Playing bass lines with a guitar - app comparison
This one has always been a struggle for me, because I couldn't get decent results until recently. After a lot of messing around I got something just about usable from Jamup, but finally Tonestack has arrived with some really good pitch-shifting pedals. I've tested both the multi octaver and the wanger, both are good although I personally prefer the wanger. One thing that would be nice would be a greater range of bass amps in TS.
Jamup is with the octabass played through the Blue Line bass amp. I also tested Midi Guitar driving a Sampletank bass, but as you can hear in the test there's too many dropped notes for this to be useful. Finally for laughs I recorded Amplitube with an octave pedal through a Fender bass amp, but it clearly sucks.

thanks for this. This was actually going to be one of my first tests with ToneStack: to see how that multi-octaver performs.
I wonder if it would be easy to skip the TS amps and route it to Bias?
Also, using the MIDI method, I've found Thumbjam works ok, but play up a few octaves (for better note tracking) and have Thumbjam transpose the MIDI back down (for bass).

Should be possible - you don't have to add an amp in the TS chain, and even if there is an amp it can be switched off. You could route it to BIAS or Jamup, Jamup has a good selection of bass amps.
As for MIDI, that sounds a decent approach, but there will still be problems with hammer-ons and slides. The guitar app way is always going to be better I think.
Or use a bass...

This is (a lot!) cheaper, and I don't have to explain the purchase to my better half....
Buy her a bass...
I second buying a bass. The bass line played using the real thing are vastly superior. No surprises there I guess.
Edit: especially sampled bass loops. You can take your time learning a bass riff and just loop it if you're not a confident bass player. Some of fat boy slim's and daft punk's bass line have been recorded that way, if I'm not confusing them with some other acts
