MultiTrackStudio 4.5

Lots of new additions to improve synergy between iPad and Mac versions of MTS. Should make it even easier to move projects between Mac and iOS.

New song transfer options:

  • It’s kind of buried in the notes, but you can now add up to five effects slots OR three sends on 10.5” iPads. And enabling any number of Groups (essentially mix busses) only disables one send or effect slot. You can add them through the Song Properties menu.

I guess the limitation was a UI concern rather than CPU-related but I don’t find the mixer elements to be too small or fiddly, even with everything maxed out. Very worthwhile update even if you don’t use the desktop version!

I'm glad he did that. I used to hit that limitation all the time which is why I stopped using it.

  • Boy, if those effects slots were vertically scrollable, we could add without concern for a smallish iPad….

  • I have been playing around with some of the new features and they all work as expected, so far.

You need to make sure that Handover is enabled on both the Mac and the iPad when copying/pasting. I assumed that Universal Control would be enough but Handover is also required for the copy/paste integration to work.

I have tested copying MIDI, audio and whole projects between Mac and iOS instances and this works.

The new Substitution feature is a unique way of being able to have a single track but that track can be associated with more than one plugin, each with its own state. For example:

    1) I load DRC on the iPad and copy the project.
    2) I paste the project into the Mac version of MTS. I get a warning that the DRC plugin does not exist on my Mac. I do have it there, but unfortunately the plugin ID is different. Instead of replacing the plugin with the Mac version and then recreating my preset like you would need to do when going from GarageBand to Logic, I can load the Mac version alongside it and preserve the plugin state of both.
    3) I make some changes to the music and copy the project
    4) I paste the project back to the iPad version of MTS. Again I get a warning that DRC does not exist (the project is actively using the Mac version). I can now open the plugin and select the iPad DRC state. I get my plugin back with its state without having to destructively replace the plugin.

    Works well!

You can now do other cool things such as copy chords from Suggester on the iPad and paste them into the desktop timeline (I think @ipadbeatmaking demonstrated a local version of this in their MTS video). I was hoping that drag/drop would also work but this does not. You can however drag from Suggester to the desktop and then from there to the MTS desktop timeline.

Having up to 5 effect slots is going to be useful for some people.

I like that I can now export a mix using more formats, it removes the extra step that was needed to get a lossy/smaller version of a mix rather than a raw WAV which was the default before.

  • I don't use this DAW, but I'm always impressed by the sheer amount of work they do for their users.

  • I’ve somehow missed this one all this time. What’s the consensus on this DAW?

Here is a good overview thread: https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/49522/multitrackstudio-best-on-ipad-walkthrough-tutorial-review/p1

It is my favourite DAW and offers a lot of features that are missing in native iOS DAWs since it is has a long desktop heritage and the iOS code is mostly a direct port. The bonus here is that the developer is unlikely to suddenly lose interest so I consider it worth investing my time in.

The interface is not for everyone though, and that would be my only real thing to flag. You can download on desktop for free to get a feeling for it.

Check out the manual to see the features available:

Are the AUv3 parameters mappable via a MIDI learn function, like in AUM? This is the option that I'm missing in all the iOS DAWs that I have tried.

Thanks for this! I mostly just use Cubasis 3 and GarageBand, and while I love both, I’m always on the hunt for a “perfect” iOS DAW, if that even exists haha. I don’t have a desktop, which for the music I make, isn’t a big deal. But every major DAW seems to lack at least 1-2 important features.

Not in the iPad version, I am afraid.

  • MTS 4.5.1 dropped with few items that were recently requested. The new update to note entry using the Apple Pencil interface makes MTS now by far the most fluid score note entry interface I have used on the iPad:

OMG!!! Apple Pencil ✏️ request has been answered!! Big workflow enhancer for me.

This is the DAW I like and use. It’s amazing. And how the dev gets so much packed into such a small footprint I find amazing too.

  • It is written in the manual but to use the new Pencil gesture then you just need to draw a short line downwards. It respects the current grid setting so it is especially quick for adding new notes to the score view.
