Riffler Midi and BM3 Help?!
What’s good y’all? Anyone using Riffler midi in BM3? I can’t get it to work. Had a similar issue with Piano Motifs before @azul3D_Apps added the 2 track 3 track option. With Riffler, it’s worse because When I drag the midi file onto the track, it won’t import (it does ask me if I want to import/transpose). The part that makes it worse is that it freezes the track up and completely stops responding. I have to delete it and open a new track/bank to get it to respond. Anyone experience something similar and found a work around, settings change, etc?

What are you trying to play with this midi file? An AUv3 plugin, IAA Plugin, or the sampler?
I’ve tried all 3. Originally tried Sampletank IAA because it has some nice guitar sounds, then Beathawk as Auv3, when that didn’t work, a one shot. Between each attempt I had to delete the bank/track because dropping the midi file in would freeze it. I couldn’t just switch synths, would completely stop registering after dropping the midi file in.
There are quite a few MIDI AUs that don't work in BM3. Autony, StepBud, Octachron, Midi Echo, StepPolyArp Unit, Riffer, Physicles, etc.
Don't remember why they don't work, or if MIDI Tools is required to make them work in BM3.
That's an issue I know both BM3 and NS2 have. They can play the AU MIDI, but not record them.
You can use RouteMIDI or (the better option), MIDI Tools, to make it understand the midi is coming externally and record normal.
Riffler isn’t AU or IAA, it’s similar to Piano Motifs in that it only allows you to export a midi file (or wav file, but I want to use my own tones to play the midi). Problem is BM3 won’t import the midi file for some reason. Before PM added the 3 track feature, I had the same problem with their original midi export. It would load, but only a portion of the midi: the melody usually. The rest could not be extracted by BM3 from the single file. I think I used to be able to record the midi from PM as a work around, but I can’t remember how I did that. @jon_bell any plans on offering a 2 track or 3 track export like PM that works in BM3? Has this come up before And do you know of a workaround?
Sorry, read it as Riffer, not Riffler.
Hi,
It sounds like there is something incompatible with the MIDI files that Riffler makes. I wrote the MIDI export code from scratch and it's likely an error on my part. The upcoming update for Riffler will have a big update to the how the MIDI export works and will hopefully fix this bug.
I've got Riffler working as a AUv3 instrument and have been running it in BM3. It outputs both audio and MIDI and it is possible to control any of the pad sounds using Riffler as an AUv3. I need to experiment a bit more but you should be able to run it directly in BM3 without the need to export any MIDI.
Could it be Type 0 / Type 1 midi issues? I recall some apps that worked only with on type had issues in the past.
Could be. Riffler only outputs type 1.
Thanks for getting back @jon_bell , did you say you are running it as an AUv3 in BM3 and it’s outputting midi that BM3 is recording? Without using midi tools? God I hope that’s what you said, it will be worth the wait
Just controlling other apps, not recording the MIDI. That's not possible with BM3 from any AUv3 other than with the workarounds you seem to already know about.
If the standalone app could output Core MIDI, then I guess you could record it in BM3 though.
Let’s go core midi!
As an AUv3 Riffler outputs MIDI and audio. In something like AUM it's possible to send the MIDI output to control a synth, etc. as well as output the normal guitar audio at the same time.
I'm not very experienced with BM3 but I couldn't find a way of sending the MIDI output from one track to a different track. So I couldn't find a way to have Riffler on one track controlling a synth on another track. You would have to export the (updated and hopefully working!) MIDI file from Riffler and then load it into a separate track manually.
What does work is to load any bank of samples to a track then select "Plugins" and load Riffler onto the same track. I expected it to remove all the samples and then just have the Riffler audio. What actually happens is the original of bank of samples stay and Riffler loads onto the same track. Riffler will now trigger the samples in addition to the normal Riffler audio if you want it too.
Here's a quick demo, doesn't sound great but you'll get the idea.

Really digging this sound

Dude... I seriously need a new device that supports ios 14 or bigger
I'm stuck with riff writer, which is also great, but I gotta "convert" the content manually into midi
Next update is going to hopefully set the minimum iOS version to 11.
Oh yeah! Hoping for that. Good news
@jon_bell as long as the midi export works in BM3, I’m good. The method in the video would be the cherry on top. I’m sure it will be self explanatory to turn off the Riffler sound, don’t think I’d want both playing. What’s the ETA for the update?
Hopefully June.
