    Or music.

I feel guilty for mainly using 2 apps though: Gadget and Drambo :D

    This.
I only use Gadget, its ‘walled garden’ has been a focus and financial blessing :)

  • Some great advice here! Its also true that as a hobby there’s no really need to achieve anything (got enough of that pressure at the day job). but i do get lost sometimes and feel like i havent found the right workflow, then thinking maybe a new app will solve that (like now im thinking of loopy pro)… mostly it doesn’t . Its like im on the cusp of something great but its never quite there…

On the other side i guess devs dont mind a couple of extra sales ;) maybe ill just start by decluttering. I like the idea of starting with a basic template, pretending like i just own a handful of synths. Might treat myself to an external midi controller… oh wait here i go again :persevere:

Or, maybe just relax and realise that you don't have to create tracks at all cost. Yes, you do get that nagging feeling that you should - but perhaps that's not what you most enjoy about playing around with music apps. And that's mighty fine, too. You don't necessarily have to get results in your free-time activities. 👍

This is honestly really good advice. I enjoy making snd creating tracks but I used to get a lot of anxiety because I thought everything had to be “album ready”. Eventually I realized you can also just do stuff for fun.

My relationship with music is not what it was, more of a hobby now. And it turns out that buying and trying out really cool apps is a great hobby too, one that I practice more than actually finishing songs. Also this bloody forum… 😂 The great thing about iOS is that you get these really smart and fun apps for the price of a beer. Even if you use them just for fiddling around for a couple of hours it’s worth it. If your economic situation allows for that, obviously.

I haven’t found the “perfect” music setup on iOS. There’s always something missing. I’d say on fx I’m 300% covered but DAW and stuff, not quite there. Loopy was a great leap, though.

I doubt that having too many apps is a problem or excuse for not making music. When I want to make a song I do, doesn’t happen too often lately. When you want to make music and not fool around, you just do. If you open up Drambo and start doing lfos on wavetable phases…. That’s that, it’s great, but don’t expect to get a song done!. This is like practicing for the Olympics, try out stuff, read manuals, read this forum (a lot) and when the time comes, you do a song in 10 minutes, which is like 0,8% of the total time spent. Yesterday I sampled my banjo and was playing it shifted down with a Drambo Euclidean and random note generator… 0,01% of it ever becoming a song, who cares?

Well depending on the type of music, that sampled banjo could definitely be a song. Albeit a lm experimental one 😉

I’m also coming to terms with this. When i first started i had dreams of making (and selling) albums but quickly realised what a brutal business it is… day job is there for the challenge and money, now working to accept that music can be just a hobby and its ok to be a bit crap at it

So... I keep getting suckered in by sales. Now I have more synths, daws, and effects than I know what to do with. And then I bought Drambo. I muck about with stuff but I don't really finish anything.

This was my problem for months and the exact reason I considered getting an OP-1 Field due to its minimalistic design and many limitations. But that GAS is cured as I'd rather buy a new iPad Pro 12.9" instead.

What are your strategies for not getting distracted?

    STRATEGIES

First of all, think about what you want to achieve, whether you want to work within a certain genre, or do your own experimentation with sound. Think about which apps you want to use to achieve this. If you don't know which apps you wish to use to achieve this, start a new thread here with the question in the title.

I recently asked what apps are best to make Drone Ambient music, and I got a list of amazing apps to research. Then again, I know what workflow I'm looking for and may not buy all the recommended apps.

Another thing mate, work in a limited capacity. You can practice this by using Gadget or FLSM, both of which are "walled garden" type apps (although I think FLSM has IAA capabilities, but just ignore that feature). Or you can use a notebook and pen or the Notes app and write/type which apps you really want to use, and then stick to just using those apps.

