Does Focusrite 4i4 3rg gen work with iPads with lightning connector? (Yes it does)

edited June 2022 in General App Discussion

I stupidly grabbed the wrong power cable to plug on my usb hub and fried it and my mouse and my Steinberg UR22 mkii. I guess things could be worse, I could have fried my laptop USB port, qwerty keyboard, monitors and Hammond SK1.

I need a interface now but I have a little dilemma. My iPad is a pro 2017 with lightning. It will get replaced but probably not this year. And my windows laptop who does not have USB type C will get replaced in the fall. I am not decided with a windows or a Mac yet.

What audio interface would future proof me while still working with my current iPad and laptop?

Comments

  • I forgot to say. I use my interface to record vocal and direct guitar.(not at the same time) Also to plug my monitors.

  • Maybe audio 4c or 4+

If an ipad pro fails. You can just buy half an ipad pro. With standard/air ipads.

    More tracks with Drambo.

    More screens for IAA etc.

I bought beatsurfer. I can route audio.

Negatives. With x 2 ipad system. You think you cant just chill on sofa with half a project but with beatsurfer. Seems you can still make synth patches etc as you arnt dealing with pristine midi drums.

Thank you for the advice but these are super expensive in Canada.

  • Would any class compliment interface with usb A work with a CCK work with my lightning ipad and with modern iPad with usb C?

Yes or simply one of these (a lot more functional than a CCK kit):

  • If you liked your Steinberg, the UR C line would work. I have the UR44C. Its port is USB-C but it comes with a USB C to USB A cable.

  • The Steinbergs are pretty good.

The TC Blender looks to be pretty nifty for not a lot of $.

It worked fine but it was really annoying when recording guitars with palm muting it would peak with the level at its lowest level. But I will consider it for the USB C to A cable.

My iPad as a lightning connector. How would this work ?

  • I have a Motu M4 which I switch between my Macbook air M1 and iPad Air 3 (via CCK - lightning). The M4 has a USB-C in and requires a powered USB hub to work with the iPad. The hub makes a seamless conversion from C to B. I can’t tell for sure if it can be powered straight from the USB-C iPad but in most cases you’ll be using the hub to connect other devices.

  • Oops ! Sorry missed the part that your connector was lightning

You may need to power the Lightning CCK with some interfaces.

For the Pro, I think the answer is going to be yes. I don't know about the new Air with USB-C though.

My M1 iPad Pro can power the MOTU M4 and the Behringer 204HD with the right cables. The MOTU uses a USB-C to USB-C and the 204HD needs a USB-C to USB-B cable. My first gen Pro needed a powered hub. With the M1 Pro you can use the Apple HDMI/USB-A/USB-C Power dongle to power the iPad and run the interface if you need more playing time. But, a full charge on the iPad gets me a pretty long session without being plugged in.

What kind of pickups do you have in your guitar? Actives or some of the more powerful ceramics can put out quite a bit of voltage. An interface with good pads on the input could be useful in that case. There was an interface with a compressor onboard announced not long ago too. Personally, I've gone to always using a preamp on my guitar before the interface. The tube preamp gives a nice response and allows me to much more easily dial in levels for playing into the iPad.

  • I am quite happy with my Zoom U-24 both with guitar inputs and my phantom-power needing condenser.

My pickup are passive and medium output compare to those powerful ceramics. But it is 7 strings. I think this might be the reason.

I’ve purchased a couple of audio interfaces used in the past couple of years - at well below retail. IIRC the Steinberg UR22C may have a power input which would avoid the need for a hub? One of these didn’t become either of my choices but I saw ten available on UK eBay.

FYI #1 was an Audient Evo 4, used with an ESI M4UeX MIDI interface which has an integrated hub (so no need for MIDI on the audio interface. #2 is a Presonus Studio 26C in this case I wanted MIDI and a 2nd pair of line outputs to enable use of hardware effects. (Edit: Connected via a powered USB3 hub, where I also connect my EWI USB controller, Intellijel uMIDI module, and power to USB3 CCK)

Could anybody confirm if Focusrite 4i4 3rd gen work with a iPad Pro 2017 with lightning connector + camera kit usb / Lightning power?

  • Not sure about how lightning would work with Focusrite, but I have both a 4i4 and a Steinberg UR2C. Bought the Focusrite as I wanted another stereo input for a synth. I mainly use these interfaces with a Mac, but have used the Steinberg with my iPad.
I am pretty sure the Steinberg would have no insurmountable problem with Lightning, and I prefer it’s physical input switches vs the software driven inputs of the Focusrite.
Also, for guitar, the Steinberg has built in Yamaha DSP effects - while still allowing a dry signal to your DAW or App. They also give you all DSP FX as plug-ins. I find this works well, and also like the DSP for latency-free vocal FX.
I am waiting on a new synth which does audio over USB and will then sell the Focusrite and keep the UR2C.

  • If anybody as a answer it would be appreciated

I bought a Focusrite 4i4 3rd gen and it works great. Only downside is that many features are contrôlable only by the software that is not available for iOS.

I would not recommend if you are iPad exclusive.
