelBus.

  • TB Flowtones has been my go-to lately. Plenty of modulation sources including noise, tons of options for oscillator shape, and built-in bitcrushing / distortion / limiting / EQ.

It’s the kind of thing you really need to dial in, but I’m impressed with the results. I primarily used to use Animoog and Phosphor, both of which are still wonderful.

  • I thought this thread was about the new audio kit synth that came out: VHS Synth | 80s Synthwave

    But anyway, that one, probably

  • Sorry, should’ve mentioned that I’m not interested in purely “pre-sampled synths”, such as VHS Synth. It’s what I meant to get out of the way to begin with, by the use of “other”.