THE WAY MY CRAZY MIND WORKS

So yeah, I lusted after the OP-1 Field. But then I realised "Wait, what do I actually want to achieve in sound? I want to sample, I want to live jam, I want to create Ambient, and I want to do so in a very limited capacity. Which app(s) do I already own that can achieve something like this?" After sifting through what I got, I was still stumped. Went to Youtube, and I saw that I could create Ambient in Koala, and I came up with this

I live jammed this, exported to Audioshare, ran the exported audio through Alteza and Reelbus in AUM, normalised that audio in Twistedwave to -3dB, and popped it onto Soundcloud.

For tomorrow's Drone Day piece, I started tinkering with the PaulXStretch iOS beta. This morning, I recorded myself smashing some eggshells from the hard boiled eggs I made and took that 8-second recording and used PXS to stretch it to 44 minutes. Then I took a recording I made of me playing "We Don't Talk About Bruno" on the piano, took a small riff from that, stretched it out to 11 minutes. I'm searching for one more sonic element on freesound.org as I type this to give the drone some high end.

The original plan was to jam this live in AUM, but I think instead I'm going to lay it all out in CB3, use effects AUv3s in a minimal way on each of the three tracks, and run all of it through VelvetMachine, a reverb that isn't Alteza for once (as I wanna switch up the flavour), and Reelbus. Then normalise that in Twistedwave to -3dB and post that to Soundcloud. And I marked all of this down in Notes so I don't deviate too far from what I want to achieve.

God, this turned into a long-winded TedTalk all of a sudden, lol. I'm hoping that any of this helps in some sort of way.

Quick question - which genre(s) are you trying to produce?

I was all on the hype train for the OP-1 Field when it was announced but the more I thought it about, the more I leaned towards “my OG OP-1 is good enough”. It’s one of the best musical/idea machines I’ve ever owned and don’t see myself ever parting with it. Now my sights are on an Elektron Analog 4 and potentially the new TE Mixer.

Reelbus is one I don’t have yet though. I think I have most other tape emulations, but for some reason haven’t gotten that one. What’s the big difference with it?

if you started on a PC or Mac DAW like fl studio or reason (me) or something else, i would say especially if you started with reason before 9 or 10 when you could add VSTs... think about how limited you were when you produced music. yet, you made awesome music i bet didnt you? you worked with what limited tools you had, and you learned the tools and all their functions like the back of your hand. you probably had templates set up for different styles or genres..

no we really are in a consumer overload of apps, and I love ALOT of them. But I eventually had to just start getting rid of stuff and stick with just a few things. I kept BM3/zenbeats for basic beatmaking, koala for quick ideas and sampling, Drambo for making cool effects and synths (and using it to side chain in zenbeats), and then I have AUM still... the multiout koala straight back into another koala project is just so good its the only thing i need, especially for those simple gritty boom bap beats.. Then I usually use cubasis for some light mastering on top.. Although im considering using Roland Zentracker, but that depends on if they hurry up and fix these v3 issues.. zenbeats was my main DAW and just as I was starting to really get the feel of it, the revamp it and lose alot of functionality. with beatmaker3 I love how you can send individual pads from a bank into seperate send tracks. thats why not being able to figure out Koala multiout in BM3 AND Zenbeats I got pretty frustrated...

for sound library i use Audioshare, sample crate, and audiocopy3, also use splice when i have an extra 10$ to get some new samples for a month (more on my sample library later)

for synths I have pure synth platinum, bassilicious2, mela 3, BLEASS Alpha, Moog Model D, House Mark I, Digitalism 2000, VHS synth and Chomplr, segments (dont really use i might delete), eg pulse (dont really use, may delete), Numa Player, Bass 808, Cyclops (wtf), Agonizer, Samplr

effects I have TB Barricade, Reelbus.. BLEASS slowmachine, delay, shimmer, saturator, and filter, beatformer, RX 950, Magic Dice and Magic Switch, FF pro q 3, flytape 2, lo-fly dirt, LUXE, Wider, beef, shaper2, beatsurfing2 ( i have no clue what this app does and cant figure it out lol), and other random ones that i dont really use and either should or should delete them.

I also have Xequence2, for bm3 and AUM its a better sequencer. Koala is a better drum machine than the cubasis ones, etc; although I cant seem to get it to work for zenbeats.. and for any other FX I use as many stock plugins as I can.

