  • Not that it matters in the least, but, presumably inside these are based on something more toward a VLSI rather than toward discrete op amps and transistors?

I find the price not too bad. Class compliant USB audio/midi with it’s own battery is a nice option for us iOS users.

  • I think the integrated USB audio interface is really a nice thing. Anyway, here is Rachel K. Collier‘s take on these devices. Finally a musician demoing the devices with a track that isn’t Techno. Not that I don‘t honor the performance of Bobeats :D

  • Does anyone have the merest scintilla of an idea as to when either these or the Behringers will be available?

  • At the price they’re going for, I’d much rather get another Volca or one (or 2) of the new Behringer machines. If they were $99 I’d probably get all 3 but right now, I’ll have to pass.

The only one I could see myself springing for is the Vocal one because that would be useful to have for live stuff. I can also see the benefit of having the 808/909/606 in one convenient package.

I see it’s class compliant though. That could make the Juno one useful for sequencing other iOS synths. Will wait to see more.

Can I please finally just get a compact and/or affordable LinnDrum so I’ll shut up

You have one in GarageBand. Not only the original reproduced ("LinnDrum"), there is also another version called "LinnDrum Tuned Down" for those fat Linn sounds of the 80s.

Yeah, and thousands of samples, but I’ve never had a physical drum machine. I just cannot tap a screen properly without the tactile feel of a button being pressed. It’s practically the last piece of equipment I need to complete my palatial imitation bedroom studio

I've owned (and still own) several different Alesis HR-16's and a Roland R-8 MkII. Honestly, the best feeling pads are still those of the Roland drum machine. They got that down absolutely right. You could also consider something like a Roland SPD30 Octapad or other triggering unit if you are interested in something you could trigger with your hands or actual drumsticks.

Personally, I gave up all of these hardware solutions and strictly use the iPad and desktop for everything.

  • At least 19 weeks till they arrive according to the Thomman shop.

  • That J6 sounds really nice to my ears, I like the sound of that one a lot. I really don't have a need for it, but that's pretty cool for only $200. Like a little dub techno machine :)

Yeah the three of them together sounds like a pretty fun time but for $600? I’m not sure.

  • Some folks are speculating that according to the Compact logo color scheme this may be the first of more Compact releases:

I feel like one could do worse for $600 in terms of hardware. It's pretty comprable to some all-in-ones but broken out for people who prefer modularity. Also, I haven't seen much like the looper machine with low latency pitch shifting/correction and live fx.

What’s bizarre about those? Looks like they want some of Korgs volca money

Continually repackaging the same tech in new form factors with seemingly arbitrary limitations in each.

Creating is hard. Monitizing earlier stuff is easier. Cannot blame them.

The vocal one is the one I’m most interested in. I may end up with all 3 but I also have the 707 so do I really need it?

The vocal one actually looks like what I was hoping for when I snagged the SP404mk2. I think I'll just sell my 404 and snag this. I am basically only using it as an fx machine and audio interface for my ipad.

This seems like a good line for anyone looking to supplement their current lineup and fill holes with keys/midi, drums, or looping/fx. The rechargable battery is something I'm really into as well.

At least they've finally learned that :+1:

Edit: Seems like you can't record from the audio inputs, only from the internal synth:

Bugger! That was a key feature for me - wanted to use my Reface CP wirelessly as a midi controller but run the audio back through the Aira J-6 and into Cubasis.

It always seems to be something with Roland and iOS users. My JX-08 is great with the Mac over USB-C, acting as a MIDI and 8 channel audio interface… but it’s next to useless with my iPad… 🙄

Oh wow, I didn’t see that coming. Well I did because it’s Roland lol but that really makes them a lot less useful and makes using multiple compacts much more cumbersome.

I do love that they use usb-c, are class compliant, & have built in batteries.

My J-6 finally arrived yesterday - and oh what a joy: class-compliant and even sending out Audio via USB (as a 2-channel device).
Sad to say this, but I was pleasantly surprised at Roland 😎

  • So I finally got a J6.

Does anyone know how to silence the direct sound so you only get USB audio i.e “software monitoring.”

It’s driving me nuts, I can change the volume going to USB input but not the volume of the synth direct sound without effecting my USB output audio!

This means you can’t process the J6 with iOS!!!

Tell me it isn’t so. Bad Roland, Bad!
