Can't get Icon G-board to work with iPad Air

I have the Icon G-board and Apple Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter to power it up while connecting to the iPad (which I've read multiple places online should work), but am still getting a "Cannot Use Accessory" message because the g-board "requires too much power". I've used two different lightning chords, just to make sure something wasn't faulty. The iPad I'm using is an iPad Air running OS 12.5.5 (model ME997LL/A). Anybody have any ideas for troubleshooting?

I assume you are connecting the Apple 12 Watt charger to the USB 3 Camera Adapter. Generally, this works best if you make the connection to the iPad last, because the iPad will try to power the device as soon as it is connected. Connect the accessory and power to the adapter, then plug the adapter into the iPad.

Edit: I just tried this protocol with my similar iPad Air (original, with iOS 12.5.5) and my Yamaha PSS A50 keyboard. It's definitely a power-hungry device, but it connects and works just fine with this ancient iPad.

If you're using a Lightning extension cord, try connecting the USB adapter directly to the iPad instead.

  • Some things need a powered hub. Lightning port doesn’t supply enough power for some devices.

  • sometimes it‘s enough to plug an unpowered hub in between iPad and device, I always use a belkin 4port hub, without powercable connected, and most of the time this solves the issue already.
