Zerodebug apps are back in the App Store (TouchAble Pro, Studiomux, Modstep, Soda DJ app)

A couple of days ago, Zerodebug apps disappeared from the App Store.

This was specially dramatic, because a lot of users in this forum (including me) are relying in Studiomux as an alternative to the iConnectivity audio interfaces for sending audio from our iPads to our Macs. But more importantly, thanks to its capacity of making visible all the Mac MIDI ports, including the IAC virtual ones, in our iOS devices.

Touchable Pro is also an essential tool for a lot of Ableton Live users, wanting to use their iPads as MIDI controllers for this DAW.

Fortunately, after only two days, they're back again in the App Store.

  • Does Studiomux work properly now?
I see that it needs to be repurchased.
I tried the beta for a while (after using the original version for years) but the beta never really seemed to get to point where it was reliable enough to use smoothly.

It appears in my account as purchased, this is weird.

Well, at least using the Mac server (that runs through Rosetta 2 on my M1 Mac), it works without problems to receive audio from your iOS device, if you use a direct USB-C connection between the two machines.

The MIDI part, the most important for me, it works flawlessly, via Wi-fi or USB-C cable. All the virtual ports created in your MAC via the IAC driver, and all the connected MIDI controllers will be visible and usable on iOS apps. I have all my MIDI controllers connected to my Mac. If I want to play with them on iOS, I only need to open the Studiomux app on my iPad, while the server is running in the background on my Mac. As far as I know, none other app can do this.

The current broken part in Studiomux is using this inside your Mac DAW as a FX processor, but there is a fix for this. That it's using VisualSwift. The method is to send the audio from your Mac DAW to Studiomux on iOS. Using the VisualSwift Audio Unit to route the audio to AUM. To apply the effects on AUM. And then creating a new instrument slot in Studiomux, using the IAA output port of AUM. And then sending this to a new Studiomux instrument in your Mac DAW.

Yeah, it's a tricky method. And it's sucks that the latest Studiomux beta, fixing the FX part, wasn't released to the public. This is not the first time that the developer remains radio silent on his forums for a period of months. But at least, seeing the apps coming back to the App Store, it gives me some hope.

And while the MIDI part still works, this is my most essential tool to communicate my iPad with my Mac.

  • Thanks for the detailed response
I was incorrect in the repurchase — It shows the price but I just did the purchase and it said I already purchased it so, there it is.

My issues were with round trip latency when using it as an audio funnel (fx loop?) from/to Live making it basically unusable in real time.

Also it wouldn’t pass certain midi messages through the plug-in from the MacOS side. I gave up and reverted to using an iConnectivity interface.

If these are improved I’d give it another shot as it’s far more versatile than IDAM and I posted yesterday about some other weird issues with IDAM since Big Sur came along.

With the iConnectivity audio can you also make visible the Mac MIDI ports created via IAC in your iOS device?

I always have had this doubt. It seems that the audio part works flawlessly. But I still need a reliable solution for the MIDI part.

    Unfortunately, no.

Unfortunately, no. But you can configure the iCA4+'s MIDI channels however you want on the devices.

The good news is I just tested it out and it's performing much better than it did a year ago. Latency is more than manageable.

There is still the issue that the plugin doesn't pass CC, PC or Pitchbend MIDI messages (I was using the AU plugin...maybe I should try the VST3?) but they can be tapped and directly routed to whichever host you're using on iOS and the audio can be returned via the plugin.

I recall an earlier beta version also had VST2 plugins...
