Down @paulieworld’s rabbit hole with Perc Synth: The Trail Of Indrid Cold

So @Paulieworld’s excellent zombie piece got me itching to try out Perc Synth and a few other toys on something - Other - in the Weird World/Forteana space. At first apropos the earlier discussion, I was going for ‘revenants’ myself as the inspiring concept, but Leonardo DiCaprio seems somehow to have colonised that cultural outpost for the time being. And so I chanced instead upon: Indrid Cold.

Before the Joker, (and indeed after The Man Who Laughs) another Man Who Laughs. If, indeed, he is a man at all…

Perc Synth on Doom Drum duties and occasional background skittering, FRMS, VHS Synth and Animoog on other noises. And a lorra lorra reverb, coz of course. It’s Dark Ambient, innit?

Comments

  • Now I’ll have nightmares for sure. Your Weird World music got into my head.
Dark but somehow not natural at all. Dental drills in the distance being put to perverse
    Uses…

This is a really blissed out track
Reminds me of the days when I listened to Yellow6 and that whole vinyl only scene in the 90s early 00s.
Ordering through Norman Records based in Leeds

  • It’s Dark Ambient, innit? You betcha!
My office PC speakers aren't cutting it.
I will give this a proper listen tonight.

  • TERRIFYING!

  • Headphones definitely make a difference!

I sat outside on my patio after dinner last night and listened. When I finally looked up and saw the fading sun creating shadows on my back yard, I thought of a brief exchange that we had on my Soundcloud page. If you recall, we discussed a famous, dead painter that was known for his masterful use of both light and shade. Dark, ambient material is quite popular on this forum, and I enjoy it, too. However, one can't truly appreciate the darkness without the light, and vice versa. One of my favorite movies is 'The Birds' by Alfred Hitchcock. I can never forget the scenes where the school children are singing a bright, happy little song while the evil is gathering outside the door. Some directors put it right in your face. Hitchcock, on the other hand, creates the suspense in the viewers head, where it lingers, sometimes for days or years.

Can you dig what I am getting at? I understand that time is a non-renewable resource. We all have a limited, and unknown quantity to play with. You may have already done something like this. If so, I missed it among the many other posts here on the forum.

I guess what I'm saying is that it's fun to be lulled into an innocent, carefree, false sense of security, and then...

@sevenape @McD : thanks for the listen, and the comments! @dasgoods : interesting link, thanks :) @Paulieworld : excellent movie, great scene. I am never knowingly cheery, however, I have been known, from my total lack of musical skill, to sometimes accidentally back into something cheery. I have so little control over my tools, sometimes I just can’t help myself:

I should also add, apropos your observation re the passing of time, that I released The Trail Of Indrid Cold on the occasion of my sixtieth birthday. Several people, younger than me, that I cared about are already gone, and should I be lucky enough to make the actuarially average lifespan, I’m now staring down the barrel of the last twenty four years of my own existence.

In truth, given that my family reside in the shallow end of the gene pool, I have already acquired at least one significant health condition, and am already an outlier in survival by those family lifespans, it’s highly likely to be less than that. From this perspective, twenty four years doesn’t seem so long.

In sum: likely just twenty four short years left at best to make my uniformly doomy shade-without-light depressing dark ambient sonic porridges of untutored music-adjacent noise.

Hell - I better get to it! :)

  • This is awesome! Been loving Perc Synth a lot myself. What’s the reverb you’re using?

  • @HotStrange : thank you! My usual go-to: FAC Alteza, init patch.

Ah yes! Alteza is one of the best reverbs I’ve used period across all platforms.

  • Very impressed.

  • @BirbHope : thank you! (And what a brilliant forum name you have :) )

  • I liked that a lot! Beautiful and musical sounds.
