Tempo Sync iPad to Mac Logic

More specifically using Logic to play the backing track session and running the vocals through the iPad to split the CPU usage between 2 devices. Have the Logic bpm synced to the iPad for vocal delays
Is this a thing?

  • Let me see if I understand. You want to:

    • Send vocals from a mic to the iPad.
    • Process the vocals through FX in some host on the iPad
    • Sync that host to Logic on the Mac
    • (Send the processed vocals from the iPad to Logic on the Mac?)

    If that's correct then:

    • What (if any) audio interface are you using to get the mic vocals in to the iPad?
    • What host do you want to use for the vocal FX?
  • well mostly , I want to send to iPad vocals to the PA system. Pretty much substituting rack gear for vocals with the iPad and syncing the 2 machines together for tempo purposes.
I have a IK Irog duo for the iPad and my mixer has interface function as well.
I kinda just answered the question with routing the midi out from the Mac to the iPad, but my first thought was to do it wirelessly

You could use Bluetooth midi, but I wouldn’t especially recommend it for midi clock, which is high traffic and needs exceptional stability. You say put to a PA? So this would be for live use? If so, that’s another reason to avoid wireless if possible.

Forget about WiFi for this. It’ll never be stable enough.

You didn’t mention if you’ll be hosting the vocal FX in a host. That can be a complication if that host (such as AUM) doesn’t slave to midi clock. Not insurmountable, but needs to be dealt with.

  • If you’re only using Logic for playing a backing track, you might switch to Ableton, and use Ableton Link for sync.

Works over Wi-Fi, is solid for me, and you can get a copy of Live Lite for €0 if you have Koala or another app that included a license.

    I keep forgetting about that.
