MultitrackStudio and Mitosynth
Hey everyone... I've been using Mitosynth for a very long time and it's become very much a part of my creative process. Unfortunately Wooji Juice has no plans to update it to AUv3, at least as of the last time I communicated with Canis. Hopefully he'll do some sort of update to at least keep Apple from striking it from the App store... Unfortunately I've been running into issues between Mitosynth and Cubasis 2 (intermittent operation) and 3 (doesn't show in the list at all) and Auria Pro doesn't show it either. In AUM I can run it into Multitrack DAW and drive Mitosynth with Xequence, etc. and it works a little more reliably, but it's a bit cumbersome, to say the least. Audiobus 3 works ok, stable, but has a little more detours to the work flow...
I had forgotten about MultitrackStudio until seeing it mentioned here I believe and thought I would check into it. It seems back in 2014-15 some people were having issues with MTS and Mitosynth but I haven't been able to find any reference to the two in recent years. Is anyone currently using the two together or are they still not working with each other? I spoke to Giel at Bremmers Audio and he said he didn't have Mitosynth so he couldn't give me an answer and to check at the MTS forum. I figured before signing up for yet another forum I would check here first...
If MTS was only $5-$10 I would just buy it and if it worked great, if not, oh well. but by the time you get the whole deal you're up to ~$50 or so - a little more then I would like to spend on a test. I could get a refund I suppose - I just hate putting them though the motions if I can get an answer before hand.
Currently using a 2nd Gen 12.9" iPad Pro with iPAD OS 15.3.1
Thanks for your insight...
Dave

Hi Dave, I do have both of these bits of software and have not used them in a project together but did a little test for you.
First, I added two MIDI tracks and an audio track. Mitosynth was loaded as an IAA into MIDI track 1.
The second MIDI track I assigned as a “Virtual MIDI App”, pointing at Mitosynth - this is where the MIDI data goes. I changed the MIDI channel that this track is pointing to to channel 10, which is what Mitosynth is listening on.
The first track is put into “practice mode” which means that I can hear what is coming out of the IAA that is loaded as it receives MIDI from track two. If I now add notes or play the keyboard on track two then I hear the output of Mitosynth on that track.
The third track (audio) is set to record the “practice mode” track (track 1) and I hit play. The output of Mitosynth is now recorded to the audio track, live.
There is no possibility for bouncing audio with this setup.
I have a feeling that MTS sends some extra MIDI cc’s when it starts playing MIDI (brightness etc) which I have had to filter out in the past since they can alter the sound of an IAA. I would therefore say that although what is recorded does sound like the patch that I selected, it may not in all circumstances. If you have a snippet of MIDI that you would like me to render with a specific patch then I’m happy to do this as you will know what it is meant to sound like and will be able to detect any nuances, drop me a PM.
It also seems to work fine in Cubasis 3 but you need to add an Audio track and then choose IAA as input to that track. Mitosynth then appears in the list for selection. If you already have CB3 then may be worth trying this route first.
Thanks for your tests - I really appreciate it!. For whatever reason Cubasis 3 did not show Mitosynth as an IAA plugin. So I deleted Cubasis, rebooted, reinstalled and rebooted. It finally showed Mitosynth and I got it running on a track however it was really choppy. Checking the Cubasis preferences for Audio I tweaked a few things and it cleared up a bit. Tomorrow (today lol?) I’ll try working it again and see if it’s as buggy as it was on Cubasis 2. The big issue was that Mito is randomly disconnected from the DAW requiring it to be loaded again. Sometimes this can happen quickly and other times it takes several minutes. Don’t know which app is causing it…my initial instinct is telling me that Mito needs a little TLC but with the issues people have claimed with Cubasis I can’t rule it out 100%
I’ll let you know what I find. If you could just run Mito in MTS with a couple other synth tracks for a couple of minutes and let me know if it hangs in there? That would be great!

Mitosynth user and lover here too. I froze my iPad on iOS13 after a number of reports of it losing functionality in CB2&3 when iOS14 dropped.
I’ve also written to Canis a few times but it seems the Dev can no longer allocate time and resources on keeping Mito fully functional on the constant OS updates, and Mito’s coding is far too old to be able to update to AUv3.
Mito is the reason I’m staying on iOS13 now. Working fine in CB2 and AUM. Sorry I couldn’t help.
An i correct in remembering, i acquired an early @Spidericemidas bank masterpiece for Mitosynth?
@des Check the Analytics logs to see if Mitosynth is crashing when it randomly disconnects.
You could also look for a jetsam log at the same time as the failure, in case it's being killed to recover memory. It seems dumb, but iOS will kill an app to gain memory for another, and it doesn't understand how things are interconnected. If you find a jetsam, search it for "reason (note the quote) to see which apps were affected.
If you have an older device around with Mito still on it, connect it to the newer Pro through an audio interface. You can connect it to any DAW this way.
Also, if Mito has self-recording (the performance recorder?), you could record the audio in-app and just load the audio track into your DAW (I hope it has Files access or Sharing, not just iTunes).
You have helped a LOT! I find your patches - for Mitosynth as well as other synths very inspiring! I just hope Canis does something to at least keep it alive in the App store...
I've been looking at the Activity logs and the dates I' seeing for Mitosynth are not aligning with the recent errors. There were some Auria entries that I was not able to decode though...(i.e. understand...) I did get Mitosynth to show in both Cubasis 3 and Auria Pro by uninstalling both then reinstalling. Still running into sporadic behavior. I didn't see any analytic entries for Cubasis. Any idea how to clear out the list so I can keep a fresh track of recent issues?
I have an iPad2, 4 and a Gen 1 Pro (that my wife uses now). I use the iPad 2 in my shop as a Pandora player - and I have copies of some good old programs like Alchemy, etc. My iPad 4 is by my modular. It has some goodies on it to - Alchemy, Mitosynth, Grainscience and a neat sequencer that went the way of the dodo - Spectre. I don't know why the dev didn't take it further. It was rather unique among the sequencers on the App store. Guess he got bored with it. Another oldie is SynthTronica. It kind of sucks that on the iPad 4 Cubasis 2 and Mitosynth work great together, but not on the Gen 2 Pro...
Mitosynth can record it's output or I could do it through AUM, Audiobus, but that isn't the sort of workflow I prefer. I Usually will find a patch, work a midi part to work with it. Add another track or two doing the same. And quite often I will go back and change notes or remove certain ones entirely. When I'm happy with a particular instrument track I'll print it and move on to another track.
You may have seen some logs with "resource" in the name, like cpu_resource. You can ignore them.
You cannot clean out the list. Entries are deleted after about 2 weeks, and they all include the date and time in their filenames.
I asked him politely for Mitosynth2 😁
I’ve seen those. I’ve also got ‘Analytic 90Day’ that go back to 2022-2-26. I think they may clear when an OS update is done. Might have to update to the latest to know for certain….
Heh…I’ve asked him several times too. I would gladly pay for a version 2! He’s been working on his audio editors lately. Not something I’m interested in at the moment, but that may change in the future. At least he’s still got some irons in the fire.
If the dev for Mitosynth happens to read this thread... I'd like to say that I'd gladly buy Mitosynth again at full price if he rewrote it as an AUv3.
