What are the best guitar apps for strumming for non-guitarists?

I must not be a very good guitar player, because when I use apps like Guitarism, or GuitarCapo+, I have a real hard time strumming. I miss strings, and the strums have a lag. It feels like all of these apps have too much space between the strings for strumming. I realize the space is therefore picking, but it is a pretty wide strum required. What are the best Guitar Apps that don't force me to swipe across my entire iPad Air like a madman?

Comments

  • Guitarism is the best for that - it will never sound really "life-like", but try different techniques, like using the nail side of a pointer finger.

If you want convincing sounding guitar chords on iOS w/o a real guitar, another option is using a virtual MIDI app like ChordPolyPad or Chordiob and linking it with a polyphonic app like bs-16i or sample player that has guitar sounds. Might not get the "kerrang!" sound of a proper strum, but could get close to authentic tone if you have the right sample.

  • @johnfromberkeley - with regards to the string spacing, turn off Smart strings in Guitarism. This puts the strings closer together. I find it switches back and forth to much for me when I'm strumming, but as you point out, the wider spacing is easier for picking individual strings. I have a half a dozen strumming guitar apps, I like Guitarism, but Guitar is my primary instrument and I use real ones when available. I don't really notice any lag, are you using it by itself or in AB with other effects?

Are you even interested in the whole strumming a guitar and performance thing or are you just interested in getting the guitar strumming sound to add to you music, as a rhythm part, to play your other ios instruments with.....? Maybe for example: Jam Maestro, Hentone, GarageBand with out the need for actually strumming might fit the bill?

I don't know that there are any guitar strumming apps for non-guitarists that will meet your needs/desires. I hope some one has better suggestions.

From my point of view, the hard part of guitar playing has been removed by not having to learn and finger the strings to form the chords and getting unwanted string buzzing or partially muted strings. You can create chord voicing's that would never be possible on a real guitar (with out constantly changing custom tunings and some really long and nimble fingers ;-)

    Just my 2 cents (+ another $1.25 ;-)

  • Here's a trick that I use that I haven't mentioned to anyone when it comes to using Guitarism for recording parts: Record your guitar phrase clean into Loopy at half tempo. Then, speed the recorded part in Loopy up to the actual desired tempo and then add effects. You can get some very fast and difficult parts down this way, and Loopy does such a good job with loop stretching that I can't notice any artifacts. :-)

So, now that you know my secret weapon, you have no excuse not to totally shred! :-)

  • Guitarism is brilliant and the other good one Pearl Guitar

  • Strum-strum is a good, simple guitar app that may be what you're looking for. It has up/down buttons for fast strums in addition to the slow 'swipe' method.

  • @johnfromberkeley Thanks for the feedback! On your iPad Air are you playing guitarism via headphones / external speaker or the built-in speaker? The iPad Air (and in general new iOS devices) have pretty high latency on the built-in speakers.

The string distance in guitarism is actually optimized for strumming not picking, when Smart Strings is disabled. If you're having trouble with it it'd be very helpful for me to see a video of you playing it, so I can think about what that means for the interface.

Also agree with @StormJH1's and @Ganthofer's suggestions. It kinda depends on whether you want to play virtual guitar, or want a guitar-sounding track that you play other instruments along with.

  • Guitarism is fun and has top notch response, second to none.

GuitarCapo+ needs a mention in this thread, useful and unique features and effects! works very well with midi controllers/sequencers and has a moveable capo.

  • Jam Maestro might be of use too. It could even help develop some guitar skills in real life as well since it lends itself nicely to experimenting with patterns.

  • Wow, what a coincidence that this thread just reappeared. As the OP, I coincidently just revisited this issue this weekend.

I have to put in a plug for ChordPolyPad.

I just purchased it because of that "strum" feature. You can actually specify an upward or downward Strum, and the duration of the strum.

Also, it's a really great app. I wish I had purchased it much sooner.

  • Hi all,

    Thank you for mentioning GuitarCapo+!

As a guitarplayer I personally find it difficult to directly transfer playing the guitar from "the real life" - compromising will always be an issue and it might be kind of "unfair" to compare :)

Even if GuitarCapo+ started out as a tool helping out with transposing chords, implementation of MIDI opens up for other ways of playing. If you like strumming as a guitar (and need alternatives), Guitarism can send MIDI to GuitarCapo+ with Quadroplay - great fun :)

Personally I also like experimenting with other apps, such as SoundPrism Pro. ChordPolyPad is also, as mentioned here, a great tool for this. An old fasion way, using a hardware MIDI keyboard also works :)

I made a little demo doing some of this this a while ago. Adding it here as an example.

    Rushs.J Guitar
This android app is good for learning the guitar strumming patterns.

  • +1 for Jam Maestro - sampled/synth "scratch tracks" I used with this app on a recent recording ended up in the final cut because it sounds that good. And I'm a guitarist who could have easily re-recorded, FWIW ;)

  • Even as a guitarist I find Guitarism quite satisfying and responsive to play when I don't have my guitar with me. Here is a track using Guitarism with pretty fast strumming (and Diode) that I recorded in a hotel room :)