Then I have some other random little apps like video to audio converter and let's unmix (obsolete now with Koala) . So I am STILL purging. Its really hard to choose, but I want to limit it a little more, i still get taken out of a flow state wondering if I should use koala or bm3. or ill spend an hour BUTCHERING the EQ on a hi hat.. I am disappointed that its taking so long to fix up zenbeats.. I was really grooving with it, loved the key lock and multiple workflow options... now it takes an entire minute to load, wont load certain AUs or MIDI fx. automations make AUs crash, its very slow and unresponsive. sometimes seems cluttered, so i use apple pencil and its kinda glitchy. They were totally on the right track, still are. they just need beta testers. I dont even think they have any? idk..

    TL;DR
Im slowly purging all the apps i dont use or really dont need. Being limited in your toolset forces more creativity because you learn the tools you have very well and can use them to basically do anything or get creative if the daw is missing something (ex: using drambo in zenbeats to side chain). with "app overload" its kinda overwhelming, freezes productivity and creativity, and puts a false sense of "THIS is the app that will finally have me making music with a smooth workflow" until youve filled your ipad with apps you never use, you are always looking for more and different deals on apps, always checking out apps you dont have, never actually making sounds or producing music.

On the old desktop DAWs (especially reason 5.. huh? anyone?) you were very limited but creativity flowed because you could use the tools you had very well and were confident, and forced creativity through limitation.

as far as limiting yourself to force creativity:

I want to try to use what I just made up and call the 3, 4, 5, technique (lol im literally making this up but i think it might be the key): you have 3 daw like apps, 4 synths, and 5 effects. and thats it. OR you could do 4, 6, 8. This doesnt include sample library organizing apps like audioshare or sample crate, splice, audiocopy3, etc.

as far as sound library, I need to move like all but about 40Gb of very high quality sounds to an external drive. that I will plug in when needed. Then with the remaining 40Gb left on the device I need to reorganize them, I REALLY need to remove everything ive imported into BM3 because I have categorized all the samples so poorly... I wish BM3 could just drag and drop from files without having to 'import' into the app. Doesnt that just make a copy of your sample and take up more space on your drive? Also whenever I get a new sample pack or loop kit I add all the loops to blocs wave. that plus Splice's new CoSo app will always help inspire me. along with Koala sampler, which is probably just my favorite app out of everything I own.

reelbus is the best tape saturation/ cassette, vinyl emulator i have ever used. its just.... SO good. it blows others out of the water not just because it sounds better but you can edit it on a much deeper level with parameters that other emulators dont have. GET IT. if you are into the cassette tape vinyl saturation/emulation, or its important to you for your music, GET IT. if its just a fun effect you like to use sometimes im sure youre ok with what you have, even still its worth it for the quality alone

    Forcing Function

    1. Create a chord progression
    2. Create a drum loop
    3. Create a percussion loop
    4. Send chord progression to pad synth
    5. Send chord progression into an arpeggiator - send to bass synth
    6. Send chord progression into another arpeggiator - send to lead synth
    7. Create chord progressions for intro - bridge - closing parts
    8. Limit your song length to 3 minutes

In other words, force yourself to make songs. I use the workflow above. You can tinker with the arp timing of both the bass and lead parts to your liking. Add effects to lead synth to add flavor. You will find yourself using your synths and DAWS more, creating your own workflows because you will run into a flow that feels natural to you.

    I like this approach!

Which Apps do you use for the above?
Just some examples of your selection 🤗

Thank you! Right now I use:
AUM + Drambo or Atom 2 & Polybeat
    1. Scaler Beta for Chord Progressions
    2. VTines or synth for chord progressions
    3. Koala, Ting, Slammer or Ruismaker Noir for drums
    4. Skaka and Borsta for percussion
    5. Hillman, VHS or Model 12 for pads/strings
    6. Rozeta Arpeggio set to clock div 1 or 2, mutate 4 to 808 Bass or Agonizer or Minimoog or BASSalicious inside Pure Platinum for bass
    7. Rozeta Arpeggio set to clock div 3 or 4, mutate 2 to Continua or any synth for lead

Effects of choice: REAMP, Reelbus, RX950, Saturn, Volcano, ERS_DimD, OtherDesertCities
Keep warmth in check via master bus: Pro-L 2

    Truer words never spoken!

