Wanted: Rock-solid AuV3 alternative to iM1 with lots of orchestral instruments

Hi,

I'm trying to work out a different workflow. I have lots of apps, but if I could wave a magic wand, I'd have a rock-solid app alternative to iM1 working in AUM.

It should have at least these qualities:

  • Rock-solid (have I mentioned that?) reliability
  • Behaves well with AUM in general
  • Can perform well with 4 instances in AUM
  • Each instance can have a separate MIDI channel via AUM
  • Has loads of sounds
  • Covers most of what you'd want for orchestral sounds, both at an ensemble or solo level
  • Sounds good, but doesn't have to be supreme
  • Easy to navigate. I don't want to scroll or browse endlessly

I have some candidates in mind, but would like to hear your thoughts first!

Thanks,
Joe

bismark bs-16i and sound fonts you like the sound of.

PureSynth Platinum is more capable, but resource heavy and possibly not as stable.

AudioLayer is more capable but probably more work to build up the library of sounds you would use.

  • Thanks! Hmm.... I don't have AudioLayer.

  • For romplers, Pure Platinum is probably the best. As much as I love AudioLayer, it doesn't support AU parameters or midi cc support.

  • AudioLayer. Tons of orchestral options.

  • Thanks.

A bit more info.... I popped for a Keystep Pro. While I have hardware synths and a drum machine, the thing I'm most interested in exploring first is using the Keystep Pro with iOS.

So far it's been pretty promising. This MIDI controller gives me 4 MIDI tracks, and works by having you play your keys real time or via step editing. One of the tracks can be a drum machine.

Anyway, setup this morning with KSP, iPad, AUM, and a few different instruments went nicely. EXCEPT for the iM1, which is a bummer. Tried using AUM / Gadget 2 / iM1, didn't work until I turned off all apps and restarted.

Other apps I've been trying for orchestral sounds and instruments in this context include Korg Module, which behaves pretty nicely.

I haven't owned iSymphonic. Reviews suggest it lacks reliability.

Might try Beathawk, although it seems a bit janky to dive past a few menus to just get to the sound module you want.

Again, I'd rather stay in AUM for a number of reasons, including I know it pretty well and how the MIDI stuff works.

The other thing I might try is just going straight to Gadget 2 to do a few instances of Darwin (iM1). Gadget 2 also has my Korg Modules hiding in there. Would rather not go this route.

    Thanks,
    Joe

  • Also, yeah, the MIDI cc support would be good, but not essential. THe Keystep has ability to control a few MIDI knobs, but that's for a later day.

  • Does AudioLayer require assembling and gathering most of the samples I'd care about? If so, how easy it that? I'll look around on the forum as well, but if you can give me a rough idea, that' be great.

AudioLayer can import EXS24 and SFZ format instruments. Beyond that you would need to roll your own sample sets.

  • Roger that. Awesome.

I also have BS-16i, so those sound fonts are somewhere on my iPad.

AudioLayer includes a healthy variety of orchestral instruments