I left iOS for a few years because of my candy-store-distraction syndrome. One thing I notice is that late-night iPad use makes it worse!

I toy around with taking a break again from iOS. I simply enjoy the music-making and get more stuff done with my real instruments and the TASCAM DP24SD.

But I'll stick with iOS for now while I try out a workflow with AUM and a few apps or Zenbeats and the KeyStep Pro.

Sign up for https://weeklybeats.com/ and you won't have time to be distracted. :p

It's very effective at helping develop the habit of making songs vs just mucking about.

    ^this!

The only period of time where I completed any songs to speak of was during the four months that I participated in weeklybeats 2018. I learned more, refined workflow more, and produced more stuff that I (mostly) still can listen to without cringing or boredom during that period than I ever have.

  • Record anything. ANYTHING! Then challenge yourself to make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear. Works every time for me. . And you’ll use all those apps you have searching for just the right sound. Go as far as you can go.

Then… again, record anything… ANYTHING! and do it all again.

Awesome, added it to the top of this list. I love any and all sound degradation type apps but tape/vinyl emulations are a favorite of mine. I’ve been using ChowTape and RE-1 mostly (plus time machine for vinyl), and occasionally Tape Cassette/Tape Pro, but I’ve only ever heard good things about ReelBus. And BitJuggler is one of my favorite fx apps on iOS.

Aum to Drambo. Then to aum ( or cubasis )

  • What's interesting is that you achieve different creative results in different DAW's / apps.
    Because of workflow differences.
So having an abundance of apps is not a bad thing overall.
It's obvious that we can be only at one place at the time. Just choose the one that you feel like being at a given moment ;)

    Happy creating

WHY CANT THERE BE A PERFECT IOS DAW THAT HAS EVERYTHING ALL THESE SEPERATE APPS DO BUT DO IT TOGETHER IN ONE APP!? where is reason 11 for ios (my desktop daw, who MAJORLY dropped the ball with compact) or ableton live, or even full FL Studio (and not the IAA only mobile version....)?
bm3 and zenbeats are the closest I have seen yet, but still not all there yet,.,.
i use cubasis to record vocals, and do some mastering... but yeah. need to learn more about drambo and how to use it for side chaining in other DAWs and stuff...

I agree, it can get frustrating.
But IMO to have a DAW that “has everything” is harder and wouldn’t be as optimal as to open up the possibilities to use specialized apps in seamless manner, which is where AUM excels.
You mention Zenbeats, which for me is also the closest. If only they opened up midi routing and made it more flexible…

Exactly. But you need some nice “hub”, AUM is amazing at this. But it’s not easy to get from AUM to a finished song if you’re doing audio, midi, etc… Zenbeats or a daw provides that linear timeline and clips to make arranging and song writing more straightforward and accesible. But there’s always shortcomings and stuff missing.

Then using song mode in Drambo to build. From there I send all the AUM instruments into a bus with FF Limiter. AUM + Drambo = Awesome!

    I went from this.

A Drambo ipad. With Aum ipad input.

    To 2 x Drambo

  • I can map synths to controller and keep synths in project. So I dont have to keep mapping. I cant map spacefields. Mononoke. Or apps like thermo/fundamental. I can send via aum but probably wont use spacefields until I can map via controller.

  • I used to get frustrated getting GAS all the time. Happily whiling away time watching synth vids etc on ytube daydreaming about what could be.

Then I realised, it only rears its head when I haven't fired up my DAW for more than a few days. Just fire up SunVox, problem solved.

To avoid option paralysis I exclusively write and mixdown in SunVox.

Then master in Audio Evolution Mobile. This is streamlined by having a master chain template: TB EQ4 (corrective EQ) > ReelBus (saturation) > Barricade (limiting).

I go by the adage that a new technique is more valuable than new gear. And that mastery over fundamental techniques trumps new techniques.

All of this frees me up to just dig as deep as I can into these two apps.

Sure, I am missing out, but on balance it works best for me this way.

Sometimes I play aimlessly and embrace it. Just making sound for the joy of it.

Other times I focus. Setting parameters helps. Sometimes specific (set bpm, instruments, samples, etc), sometimes an abstract theme (often working with an emotion).

Focus hasn't come quickly, it's been cultivated by regular practice over the last two or three years.

Exactly like that. Its a pain to get to that focusstadium. You hade to have your 10 000 hours of practice before you even get close to ”not dig deeper in apps” and unfocus.

I tried to use Drambo for sequencing in AUM before the new drambo update which includes piano roll.. I didnt like it for the very reason that there wasnt a piano roll and as im not the greatest at playing piano i had to constantly re-record.

I also tried LK and AUM. ehhhh, idk the interface or something it just wasnt intuitive enough for me. Xequence2 + AUM is really fun, except there is no Audio tracks with xequence2. but I was thinking, If i just put my audio clips into Koala and map the Koala pads midi to xequence, why couldnt i just do that? its because koala plays a sequence it doesnt seem like you can just run a midi pattern through the pads alone while the ableton link save/sync is connected cus when you press play it will play a sequence. unless the sequence was empty? then you would have to just record the koala pads playing through midi as an audio track then were back to the begining lol...

So far the funnest for me is Koala multi out into 8 different AUM channels usually for adding FX to the kick, snare, cymbols/hats/sometimes percussion, FX, or other loops/samples i may be using....
plus whatever else I want as a channel in AUM (BLEASS Alpha, Numa Player, Mela 3, VHS synth, Chomplr, Model D, Mynth are all favorites) and then sending them all to a bus channel with a new koala project in the first effect slot, and recording it all back into another koala project (I bet you could get it to record your xequence midi tracks as audio samples.. ) and then arrange the song with koalas sequence loops. Automation would have to be done live.

I often start an idea in koala and then painstakingly transer the stems and samples to beatmaker3 (by recording them through internal aux, i HATE bm3s sample browser It basically forces you to take up that much more storage space by making a copy and keeping one in bm3 library and the other in audioshare or files app...)

I REALLY need to learn Drambo. Like i mess with it, but I want to actually utilize this beast of a tool otherwise its just wasting my time making me play with waveform oscillators because its all i really know how to do.. I feel like I am wasting such a huge opprotunity to create template tracks, racks, and projects that ready to go for quickly making hip hop, trap, dubstep, riddim, future bass, etc. I have a really hard time understanding the multi out like with koala and aum its so easy, with drambo and using multi out koala i literally cannot figure it out...

I also tried LK and AUM. ehhhh, idk the interface or something it just wasnt intuitive enough for me. I suppose Loopy Pro would do the trick too.. Im on the beta for that and really need to play with it more,.. i just cant get over the whole "no midi" or piano roll.. ive never been much of a pure loop workflow type of guy.. need a linear timeline with patterns and audio tracks...

Have you tried NanoStudio for MIDI?

I like to look at my iPad as a modular system with all the apps and plugins as modules. It allows you to create your own workflows.

I’ve been enjoying the combo of Drambo in AUM. I’m using Drambo as a MIDI FX (8 outs already set), recording parts into clips. I prefer the MIDI routing in AUM. Then using song mode in Drambo to build. From there I send all the AUM instruments into a bus with FF Limiter. AUM + Drambo = Awesome!

This setup sounds perfect except if you also need to include audio. I’ve tried plenty using Drambo Flexi for “song parts” and it’s just not working well, too many loop holes. If/when loopy gets multi outputs it would be a complete setup. AUM hosting Drambo, using Drambo as a song builder and master sequencer. You’d then launch loopy clips from Drambo.
